A Reason to Fight

Arthur took a slow, heavy step into the library, and the air thickened with tension.

"Put it back," he said. His voice was flat, edged with chilling authority.

Evelyn's hand trembled, but she returned the leather journal to the drawer and turned the key in the lock.

"Arthur, we need to talk about what your grandfather wrote. If your position on the board is that fragile..."

"We don't need to do anything, Evelyn, except follow the terms of the contract you signed." He cut her off cleanly. "You violated the single boundary I set in this house. Do not mistake my financial backing for an invitation into my life. Go to your room. We're done here."

Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat, then lifted her chin in defiance.

"I'm your wife for the next two years, Arthur, not your employee. You can't just order me around in your own apartment."

"I can," Arthur replied.

He opened his laptop and shut her out completely.

The three days that followed were defined by a brutal, freezing silence. They barely crossed paths, and when they did, neither made an effort to speak. Evelyn hated how easily he could make her feel like a stranger in the very home she was supposed to share with him.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, the private elevator chimed.

A woman stepped out, bringing with her a sharp cloud of Chanel No. 5. Eleanor Sterling, Arthur's mother, had the same sharp grey eyes as her son, and they landed on Evelyn at once.

"So you're the girl my son traded his freedom for." She took her time with each word. "Arthur told me the wedding was strategically necessary. He neglected to mention that he'd married a woman who would let him live like a ghost."

Evelyn opened her mouth, but Eleanor was already moving through the foyer.

"I've cancelled my dinner plans. The three of us are having a proper family meal tonight. I want to see this intense connection your publicists keep writing about."

Arthur emerged from the library corridor, his expression blank. Eleanor studied them both with a critical eye.

"If I can see right through this sudden marriage, the Sterling Holdings board will dismantle you both by the gala."

Evelyn stepped forward before Arthur could object. She slid her hand through the crook of his elbow, feeling the muscles in his arm go rigid. She pressed closer anyway.

"That sounds wonderful, Eleanor. Arthur and I were just saying how much we wanted to catch up."

Arthur looked down at her, his grey eyes flashing with irritation. Then, slowly, he relaxed and drew her hand firmly against his side.

"Yes," he lied, his voice dropping to a low baritone. "Mrs. Gable is already preparing the dining room."

Dinner turned into a tactical interrogation.

Eleanor sat at the head of the table like a queen presiding over a court-martial.

"I reviewed the latest balance sheets for Vance Textiles," she said, slicing her duck with elegant precision. "It's a thoroughly outdated operation. No wonder it collapsed."

She turned to her son.

"Arthur, this feels less like a corporate merger and more like an enormously expensive act of public charity. The Vance name is the only asset she brought."

Evelyn's grip tightened around her water glass. A flush of angry heat crept up her neck. She had spent her entire life watching her family build that company, and hearing it dismissed so casually stung more than she wanted to admit.

But before she could speak, a deep voice cut through the room.

"That's enough, Mother."

Arthur set down his wine glass with a sharp clink. His grey eyes burned with dangerous intensity.

"You're stating your own bias. Vance Textiles holds exclusive heritage design patents and a fiercely loyal domestic supply chain, one Sterling Holdings has tried to break into for five years. Evelyn didn't come to me begging. She negotiated a lifeline for her people while handing me the exact leverage I needed."

He paused.

"She is the smartest acquisition this company has made in decades."

Evelyn stared at him, her heart doing a sudden, violent flip. She hadn't expected him to defend her, especially not against his

The heavy iron doors of the Montgomery manor clicked shut behind them, cutting off Richard's furious shouting and Victoria's shrill protests. The storm had not let up, but as Arthur and Evelyn descended the grand stone steps, the downpour no longer felt like a threat. It felt like a cleansing. Arthur kept his arm around Evelyn's waist, pulling her against his side to shield her from the wind as they reached the waiting Maybach. The driver held the door open, his eyes wide with awe and relief at seeing them emerge unharmed. They slid into the leather interior, and the door sealed with a quiet thud that locked out the rest of the world. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The adrenaline that had carried them through the confrontation began to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion and something else: a raw, uncharted vulnerability. Arthur turned to look at her. His wet hair clung to his forehead, and his tuxedo shirt was soaked through, but his eyes were completely clea

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   Beyond the Contract.

The rain fell in sheets as the Maybach tore down the slick highway towards the sprawling Montgomery estate in upstate New York. Inside the cabin, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the aggressive slap of the windshield wipers. Arthur sat perfectly rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles jumped. The cold, calculating billionaire was gone. In his place sat a man running on pure desperation. He checked his watch: 1:14 a.m. The SEC offices would open in less than eight hours. If Victoria leaked that document, Sterling Holdings could be thrown into chaos, and the Vance mills would be crushed in the fallout. Beside him, Evelyn stared straight ahead, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The emerald silk of her gown seemed to mock the ruin closing in on them. "Arthur," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If we can't get it back..." "We will." His voice dropped to a dangerous rasp. He reached across the console and gripped her hand, his palm warm against her ice-cold

Before a single word could be exchanged, Arthur reached for her. His large hand slid firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his side with a possessive intensity that made a few nearby socialites gasp. "Everything all right?" he murmured, his voice low and rough, meant only for her. "Victoria tried to write our script for us," Evelyn whispered, looking up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I think it's time we showed her who the directors are." A dark, prideful fire kindled in Arthur's grey eyes. "With pleasure." Right there, in the centre of the Waldorf ballroom, beneath the watchful gaze of the Sterling board and a stunned Victoria Montgomery, Arthur leaned down. It was no polite, corporate kiss. His hand tightened at her waist, anchoring her to him, while the other rose to cup the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline. He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, deeply intense, unmistakably public kiss. It was a display of passion that shatt

The wall of camera flashes detonated the moment Arthur's shoes hit the pavement. He turned, ignoring the shouting reporters, and held out his hand to guide Evelyn from the car. As she stepped into the crisp autumn air, the emerald silk of her gown caught the glare of the flashbulbs, making her look radiant against the dark New York night. Arthur slid an arm around her waist and drew her flush against his side. Evelyn didn't stiffen. She leaned into his warmth, her hand resting naturally against his lapel as they climbed the velvet-roped carpet. The transition from penthouse rehearsal to the real world was seamless. "Mr. Sterling! Is it true it was a whirlwind romance?" a reporter shouted over the barricade. "Mrs. Sterling, look over here!" another called. Arthur gave the press a controlled, perfectly practised smile, but his eyes remained sharp and watchful as he guided her through the heavy glass doors of the Waldorf Astoria, leaving the roar of the paparazzi behind. Inside, th

"We have a problem," Evelyn said the following evening as Arthur walked out of the library corridor. The Waldorf Astoria gala was tomorrow night. "Us," she continued. "We can talk the talk, Arthur, but tomorrow there will be hundreds of cameras. If our body language looks stiff, the contract narrative wins. We need to rehearse the choreography until it looks like second nature." Arthur crossed the marble floor slowly and stopped exactly three feet away. "Fine. We'll start with basic navigation. When I guide you through a crowd..." He stepped into her space, and the clean scent of cedarwood enveloped her. Slowly, he reached out and placed his palm against the small of her back. Evelyn winced at the unexpected warmth of his hand. "Too stiff," Arthur observed, his voice dropping to a low murmur. He slid his hand lower, anchoring it against her hip, and drew her a full step closer until the tips of her shoes brushed against his. "Lean into my weight. Let your shoulder rest agains
