The Hidden Clause

The dining room was vast and uninviting, dominated by a twelve-foot table carved from a single slab of black quartz. Evelyn sat at one end and Arthur at the other. The distance between them made the evening feel less like dinner and more like a summit between rival nations.

Silverware chimed against porcelain. Neither of them spoke.

"The silent treatment won't work in public, Arthur." Evelyn's voice cut through the heavy silence. "If we're going to fool the press, we need to learn how to actually talk to each other."

Arthur set down his knife. "In public, the narrative does most of the work. We smile, stand close, and let them fill in the blanks. My mother has scheduled a charity gala for next Friday. That will be our public debut."

A knot tightened in Evelyn's stomach. "A gala? We don't know the first thing about each other."

Arthur swept his fingers across his tablet. A soft chime sounded from Evelyn's phone.

"I've just emailed you a dossier."

She opened the file. It was neatly formatted, containing his public profile, his alma mater, his interests, and a fabricated account of how they had met at an art gallery exhibition six months ago.

"You've memorized my background?" she asked.

"Naturally." He didn't look up. "You spend your weekends at the upstate mills, and you lift your chin when you're being defensive. Much like you're doing right now."

He finally met her eyes.

"Memorize the timeline, Evelyn. If a reporter asks about our first kiss, the answer is three weeks after the exhibition, outside the library, on a rainy Tuesday."

"How romantic," Evelyn said dryly.

"Romance is an emotion. This is choreography." Arthur rose from his chair. "Review the dossier tonight, and make sure you look rested."

By two o'clock the next afternoon, the penthouse was empty.

The lawyers had come and gone, leaving behind a mountain of signed paperwork and a digital receipt confirming a multimillion-dollar wire transfer. Her father's heritage mills were officially safe.

Restless, Evelyn began to explore the penthouse. She passed the living room and stopped before a pair of frosted glass doors. Pushing them open, she stepped into the library.

Unlike the rest of the penthouse, this room had a soul. Heavy, leather-bound volumes crowded the shelves, and the air smelled faintly of old paper and cedar.

At the far end stood a grand mahogany desk, immaculately organized. But a small, ornate silver key lay beside the keyboard, looking entirely out of place. Her gaze drifted to the bottom-right drawer, where a vintage brass keyhole waited.

We respect each other's privacy, Arthur had said.

Curiosity flared anyway. Before she could talk herself out of it, she picked up the key and slid it into the lock. It turned with a heavy click.

Inside lay a thick leather journal. The inscription on the cover read Edward Sterling, Arthur's grandfather.

Evelyn hesitated before opening it. She knew she shouldn't be reading something so personal, but curiosity got the better of her.

She turned the yellowed pages until one date, five years old, caught her eye.

Arthur thinks I am blind to the board's maneuvering. They believe he is too cold, too ruthless, to rule a legacy company. If I leave the chairmanship to him outright, the board will oust him within a year. I must force his hand.

The inheritance clause will require a marriage to someone with a heritage name, rooted in community and loyalty. Someone who can teach him what a balance sheet cannot. If he cannot find a partner to anchor him, he will destroy himself.

Evelyn's breath hitched.

Arthur hadn't married simply to satisfy some arbitrary clause. His position as chairman was far more fragile than he had ever let on. He was desperate, too.

"I believed we had agreed to respect each other's privacy, Evelyn."

The deep, dangerously calm voice shattered the silence.

She spun around, her fingers tightening around the journal as the colour drained from her face.

Arthur stood in the doorway, his grey eyes fixed on her with a dark, furious intensity.

The heavy iron doors of the Montgomery manor clicked shut behind them, cutting off Richard's furious shouting and Victoria's shrill protests. The storm had not let up, but as Arthur and Evelyn descended the grand stone steps, the downpour no longer felt like a threat. It felt like a cleansing. Arthur kept his arm around Evelyn's waist, pulling her against his side to shield her from the wind as they reached the waiting Maybach. The driver held the door open, his eyes wide with awe and relief at seeing them emerge unharmed. They slid into the leather interior, and the door sealed with a quiet thud that locked out the rest of the world. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The adrenaline that had carried them through the confrontation began to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion and something else: a raw, uncharted vulnerability. Arthur turned to look at her. His wet hair clung to his forehead, and his tuxedo shirt was soaked through, but his eyes were completely clea

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   Beyond the Contract.

The rain fell in sheets as the Maybach tore down the slick highway towards the sprawling Montgomery estate in upstate New York. Inside the cabin, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the aggressive slap of the windshield wipers. Arthur sat perfectly rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles jumped. The cold, calculating billionaire was gone. In his place sat a man running on pure desperation. He checked his watch: 1:14 a.m. The SEC offices would open in less than eight hours. If Victoria leaked that document, Sterling Holdings could be thrown into chaos, and the Vance mills would be crushed in the fallout. Beside him, Evelyn stared straight ahead, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The emerald silk of her gown seemed to mock the ruin closing in on them. "Arthur," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If we can't get it back..." "We will." His voice dropped to a dangerous rasp. He reached across the console and gripped her hand, his palm warm against her ice-cold

Before a single word could be exchanged, Arthur reached for her. His large hand slid firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his side with a possessive intensity that made a few nearby socialites gasp. "Everything all right?" he murmured, his voice low and rough, meant only for her. "Victoria tried to write our script for us," Evelyn whispered, looking up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I think it's time we showed her who the directors are." A dark, prideful fire kindled in Arthur's grey eyes. "With pleasure." Right there, in the centre of the Waldorf ballroom, beneath the watchful gaze of the Sterling board and a stunned Victoria Montgomery, Arthur leaned down. It was no polite, corporate kiss. His hand tightened at her waist, anchoring her to him, while the other rose to cup the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline. He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, deeply intense, unmistakably public kiss. It was a display of passion that shatt

The wall of camera flashes detonated the moment Arthur's shoes hit the pavement. He turned, ignoring the shouting reporters, and held out his hand to guide Evelyn from the car. As she stepped into the crisp autumn air, the emerald silk of her gown caught the glare of the flashbulbs, making her look radiant against the dark New York night. Arthur slid an arm around her waist and drew her flush against his side. Evelyn didn't stiffen. She leaned into his warmth, her hand resting naturally against his lapel as they climbed the velvet-roped carpet. The transition from penthouse rehearsal to the real world was seamless. "Mr. Sterling! Is it true it was a whirlwind romance?" a reporter shouted over the barricade. "Mrs. Sterling, look over here!" another called. Arthur gave the press a controlled, perfectly practised smile, but his eyes remained sharp and watchful as he guided her through the heavy glass doors of the Waldorf Astoria, leaving the roar of the paparazzi behind. Inside, th

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   The Night Before the Gala

"We have a problem," Evelyn said the following evening as Arthur walked out of the library corridor. The Waldorf Astoria gala was tomorrow night. "Us," she continued. "We can talk the talk, Arthur, but tomorrow there will be hundreds of cameras. If our body language looks stiff, the contract narrative wins. We need to rehearse the choreography until it looks like second nature." Arthur crossed the marble floor slowly and stopped exactly three feet away. "Fine. We'll start with basic navigation. When I guide you through a crowd..." He stepped into her space, and the clean scent of cedarwood enveloped her. Slowly, he reached out and placed his palm against the small of her back. Evelyn winced at the unexpected warmth of his hand. "Too stiff," Arthur observed, his voice dropping to a low murmur. He slid his hand lower, anchoring it against her hip, and drew her a full step closer until the tips of her shoes brushed against his. "Lean into my weight. Let your shoulder rest agains

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   A Reason to Fight

Arthur took a slow, heavy step into the library, and the air thickened with tension. "Put it back," he said. His voice was flat, edged with chilling authority. Evelyn's hand trembled, but she returned the leather journal to the drawer and turned the key in the lock. "Arthur, we need to talk about what your grandfather wrote. If your position on the board is that fragile..." "We don't need to do anything, Evelyn, except follow the terms of the contract you signed." He cut her off cleanly. "You violated the single boundary I set in this house. Do not mistake my financial backing for an invitation into my life. Go to your room. We're done here." Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat, then lifted her chin in defiance. "I'm your wife for the next two years, Arthur, not your employee. You can't just order me around in your own apartment." "I can," Arthur replied. He opened his laptop and shut her out completely. The three days that followed were defined by a brutal, free
