Beyond the Contract.

The rain fell in sheets as the Maybach tore down the slick highway towards the sprawling Montgomery estate in upstate New York. Inside the cabin, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the aggressive slap of the windshield wipers.

Arthur sat perfectly rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles jumped. The cold, calculating billionaire was gone. In his place sat a man running on pure desperation. He checked his watch: 1:14 a.m. The SEC offices would open in less than eight hours. If Victoria leaked that document, Sterling Holdings could be thrown into chaos, and the Vance mills would be crushed in the fallout.

Beside him, Evelyn stared straight ahead, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The emerald silk of her gown seemed to mock the ruin closing in on them.

"Arthur," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If we can't get it back..."

"We will." His voice dropped to a dangerous rasp. He reached across the console and gripped her hand, his palm warm against her ice-cold fingers. "I built this empire, Evelyn. I will burn it to the ground myself before I let them use it to destroy you."

When the car slammed to a halt before the Montgomery manor, Arthur didn't wait for the driver. He surged out into the downpour, ignoring the rain soaking through his bespoke tuxedo jacket. He rounded the car, helped Evelyn out, and shielded her with his own body as they marched up the grand stone steps.

He didn't knock. He drove his shoulder into the heavy oak doors and forced them open, startling a pajama-clad butler.

"Where is he?" Arthur's voice roared through the vaulted foyer.

"Arthur, do calm down."

The voice, smooth and arrogant, drifted from the top of the grand staircase. Richard Montgomery descended slowly in a silk smoking jacket, a glass of scotch in his hand. Victoria stood just behind him, a smug, triumphant smile fixed on her face.

"It's a bit late for a social call, don't you think?" Richard stepped onto the marble floor. "Though I suppose when your entire life is about to implode, sleep is hard to come by."

"Where is the document, Richard?" Arthur advanced, his posture predatory. The sheer menace rolling off him made the older man instinctively retreat half a step. "Name your price. Stocks, real estate, the European transit holdings. Take it all. Give me the contract."

Richard chuckled and swirled his scotch. "You think this is about money, boy? Your grandfather humiliated my family for forty years. This is about eradication. Tomorrow morning, the SEC receives proof that your marriage is a fraudulent sham designed to manipulate stock prices. You're finished."

Behind Arthur, Evelyn stepped forward. Her trembling had stopped. The fierce, unyielding defiance he had admired from the very beginning burned in her eyes.

"You're forgetting one thing, Mr. Montgomery," she said, her voice ringing clearly through the hall.

Victoria laughed from the stairs. "And what's that, darling? Your pathetic textile mills?"

"No." Evelyn locked eyes with her. "You're forgetting that a contract is only fraudulent if the intent behind it is a sham. Look at him. Look at me."

She reached out and laced her fingers tightly through Arthur's.

"Go ahead and send it to the SEC. We'll stand before the board, the federal investigators, and the press, and we'll tell them the truth. We signed a paper to save our families. But the marriage? The marriage is real. I love him."

Arthur's head snapped towards her, his heart hammering against his ribs. The cold, analytical framework of his life didn't merely shatter. It dissolved.

Richard frowned, his smug composure cracking. "A touching performance. But a jury won't care about a sudden burst of romance when they see the original timeline in the prenuptial agreement."

"They will if the original document doesn't exist," Arthur said softly.

Before Richard or Victoria could react, Arthur's gaze shifted. A heavy manila envelope lay on the side table near the study door, exactly where Richard would keep something so volatile before its delivery in the morning.

Arthur lunged and snatched it up.

"Security!" Richard screamed, dropping his glass.

But Arthur was already moving. He didn't run for the front door. Instead, he spun on his heel and strode straight towards the massive, roaring stone fireplace at the centre of the living room.

Victoria shrieked as she rushed down the stairs. "Stop him! Don't let him burn it!"

Richard scrambled after him, but Arthur turned and used his broad frame to block the older man completely. With one swift, decisive motion, he pulled the thick stack of papers from the envelope. The bold title, PRENUPTIAL & CORPORATE MERGER AGREEMENT, was visible for a split second.

Then he threw it into the heart of the flames.

The pages caught almost instantly. Their edges blackened and curled inward as the fire consumed the ink, the signatures, the stipulations, and the two-year clause.

"You lunatic!" Richard roared, staring at the burning papers. "That was your only leverage to keep the chairmanship! Without your grandfather's clause verified, the board will call a vote tomorrow!"

Arthur watched as the last embers of the contract crumbled to ash. When he turned back to face the Montgomerys, there was no fear in his expression. There was only a terrifying, absolute freedom.

He crossed to Evelyn, slid his arm around her waist, and drew her against his chest. He looked at her with a raw, fierce devotion that made Victoria choke back a sob of pure envy.

"Let them vote," Arthur said, his voice carrying across the vast hall. "I don't need a piece of paper to rule Sterling Holdings. And I don't need a contract to keep my wife."

His thumb brushed her cheek.

"Let's go home, Mrs. Sterling."

They turned their backs on the ruined Montgomerys and walked out into the rain together.

The golden cage was gone, and only the real story remained.

The heavy iron doors of the Montgomery manor clicked shut behind them, cutting off Richard's furious shouting and Victoria's shrill protests. The storm had not let up, but as Arthur and Evelyn descended the grand stone steps, the downpour no longer felt like a threat. It felt like a cleansing. Arthur kept his arm around Evelyn's waist, pulling her against his side to shield her from the wind as they reached the waiting Maybach. The driver held the door open, his eyes wide with awe and relief at seeing them emerge unharmed. They slid into the leather interior, and the door sealed with a quiet thud that locked out the rest of the world. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The adrenaline that had carried them through the confrontation began to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion and something else: a raw, uncharted vulnerability. Arthur turned to look at her. His wet hair clung to his forehead, and his tuxedo shirt was soaked through, but his eyes were completely clea

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   The Price of a Kiss

Before a single word could be exchanged, Arthur reached for her. His large hand slid firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his side with a possessive intensity that made a few nearby socialites gasp. "Everything all right?" he murmured, his voice low and rough, meant only for her. "Victoria tried to write our script for us," Evelyn whispered, looking up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I think it's time we showed her who the directors are." A dark, prideful fire kindled in Arthur's grey eyes. "With pleasure." Right there, in the centre of the Waldorf ballroom, beneath the watchful gaze of the Sterling board and a stunned Victoria Montgomery, Arthur leaned down. It was no polite, corporate kiss. His hand tightened at her waist, anchoring her to him, while the other rose to cup the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline. He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, deeply intense, unmistakably public kiss. It was a display of passion that shatt

The wall of camera flashes detonated the moment Arthur's shoes hit the pavement. He turned, ignoring the shouting reporters, and held out his hand to guide Evelyn from the car. As she stepped into the crisp autumn air, the emerald silk of her gown caught the glare of the flashbulbs, making her look radiant against the dark New York night. Arthur slid an arm around her waist and drew her flush against his side. Evelyn didn't stiffen. She leaned into his warmth, her hand resting naturally against his lapel as they climbed the velvet-roped carpet. The transition from penthouse rehearsal to the real world was seamless. "Mr. Sterling! Is it true it was a whirlwind romance?" a reporter shouted over the barricade. "Mrs. Sterling, look over here!" another called. Arthur gave the press a controlled, perfectly practised smile, but his eyes remained sharp and watchful as he guided her through the heavy glass doors of the Waldorf Astoria, leaving the roar of the paparazzi behind. Inside, th

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   The Night Before the Gala

"We have a problem," Evelyn said the following evening as Arthur walked out of the library corridor. The Waldorf Astoria gala was tomorrow night. "Us," she continued. "We can talk the talk, Arthur, but tomorrow there will be hundreds of cameras. If our body language looks stiff, the contract narrative wins. We need to rehearse the choreography until it looks like second nature." Arthur crossed the marble floor slowly and stopped exactly three feet away. "Fine. We'll start with basic navigation. When I guide you through a crowd..." He stepped into her space, and the clean scent of cedarwood enveloped her. Slowly, he reached out and placed his palm against the small of her back. Evelyn winced at the unexpected warmth of his hand. "Too stiff," Arthur observed, his voice dropping to a low murmur. He slid his hand lower, anchoring it against her hip, and drew her a full step closer until the tips of her shoes brushed against his. "Lean into my weight. Let your shoulder rest agains

Arthur took a slow, heavy step into the library, and the air thickened with tension. "Put it back," he said. His voice was flat, edged with chilling authority. Evelyn's hand trembled, but she returned the leather journal to the drawer and turned the key in the lock. "Arthur, we need to talk about what your grandfather wrote. If your position on the board is that fragile..." "We don't need to do anything, Evelyn, except follow the terms of the contract you signed." He cut her off cleanly. "You violated the single boundary I set in this house. Do not mistake my financial backing for an invitation into my life. Go to your room. We're done here." Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat, then lifted her chin in defiance. "I'm your wife for the next two years, Arthur, not your employee. You can't just order me around in your own apartment." "I can," Arthur replied. He opened his laptop and shut her out completely. The three days that followed were defined by a brutal, free
