The Night Before the Gala

"We have a problem," Evelyn said the following evening as Arthur walked out of the library corridor.

The Waldorf Astoria gala was tomorrow night.

"Us," she continued. "We can talk the talk, Arthur, but tomorrow there will be hundreds of cameras. If our body language looks stiff, the contract narrative wins. We need to rehearse the choreography until it looks like second nature."

Arthur crossed the marble floor slowly and stopped exactly three feet away.

"Fine. We'll start with basic navigation. When I guide you through a crowd..."

He stepped into her space, and the clean scent of cedarwood enveloped her. Slowly, he reached out and placed his palm against the small of her back.

Evelyn winced at the unexpected warmth of his hand.

"Too stiff," Arthur observed, his voice dropping to a low murmur.

He slid his hand lower, anchoring it against her hip, and drew her a full step closer until the tips of her shoes brushed against his.

"Lean into my weight. Let your shoulder rest against my chest."

Evelyn drew a slow breath and allowed herself to tilt until she rested against the solid wall of him. Arthur raised his left hand and intertwined his fingers with hers, locking them together, while his right hand tightened at her waist.

"And if..." Her heart hammered wildly. "If they ask for a kiss?"

His gaze dropped to her lips, and his jaw tightened.

"Then we give them exactly what they want."

He leaned down slowly. Evelyn held her breath as his lips brushed the corner of her mouth, a slow, agonisingly gentle rehearsal that made her knees go weak.

When he finally stepped back, his eyes were dark and unsettled.

"That should be sufficient for the red carpet," Arthur said, his voice strained as he turned away. "Tomorrow, the war begins."

Arthur Sterling hated variables he could not control.

The most unpredictable variable in his life sat three feet away from him in the back of his Maybach. The interior was silent, the cool blue ambient lighting catching the edge of Evelyn's profile as she stared out of the window.

She looked breathtaking. The emerald silk gown he had ordered clung to her like a second skin, and the Vance family diamond at her throat caught the light with every shallow breath she took.

Arthur adjusted his cuffs, his fingers brushing the gold watch at his wrist. His hands were perfectly steady, and his posture immaculate. To any outsider, he was the picture of corporate dominance, ready to face the Sterling Holdings board and secure his empire.

But inside his chest, his heart was keeping a very different rhythm.

Too stiff, he had told her during the rehearsal. He had called it choreography. He had told himself it was a clinical necessity, a way to protect the merger.

Now he knew he had been lying to himself.

The moment his palm touched the small of her back, the cold, analytical framework he had built his life upon had begun to crack. He hadn't been thinking about the board or his grandfather's archaic inheritance clause. He had been aware of the warmth of her skin through the fabric, the sudden catch in her breath, and the fierce, unyielding defiance in her eyes that made him want to drop every wall he owned.

And the kiss.

That brief, agonising brush of his lips against the corner of her mouth had cost him every ounce of his famed willpower. He had barely stopped himself from pulling her closer against his chest and never letting go.

His eyes drifted to Evelyn's lap. Her fingers were laced tightly, her knuckles pale around her satin clutch. She was terrified, yet she was forcing herself to sit like a queen.

I didn't buy a puppet, Evelyn. I bought a partner who actually has a spine.

The words he had spoken days ago echoed in his mind, and they were the truth.

His grandfather's journal claimed that Arthur lacked empathy, that he would destroy himself without someone to anchor him. Arthur had scoffed when he first read it. But looking at Evelyn now, he realised the old man had been right.

He no longer wanted only to save his chairmanship. He wanted to protect her. He wanted to dismantle anyone who dared to make her feel small, whether it was his own mother or Victoria Montgomery.

"Arthur?"

Evelyn's quiet voice broke his train of thought. She had turned from the window, her dark eyes meeting his.

"You're staring. Is something wrong with the dress? Does it need adjusting?"

A faint, genuine smirk touched his lips, an expression that had never once made it into the business pages.

He reached across the leather seat and slid his large hand over hers, gently loosening her clenched fingers before intertwining them with his own. She flinched in surprise, then slowly relaxed, letting her palm settle into his warmth.

"The dress is perfect," Arthur said, his voice low and rough, carrying a weight far heavier than any corporate decree. "And the margins don't matter tonight. Remember the choreography, Evelyn. But more importantly, remember that I'm right beside you. We walk in together, and we walk out together."

Evelyn looked down at their joined hands, a soft flush creeping up her neck. When she looked up again, the fear in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, dangerous resolve that mirrored his own.

"Together," she agreed softly.

The Maybach slowed to a smooth stop before the glittering entrance of the Waldorf Astoria. Outside, a wall of camera flashes burst against the tinted windows, and the roar of the paparazzi echoed through the chassis.

The driver stepped out to open the door. Arthur tightened his grip on her hand for one last private second, drawing on her strength before the mask snapped back into place.

The cold billionaire would be on display for the world to see.

But as he stepped into the blinding white light and turned to guide his wife out of the car, he knew one thing with absolute certainty.

The contract was the lie. The love story was the only real thing left.

The heavy iron doors of the Montgomery manor clicked shut behind them, cutting off Richard's furious shouting and Victoria's shrill protests. The storm had not let up, but as Arthur and Evelyn descended the grand stone steps, the downpour no longer felt like a threat. It felt like a cleansing. Arthur kept his arm around Evelyn's waist, pulling her against his side to shield her from the wind as they reached the waiting Maybach. The driver held the door open, his eyes wide with awe and relief at seeing them emerge unharmed. They slid into the leather interior, and the door sealed with a quiet thud that locked out the rest of the world. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The adrenaline that had carried them through the confrontation began to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion and something else: a raw, uncharted vulnerability. Arthur turned to look at her. His wet hair clung to his forehead, and his tuxedo shirt was soaked through, but his eyes were completely clea

The rain fell in sheets as the Maybach tore down the slick highway towards the sprawling Montgomery estate in upstate New York. Inside the cabin, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the aggressive slap of the windshield wipers. Arthur sat perfectly rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles jumped. The cold, calculating billionaire was gone. In his place sat a man running on pure desperation. He checked his watch: 1:14 a.m. The SEC offices would open in less than eight hours. If Victoria leaked that document, Sterling Holdings could be thrown into chaos, and the Vance mills would be crushed in the fallout. Beside him, Evelyn stared straight ahead, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The emerald silk of her gown seemed to mock the ruin closing in on them. "Arthur," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If we can't get it back..." "We will." His voice dropped to a dangerous rasp. He reached across the console and gripped her hand, his palm warm against her ice-cold

Before a single word could be exchanged, Arthur reached for her. His large hand slid firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his side with a possessive intensity that made a few nearby socialites gasp. "Everything all right?" he murmured, his voice low and rough, meant only for her. "Victoria tried to write our script for us," Evelyn whispered, looking up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I think it's time we showed her who the directors are." A dark, prideful fire kindled in Arthur's grey eyes. "With pleasure." Right there, in the centre of the Waldorf ballroom, beneath the watchful gaze of the Sterling board and a stunned Victoria Montgomery, Arthur leaned down. It was no polite, corporate kiss. His hand tightened at her waist, anchoring her to him, while the other rose to cup the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline. He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, deeply intense, unmistakably public kiss. It was a display of passion that shatt

The wall of camera flashes detonated the moment Arthur's shoes hit the pavement. He turned, ignoring the shouting reporters, and held out his hand to guide Evelyn from the car. As she stepped into the crisp autumn air, the emerald silk of her gown caught the glare of the flashbulbs, making her look radiant against the dark New York night. Arthur slid an arm around her waist and drew her flush against his side. Evelyn didn't stiffen. She leaned into his warmth, her hand resting naturally against his lapel as they climbed the velvet-roped carpet. The transition from penthouse rehearsal to the real world was seamless. "Mr. Sterling! Is it true it was a whirlwind romance?" a reporter shouted over the barricade. "Mrs. Sterling, look over here!" another called. Arthur gave the press a controlled, perfectly practised smile, but his eyes remained sharp and watchful as he guided her through the heavy glass doors of the Waldorf Astoria, leaving the roar of the paparazzi behind. Inside, th

Arthur took a slow, heavy step into the library, and the air thickened with tension. "Put it back," he said. His voice was flat, edged with chilling authority. Evelyn's hand trembled, but she returned the leather journal to the drawer and turned the key in the lock. "Arthur, we need to talk about what your grandfather wrote. If your position on the board is that fragile..." "We don't need to do anything, Evelyn, except follow the terms of the contract you signed." He cut her off cleanly. "You violated the single boundary I set in this house. Do not mistake my financial backing for an invitation into my life. Go to your room. We're done here." Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat, then lifted her chin in defiance. "I'm your wife for the next two years, Arthur, not your employee. You can't just order me around in your own apartment." "I can," Arthur replied. He opened his laptop and shut her out completely. The three days that followed were defined by a brutal, free
