The Price of a Kiss

Before a single word could be exchanged, Arthur reached for her. His large hand slid firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his side with a possessive intensity that made a few nearby socialites gasp.

"Everything all right?" he murmured, his voice low and rough, meant only for her.

"Victoria tried to write our script for us," Evelyn whispered, looking up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I think it's time we showed her who the directors are."

A dark, prideful fire kindled in Arthur's grey eyes. "With pleasure."

Right there, in the centre of the Waldorf ballroom, beneath the watchful gaze of the Sterling board and a stunned Victoria Montgomery, Arthur leaned down.

It was no polite, corporate kiss. His hand tightened at her waist, anchoring her to him, while the other rose to cup the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline.

He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, deeply intense, unmistakably public kiss. It was a display of passion that shattered any rumour of a cold, sterile arrangement. Evelyn responded instantly, her fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck as she lost herself in the warmth of his kiss.

When Arthur finally drew back, his breathing was uneven, his eyes dark and fixed on her face.

The whispers in the ballroom had stopped. Victoria stood frozen, her face pale, her wine glass trembling in her hand. The senior board executives were nodding their approval, thoroughly convinced by the undeniable chemistry between the new Mr. and Mrs. Sterling.

Arthur kept his arm firmly around Evelyn's waist as he turned to face the room. His stoic mask snapped back into place for the crowd, though his fingers continued to lightly caress her hip.

They had won the first battle. But as Evelyn leaned into his side, she knew Victoria wouldn't stop here.

The corporate war had begun.

The partition glass of the Maybach rose, shutting out the fading flashes of the paparazzi and leaving the backseat in a heavy, charged silence.

Arthur sat back against the leather, one arm resting along the top of the seat just behind Evelyn's shoulders. He had loosened his bow tie and unbuttoned his collar, but the tense line of his jaw showed he was far from relaxed.

Beside him, Evelyn stared down at her lap. The certainty she had felt on the ballroom floor was slowly evaporating, leaving a raw, trembling vulnerability in its place. Her lips still burned.

"You handled Victoria perfectly," Arthur said, his voice slicing through the quiet. "The board was completely convinced. Sterling Holdings won't dare fluctuate tomorrow morning."

"Is that all it was to you?"

Her voice was barely a whisper, but it cut cleanly across the space between them. She turned her head, her dark eyes locking onto his grey ones.

"A successful navigation of the market? A strategic counter-move against Victoria?"

Arthur's eyes narrowed slightly as he noticed the tremor in her lower lip.

"Evelyn, we discussed the parameters. It was a necessary performance to protect the merger."

"Performance doesn't feel like that, Arthur."

Her voice cracked as exhaustion and humiliation washed over her. She pulled away from his side and pressed herself against the opposite door.

"When you held the back of my neck, when you kissed me, it didn't feel like choreography. For a second, I forgot about the contract. I forgot about the mills. If I'm the only one losing my mind under this roof while you calculate the next quarterly balance sheet, I need to know right now."

Arthur stared at her, his expression hardening into a mask of steel. The silence stretched between them for the rest of the ride, thick and suffocating, until the Maybach finally slid into the underground garage of the penthouse.

They rode the private elevator up in complete silence. When the doors opened, Evelyn stepped out at once, kicked off her designer heels and walked towards the floor-to-ceiling windows of the dark living room, hiding the hot tears gathering in her eyes.

Behind her, the elevator doors shut with a heavy click. She heard Arthur drop his jacket onto the sofa. His footsteps approached, slow and deliberate, until the familiar scent of cedarwood enveloped her once more.

"I have spent my entire life controlling every variable, Evelyn," he said quietly, stopping just inches behind her. "I calculate risk. I project margins. I don't do anything on impulse."

Evelyn kept her back to him, her shoulders tense. "I know."

"But you are wrong about tonight."

His large hands settled gently but firmly on her shoulders before turning her to face him. The coldness was gone from his eyes, replaced by a dark, raw intensity that stole her breath.

"When I kissed you in that ballroom, I wasn't thinking about the board. I wasn't thinking about Victoria or my grandfather's inheritance clause. I was consumed by the fact that you were standing right in front of me, fighting for us."

He stepped closer. His thumb rose to trace the line of her lower lip, his touch warm and not quite steady.

"Contracts can be amended, Evelyn. The two-year term. The separate wings. What if I don't want a business transaction anymore?"

His voice dropped.

"What if I want a wife?"

Before she could catch her breath to answer, the sharp, persistent buzz of her phone broke the spell.

She stepped back, trembling, and pulled the device from her satin clutch. The screen showed a message from an unknown number. As she opened it, the colour drained from her face.

It was a crystal-clear photograph of the first page of their PRENUPTIAL & CORPORATE MERGER AGREEMENT, stamped with the Sterling corporate seal.

Beneath the image was a single line of text:

A pretty public display won't save you when the SEC receives the full document tomorrow morning. Sleep well, Mrs. Sterling.

Evelyn looked up at Arthur, her voice nearly failing as she held out the phone.

"Arthur... it's over. Victoria has the contract."

The heavy iron doors of the Montgomery manor clicked shut behind them, cutting off Richard's furious shouting and Victoria's shrill protests. The storm had not let up, but as Arthur and Evelyn descended the grand stone steps, the downpour no longer felt like a threat. It felt like a cleansing. Arthur kept his arm around Evelyn's waist, pulling her against his side to shield her from the wind as they reached the waiting Maybach. The driver held the door open, his eyes wide with awe and relief at seeing them emerge unharmed. They slid into the leather interior, and the door sealed with a quiet thud that locked out the rest of the world. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The adrenaline that had carried them through the confrontation began to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion and something else: a raw, uncharted vulnerability. Arthur turned to look at her. His wet hair clung to his forehead, and his tuxedo shirt was soaked through, but his eyes were completely clea

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   Beyond the Contract.

The rain fell in sheets as the Maybach tore down the slick highway towards the sprawling Montgomery estate in upstate New York. Inside the cabin, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the aggressive slap of the windshield wipers. Arthur sat perfectly rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles jumped. The cold, calculating billionaire was gone. In his place sat a man running on pure desperation. He checked his watch: 1:14 a.m. The SEC offices would open in less than eight hours. If Victoria leaked that document, Sterling Holdings could be thrown into chaos, and the Vance mills would be crushed in the fallout. Beside him, Evelyn stared straight ahead, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The emerald silk of her gown seemed to mock the ruin closing in on them. "Arthur," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If we can't get it back..." "We will." His voice dropped to a dangerous rasp. He reached across the console and gripped her hand, his palm warm against her ice-cold

The wall of camera flashes detonated the moment Arthur's shoes hit the pavement. He turned, ignoring the shouting reporters, and held out his hand to guide Evelyn from the car. As she stepped into the crisp autumn air, the emerald silk of her gown caught the glare of the flashbulbs, making her look radiant against the dark New York night. Arthur slid an arm around her waist and drew her flush against his side. Evelyn didn't stiffen. She leaned into his warmth, her hand resting naturally against his lapel as they climbed the velvet-roped carpet. The transition from penthouse rehearsal to the real world was seamless. "Mr. Sterling! Is it true it was a whirlwind romance?" a reporter shouted over the barricade. "Mrs. Sterling, look over here!" another called. Arthur gave the press a controlled, perfectly practised smile, but his eyes remained sharp and watchful as he guided her through the heavy glass doors of the Waldorf Astoria, leaving the roar of the paparazzi behind. Inside, th

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   The Night Before the Gala

"We have a problem," Evelyn said the following evening as Arthur walked out of the library corridor. The Waldorf Astoria gala was tomorrow night. "Us," she continued. "We can talk the talk, Arthur, but tomorrow there will be hundreds of cameras. If our body language looks stiff, the contract narrative wins. We need to rehearse the choreography until it looks like second nature." Arthur crossed the marble floor slowly and stopped exactly three feet away. "Fine. We'll start with basic navigation. When I guide you through a crowd..." He stepped into her space, and the clean scent of cedarwood enveloped her. Slowly, he reached out and placed his palm against the small of her back. Evelyn winced at the unexpected warmth of his hand. "Too stiff," Arthur observed, his voice dropping to a low murmur. He slid his hand lower, anchoring it against her hip, and drew her a full step closer until the tips of her shoes brushed against his. "Lean into my weight. Let your shoulder rest agains

  • The Billionaire's Fortune Bride   A Reason to Fight

Arthur took a slow, heavy step into the library, and the air thickened with tension. "Put it back," he said. His voice was flat, edged with chilling authority. Evelyn's hand trembled, but she returned the leather journal to the drawer and turned the key in the lock. "Arthur, we need to talk about what your grandfather wrote. If your position on the board is that fragile..." "We don't need to do anything, Evelyn, except follow the terms of the contract you signed." He cut her off cleanly. "You violated the single boundary I set in this house. Do not mistake my financial backing for an invitation into my life. Go to your room. We're done here." Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat, then lifted her chin in defiance. "I'm your wife for the next two years, Arthur, not your employee. You can't just order me around in your own apartment." "I can," Arthur replied. He opened his laptop and shut her out completely. The three days that followed were defined by a brutal, free
