Chapter 1 A Price on Dignity

Author: Celeste Arden
The wedding hall was bathed in a harsh, blinding light.

The emcee smiled brightly and handed the microphone to Alice. "Come on, let the bride change how she addresses you. She should call you Mom. The gift is just symbolic—10,000 dollars with best wishes!"

I held the wine glass in my hand, ready to propose a toast.

Alice sat in her chair, eyelids half-lowered, clutching the money without moving a muscle.

"Ten thousand? That's history."

She curled her lip, her voice ringing across the entire hall.

"If you want to marry into the Forrest family, you follow our new rules. Frankly, I don't see any sincerity from you. Let's round it up to 500,000."

The room fell dead silent.

The emcee froze, microphone still raised.

My hand stiffened midair. I turned to look at Dylan.

He stood there in the suit worth 30,000 I had bought for him with his head down, eyes glued to his phone, acting like none of this concerned him.

I took a slow breath, forcing down the anger rising in my chest. "Mom, the gift is usually from the mother-in-law to the daughter-in-law. I didn't even ask for a wedding gift. I paid for the house in full myself, and my family covered the entire wedding banquet.

"You insisted on 10,000 before, and I agreed. Now, you're suddenly demanding 500,000? Don't you think that's too much?"

Alice rolled her eyes and opened her mouth.

A sharp chime rang in my head.

"Malicious fraud detected. Honest Lies System activated. Target: vicious mother-in-law. Penalty: forced truth-telling."

Alice's lips trembled, then she spoke. "What do you mean by that? If I don't drain your pockets now, how is Gideon supposed to buy a house outright? You expect him to take on a mortgage? That'd be exhausting!"

The room exploded into conversation.

Guests exchanged shocked looks, whispers spreading like wildfire.

"Oh, my God… She's squeezing the daughter-in-law dry just to buy her younger son a house? That's shameless…"

Alice slapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide in horror, as if she couldn't understand why she had just blurted out her true thoughts.

Dylan finally looked up, his face ashen. He tugged at her sleeve. "Mom, what did you just say?"

I let the wine glass fall from my hand.

It shattered as it hit the floor, wine splashing onto Dylan's pants.

"So, that's the plan? You're trying to strip me for everything I have?" I looked at them, my voice cold. "If I don't pay, does that mean there's no wedding?"

Alice opened her mouth again, but her response was no longer under her control.

"If you don't pay, then get lost! You're just a pregnant, used woman. Your belly's already showing. Who else would want you besides Dylan?

"You're the cheap one here, throwing yourself at us! Once you marry in, your money will be mine, the house will belong to Gideon, and you'll spend the rest of your life serving our entire family!"

Gabriel stood beside the car with a trench coat draped over his arm. He stepped forward and gently placed it over my shoulders.I turned back to look at the courthouse and gave it a small nod. "It's over.""Then, shouldn't we talk about what comes next?" Gabriel raised an eyebrow."Like what?""For example… considering becoming Mrs. York not only in name?"He slipped a velvet box out of his pocket and opened it. My eyes promptly fell on a pink diamond ring nestled inside. This time, he wasn't doing it to prove a point or doing it for show. The way he looked at me… I could tell there was only love in his eyes, the kind that was only meant for me.…As five years passed, I rose to become the vice president of York Group and Gabriel's Mrs. York. That 100 billion I made to Gabriel was never an empty promise. In fact, I had multiplied my promise to him several times over with the startup capital the system gave me, and under his helpful guidance.I was no longer the woman who ben

The evidence Gideon provided, coupled with what Gabriel had already uncovered, was more than enough to put Dylan away for life."Good." I closed the laptop."Well, hand it over. Give me the money!" Gideon reached straight for the suitcase.I pressed a hand on it and curled my lips into a faint smile. "Gideon, aren't you forgetting something?""Huh… What?""You still owe me 300,000."His expression darkened. "Summer, you've got plenty of money. Are you seriously going to be such a penny pincher? Besides, you promised me a million!""I promised you money," I said calmly. "I never said it would be cash."I flipped open the suitcase. However, there weren't stacks of bills in it. Instead, all it contained was a thick pile of legal notices and court summons."These are the charges against you—extortion, illegal gambling, and conspiracy to commit fraud. Gideon, did you really think throwing your brother under the bus would keep you safe? You were all in on it, so not one of you is w

"I swapped out his medication for vitamins!" Alice shrieked, her voice rising in her hysteria. "I let him die in pain! That was how I could save the money for Dylan's college tuition!"Her face twisted with bitter resentment."And look how it all turned out! The son I worked myself to the bone to raise ended up with a curse like you! I would've sold you off to some backwater village years ago and earned a huge sum if I'd known things would turn out like this!"Everyone could only stare at her in shock.Even the burly debt collectors felt a chill crawl up their spines upon hearing her words.'This old hag actually did something that monstrous?'"Th-That's murder, isn't it?" someone whispered.Gabriel raised a hand. The lawyer behind him stepped forward immediately."We've recorded everything she just said. I picked up the report and stared at the words. 'No gestational sac detected.'"Gabriel…" My nose stung as I felt a sense of warmth surge up my heart. "Why would you go this far for me?"Gabriel stepped in front of me, looking down at me calmly. Then, he abruptly reached out and gently pinched my earlobe."Because you said you'd bring 100 billion and devote your life to me." His lips curved slightly. "I'm a businessman. I honor all the contracts I sign. Now, it's your turn."I blinked, stunned. "My turn… for what?"Gabriel pointed toward the door."There's a charity gala tonight. You're coming with me. As Mrs. York, your job is to outshine everyone there. I want the whole room to see that someone like Dylan has never been worthy of you in the first place."…The Forrest family fell into complete chaos once word got out that Dylan had been arrested.Alice was only charged with attempted robbery.
