THE MORNING AFTER

(Damien's POV)

I walked into the mansion trying to look normal. Trying to act like I hadn't spent the night in a hotel with a woman whose name I couldn't remember. Trying to pretend I wasn't falling apart piece by piece.

The house was almost quiet. Some of the staff hadn't resumed duty yet.

This was the last place I wanted to be after such a horrible night out.

The staff nodded at me as I passed. I forced myself to walk steadily and not like a man who had taken seven bottles of alcohol.

They didn't look suspicious. They didn't look like they knew. Good. Because if Eleanor found out about last night, she would use it against me somehow. She always did.

I went straight to my room and took a long shower. With a very hot water that burned my skin, turning it pink, and soap that cost more than someone's annual rent. I was trying to wash away the smell of alcohol and her perfume and my bad decisions.

When I came out, my phone was buzzing with messages. Most were work rela

THE TRAP(Damien's POV)Eleanor returned home just before dinner. I heard her car pull up, heard her voice in the entrance hall giving instructions to the staff. My body tensed automatically, waiting for the confrontation I knew was coming. She would have heard by now. About the club. About the hotel. About my night of weakness and stupidity. Eleanor always found out everything.I braced myself as I walked down to the dining room. She was already seated at the head of the table, looking through some documents. She glanced up when I entered."Good evening, Damien. I hope you had a productive day.""It was fine." I muttered, trying not to act suspicious."Good. Sit down. Dinner will be served shortly." She smiled. She smiled?I sat down quietly, waiting for the other shoe to drop. For the questions about where I had been. For the lecture about family reputation. For the threats. But nothing came.Eleanor continued reviewing her documents. Victoria joined us a few minutes later. The staf

THE ABDUCTION(Serena's POV)I couldn't move. I couldn't think. The phone was still pressed to my ear, but I couldn't hear Elena anymore. All I could hear was the roaring in my head. The sound of my world collapsing.Eleanor has Isabella. My legs gave out. I started to sink to the floor, but strong hands caught me before my butt hit the floor. It was Lysander. He had moved faster than I thought possible. He was holding me up with his face close to mine. I could see the worry in his eyes."Serena? Serena, what happened?" His voice was urgent, and demanding.I tried to speak, but no words came out. My throat was closed. My mouth wouldn't work. I was trembling. I was shaking so hard my teeth were chattering.“Are you cold?” He asked, pulling off his jacket.I shook my head. Then, he noticed the phone in my hands and took it from me. He saw Elena’s name on the screen."Elena? This is Lysander. What happened?"I could hear Elena's voice, tiny and distorted through the speaker.Lysander's f

THE WORST FEAR(Serena's POV)The day at the office had been long but productive. The large windows showed the city slowly darkening, the lights were beginning to twinkle like scattered stars. Lysander and I had spent hours and hours reviewing financial documents. We spread them out across the massive oak table, bank statements, transaction records, shell company profiles. We were planning the next phase of our strategy against Eleanor. Every paper was a weapon. Every number was a step closer to bringing her down.My eyes were tired from staring at numbers, but my mind was sharp, and focused. Lysander was a calm, steady presence across from me. He moved pages with a quiet efficiency."Claire's condition is improving faster than expected," Lysander said, breaking a comfortable silence. He turned his laptop around so I could see. He pulled up new medical reports on the screen. The charts and graphs showed a positive trend. "The doctors say she'll be strong enough to move to a private fa

THE CHARITY LIE(Damien's POV)The next morning, Eleanor called Victoria and me to her study before breakfast. She looked pleased with herself, which always meant something terrible was about to happen."We have a photo opportunity today," she announced. "A charity event. We'll be distributing food and clothing to motherless homes across the city."Victoria smiled. "Excellent idea. The press will love it. Especially after all the negative attention.""Exactly. We need to remind the people that the Blackwoods are generous. That we care about the less fortunate."I said nothing. I knew how these events went. Eleanor loved looking charitable while spending as little money as possible."The van will be loaded and ready by ten," Eleanor continued. "We'll visit three homes. Make sure to smile for the cameras. Look compassionate. Touch the children's heads. You know the routine.""What are we distributing?" I asked."The usual. Clothes, canned food, some toys. Nothing expensive.""Where did

THE BREAKING POINT(Damien's POV)I couldn't stop looking at the photo. Serena in her silver dress. Smiling at another man. Looking happier than she ever looked with me.I had stared at it for hours last night. I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her smile. That beautiful, genuine smile that should have been mine. But it wasn't mine. It never had been. Now I was sitting in a board meeting, surrounded by executives and investors, and I couldn't focus on anything they were saying. My mind was thousands of miles away in California. With the woman I had destroyed."Mr. Blackwood?" Someone was talking to me. "What are your thoughts on the proposal?"I blinked. "I'm sorry. Could you repeat the question?"The man looked annoyed. "The development project in Brooklyn. Do we move forward or wait for the environmental studies to be completed?""Whatever Eleanor decides," I said flatly. The room went quiet. Everyone looked uncomfortable.Eleanor was sitting at the head of the t
