THE AFTERMATH

(Damien's POV)

I spent the entire day after Eleanor's oath locked in my room. I couldn't face anyone. I couldn't look at myself in the mirror. The shame of what had happened was overwhelming.

I had peed myself. Like a frightened child.

But it wasn't just the physical reaction that bothered me. It was what it represented. My complete and total fear of Eleanor. My inability to stand up to her. My weakness.

Victoria knocked on my door around noon. "Damien? Can I come in?"

"Go away." I said.

"Come on. Eleanor wants to discuss the next steps."

I opened the door. Victoria looked at me with barely concealed amusement.

"You look terrible." He nose scrunched up in disgust.

"Thanks." I said.

She walked in and sat on my bed. "Eleanor is already putting her plan into motion. She's contacted several of her connections in New York. By the end of the week, Claire won't be able to get a job anywhere in the city."

"That's cruel." I said, rubbing my chin. There was nothing I could do to s

THE CHARITY LIE(Damien's POV)The next morning, Eleanor called Victoria and me to her study before breakfast. She looked pleased with herself, which always meant something terrible was about to happen."We have a photo opportunity today," she announced. "A charity event. We'll be distributing food and clothing to motherless homes across the city."Victoria smiled. "Excellent idea. The press will love it. Especially after all the negative attention.""Exactly. We need to remind the people that the Blackwoods are generous. That we care about the less fortunate."I said nothing. I knew how these events went. Eleanor loved looking charitable while spending as little money as possible."The van will be loaded and ready by ten," Eleanor continued. "We'll visit three homes. Make sure to smile for the cameras. Look compassionate. Touch the children's heads. You know the routine.""What are we distributing?" I asked."The usual. Clothes, canned food, some toys. Nothing expensive.""Where did

THE BREAKING POINT(Damien's POV)I couldn't stop looking at the photo. Serena in her silver dress. Smiling at another man. Looking happier than she ever looked with me.I had stared at it for hours last night. I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her smile. That beautiful, genuine smile that should have been mine. But it wasn't mine. It never had been. Now I was sitting in a board meeting, surrounded by executives and investors, and I couldn't focus on anything they were saying. My mind was thousands of miles away in California. With the woman I had destroyed."Mr. Blackwood?" Someone was talking to me. "What are your thoughts on the proposal?"I blinked. "I'm sorry. Could you repeat the question?"The man looked annoyed. "The development project in Brooklyn. Do we move forward or wait for the environmental studies to be completed?""Whatever Eleanor decides," I said flatly. The room went quiet. Everyone looked uncomfortable.Eleanor was sitting at the head of the t

THE FIRST STRIKE(Serena's POV)The morning after the charity event, I woke up feeling different. The silver dress was hanging in my closet, a reminder that last night had been real. I had walked among the most powerful people in the world. I had shaken hands with senators and business moguls. I had seen the fear in their eyes when they looked at Lysander. And now it was time to put that power to use.My phone rang while I was making breakfast for Isabella. It was Lysander."Good morning," his voice was calm but serious. "We need to talk. Can you come to my office?""When?""Now. Elena can watch Isabella, yes?""Yes, but what's this about?""We're moving forward. Today. I'll explain when you get here."He hung up before I could ask more questions.Elena agreed to watch Isabella without hesitation. "Go," she said. "Do what you need to do."Thirty minutes later, I was sitting in Lysander's office. He looked like he hadn't slept. There were papers spread across his desk and his laptop wa

THE WORLD OF POWER(Serena's POV)The dress Lysander had sent to my apartment was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Silver silk that shimmered like moonlight. Pearls sewn into intricate patterns across the bodice. A long train that pooled on the floor like liquid mercury."This must have cost a fortune," Elena said as she helped me zip it up."I don't even want to know how much," I replied, looking at myself in the mirror. I barely recognized the woman staring back at me. She looked powerful. Elegant. Nothing like the broken woman who had fled New York almost a year ago."You look like a queen," Elena said softly."I feel like an imposter.""That's because you're not used to being treated the way you deserve. Get used to it, Serena. This is your life now."Isabella was already asleep. I kissed her forehead before I left, promising Elena I would be home before midnight.Lysander was waiting outside in a sleek black car. When I stepped out of the building, his eyes widened."You

MY DESPAIR(Damien's POV)The fundraiser had been exactly what Eleanor wanted. A perfect display of power and sympathy. We stood together on the stage while cameras flashed. I smiled when I was supposed to smile. I shook hands when I was supposed to shake hands. I told everyone how proud I was of my grandmother's dedication to helping trauma victims.Every word tasted like poison in my mouth. The event raised over five million dollars for mental health services. Eleanor gave a moving speech about the importance of supporting survivors. She even mentioned Claire by name, calling her brave and resilient. The crowd gave her a standing ovation.I wanted to vomit. After the event, we rode back to the mansion in silence. Eleanor looked satisfied."You did well tonight," she said as the car pulled up to the house. "Much better than I expected after your little tantrum yesterday.""Thank you," I said flatly."The press loved us. Did you see the photographers? They couldn't get enough pictures

THE PRICE OF DEFIANCE(Damien's POV)The Blackwood mansion felt like a gilded cage. The air was thick with Eleanor's satisfaction. Every newspaper and news channel praised our family's compassion in paying for Claire's medical care. They called us a pillar of strength. Each word was a lie that made me feel sick to my stomach.Eleanor was already planning her political campaign. She used the wave of public sympathy to present herself as a benevolent leader."With this goodwill, the city council seat is guaranteed," she said at dinner that evening, sipping her wine. "And after that, the mayor's office. No one can oppose us now."Victoria nodded eagerly. "It's perfect, Eleanor. You've turned a tragedy into a triumph. The polls are already showing a twenty point lead.""Twenty three points," Eleanor corrected. "I had them run the numbers this afternoon. The sympathy vote is exactly what we needed.""What about the Hendersons?" Victoria asked. "Are they still making noise?""They've been q
