The knocks were soft on the door. Loretta thought it couldn't have been one of the nurses coming to check up on her because they'd knock once and come right in. Loretta's first guess was Kendrick, so she tries standing up to go check. She reached out for her crutches next to her when her mother said not to.
"Don't worry, stay where you are. I'll go see who's at the door."
"Mom, it's my hospital room. I can get the door myself."
"Yeah, strong head, when you don't have a broken leg, you can get your doors yourself. She walks over to the door, muttering, "I leave you to live on your own, and soon you will have an accident and land yourself in a hospital with a broken bone." This was why Loretta would never mention that she had just woken up from a two-week coma.
