“Push, Margaret! One more time!” I screamed and gripped the nurse’s hand so hard my fingers hurt. One more push. One more moment. Then I would finally meet my baby.

“She’s coming,” the nurse said.

I squeezed my eyes shut and pushed with everything I had left. Then a sharp cry escaped me as the pressure suddenly disappeared.

For one breathless second, I smiled. “She’s here,” I whispered, tears falling down my cheeks. “My baby is here."

But the room went silent, My smile fading when I realized she wasn't crying. Why isn't she crying? “Is she okay?” I asked, trying to lift myself from the bed. “Please, someone tell me she’s okay.”

Nobody answered. I looked toward the foot of the bed. Dr. Harrison stood there with my baby in his arms, wrapped tightly in a white towel. He wasn't smiling. Neither was the nurse beside him. My heart began pounding.

“Doctor?” He looked at me. Something about his expression made fear crawl through my chest.

“Where is her cry?” I asked. “Why isn't she crying?”

Dr. Harrison lowered his eyes. “Margaret…”

“No.” I shook my head, don't say my name like that"

“I’m sorry.” Dr Harrison said

My heart stopped. “What?”

“Her heartbeat dropped during the final stage of labor. There was a cord complication. We tried everything we could, but…”

He paused.

My entire body went cold. “But what?”

“Your baby didn't survive.”

For a moment, I couldn't understand the words. Then I screamed. I tried to sit up, but pain ripped through my body. “No, you're lying! She was moving! I felt her moving!”

Dr. Harrison caught my shoulder and pushed me gently back against the mattress. “Margaret, you need to calm down.”

“Let me see her!” My eyes locked on the tiny baby in the nurse's arms. “Please,” I begged. Just let me hold her. Just once. Let me see my daughter.”

The nurse turned away.

“Please!” I screamed.

Nobody listened.

“Where are you taking her?” I asked

The nurse ignored me, carrying my baby toward the double doors. I fought against the doctor's hand. “Bring her back!”

“She’s gone, Margaret.” He said

“No!” My voice shattered. “She can't be gone. She's all I have.”

And she was.

Three months earlier, I had lost Marcus. My fiancé. My high school sweetheart. The man who had promised to grow old with me. A drunk driver had taken him from me in a rainy car crash, leaving me alone with our unborn daughter.

That baby had become the only reason I kept going. She was the last piece of Marcus I had left. And now she was gone too.

“Please,” I whispered, tears pouring down my face. “I just want my baby.”

Dr. Harrison looked at me for a long moment. Then he nodded toward the nurse. Something cold entered my IV.

“What are you—” My words became slurred. The room began spinning. “Wait…” I fought to keep my eyes open. I needed to see my daughter. I needed to hold her. But darkness swallowed me before I could.

When I woke up, the crib beside my bed was empty. My daughter was gone. And I believed that was the worst thing that could ever happen to me.

I was wrong.

The months that followed barely felt like living. I stopped answering calls. I stopped going outside. Some days, I couldn't even convince myself to get out of bed. Marcus was gone. My daughter was gone. And the tiny crib we'd built together sat untouched in the corner of my apartment. People told me time would heal me. It didn't, It only taught me how to hide the pain.

Six years passed. I learned how to smile when I needed to. I learned how to work when I needed money. I learned how to survive. But somewhere inside me, I was still that woman screaming in a hospital bed, begging someone to give her back her baby. I thought my daughter had died six years ago. I thought I'd buried the only part of Marcus I had left. I didn't know the truth.

My daughter had never died. She had been alive the entire time. And while I was drowning in grief, Dr. Harrison had walked through the hospital's back exit carrying a newborn baby in his arms, exchanging my living, breathing daughter for a briefcase full of money.

*Margaret's POV* The loud dial tone echoed in my ear. My hands shook so badly that I almost dropped my phone onto the cold tile floor. My chest felt tight, and I could barely breathe. "If you keep digging into the Vance child, your baby won't be the only thing that ended up six feet under six years ago." The voice had sounded changed, cold, and unnatural. Someone knew. Someone had seen me walk into that private lab downtown. Or maybe someone inside this mansion was watching everything I did. My mind raced. Dr. Harrison? A corrupt security guard? The rich people who had helped Victoria take my baby? Fear tightened around my throat. I closed my eyes and took three shaky breaths, trying to calm myself down. I couldn't stay in the dark kitchen. I needed to get back to my room, lock the door, and figure out what to do next. I stepped backward out of the kitchen, my vision still blurry from the panic. Because I wasn't looking behind me, my heel caught the edge of the hallway rug

*Margaret's POV*"Why are you in my mommy's room?!"Jasmine’s voice broke through the quiet room.I turned around, my heart pounding. I had been so focused on the photo of Victoria and the red hospital stamp that I hadn't heard her little footsteps. Jasmine stood in the doorway with her fists at her sides, her eyes red with anger."Jasmine—" I started, quickly putting the silver picture frame back on the vanity. My hands were shaking. "I'm sorry. The door was open, and I—""You're a liar! You're a thief!" she screamed, her voice shaking as she walked into the room. "Nobody comes in here! My dad said no one is allowed in my mommy's room! Get out!"She rushed toward me and pushed my waist with all her strength. I didn't push her back. I simply stepped away and let her be angry. She grabbed the silver frame from the table and held it tightly against her chest, glaring at me."I wasn't stealing anything, Jasmine. I promise," I said softly, keeping my voice calm. "I just saw the picture. Y

*Margaret's POV*"Looking for something, Margaret?"Alexander’s voice cut through the dark bedroom, low, smooth, and dangerously calm.My heart did a violent flip inside my chest. I quickly put my hand into my jacket pocket, making sure the small plastic bag with Jasmine’s hair strands was pushed all the way to the bottom. I slowly turned around, forcing my face into the most innocent expression I could muster. He was standing right in the doorway, blocking the dim hall light. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, his posture relaxed, but his eyes were sharp and unblinking in the shadow."I... I heard coughing," I lied, my voice steady despite the adrenaline rushing through my blood. "I just wanted to make sure Jasmine didn't drop her blanket. She was tossing around earlier."Alexander didn't move. He stood there for a long, silent moment, looking from me to the sleeping girl in the bed, then back to my face. The silence stretched so long I could hear the faint ticking

*Margaret's POV* Margaret. What on earth are you doing to my daughter?" Alexander’s voice made me freeze. I quickly moved back, my heart pounding as I looked up at him through my tears. He stood in the doorway in his dark suit, his eyes fixed on me with suspicion. "I... I wasn't doing anything," I stuttered, my voice raspy and pathetic. I hated how weak I sounded, but the image of that crescent shaped birthmark on Jasmine's ankle was burned into the back of my eyelids. "She was pulling my leg!" Jasmine shouted, immediately backing up toward the far corner of her room. She hugged her small arms around herself, glaring at me with a mix of anger and confusion. "She started crying and staring at me like a freak!" Alexander took three slow, deliberate steps into the room. He didn't look angry in a screaming way, he looked far worse. His expression was a wall of solid ice, calculating every move I made, every breath I took. "Get up," he ordered quietly. I pressed my palms against the

*Margaret's POV* I spent the entire night scrubbing the cherry stain out of my shirt, but the faint red mark stayed behind. A constant reminder of the little storm waiting for me at the Vance estate. By 7:30 AM, I was standing outside the massive iron gates again. My stomach was tied in knots, but I refused to turn back. I needed this job. The butler let me in and showed me upstairs to the second floor, stopping right in front of a pair of large white doors painted with faint pink butterflies. "Mr. Vance is currently in a board meeting downstairs," the butler said softly, keeping his voice low. "Miss Jasmine has been up since six. Good luck, Margaret." He gave me a look that felt more like a prayer than a goodbye, turned on his heel, and practically jogged down the hallway. I took a deep breath, smoothed down my jeans, and opened the door. The room was huge, bigger than my entire apartment.. filled with expensive toys, custom bookshelves, and a dollhouse that looked li

*Margaret's POV* Six years later... "If you don't take this job, Margaret, the landlord is literally going to throw your bags onto the street by Monday." My gay best friend, Leo, shoved a folded slip of paper into my hand. He had been pacing around my apartment for the last twenty minutes while I counted the remaining dollar notes sitting on my kitchen counter. It wasn't even enough to cover half of my rent, let alone buy groceries for the rest of the month. "I know," I said, running a hand over my face. "I'm not refusing to work, Leo. I'm just asking who this guy is. You said he pays ridiculously well, but nobody lasts more than two days in his house? That sounds like a trap." "It's not a trap, it's just his nightmare kid," Leo sighed, dropping onto my couch. "His name is Alexander Vance. Yes, that Vance, the billionaire who basically owns half the tech and real estate in the city. His wife passed away a few years ago, and ever since then, he’s been trying to hire a nann
