The figure stepped out from the shadow of the trees, and the faint moonlight finally illuminated his face.

Adrian.

"Adrian?" Alina whispered, not believing what she saw. "How can you be here?"

Renee lowered her hand, which had been ready to take action, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly though her vigilance hadn't fully faded.

"I took the first flight the moment I heard about Margaret," Adrian answered, out of breath, clearly having just run through the forest to catch up with them.

Alina read the last line twice. Then she lifted her eyes to the study door.Nobody stood in it now. Only Renee, a Salvatore guard behind her, and the dim corridor beyond."Who was in the nursery doorway?" she asked quietly.Renee frowned. "Nobody entered that passage except us. Daniel led, then you, Adrian, me.""Daniel says someone stood there." Alina turned the paper toward her. "While I was in labor. In this house."Adrian rocked the baby in his arm without taking his eyes off the page. "He could be wrong. He lost a lot of blood. He could be trying to buy something.""With what?" Dr. Carter said, not looking up from the second twin. "He has already given away everything he owns."The question settled over the room. Alina felt the old animal alertness return, the instinct she had learned in a locked bedroom, and she hated how quickly it came back."Helen," she said.Helen, still holding her hand, did not move. "Nyonya?""You were in the greenhouse with Junior. When you came back for

Nobody in the study spoke. The word hung in the red-tinged air like something fragile that might break if anyone breathed too hard. Alina lay across Daniel's old desk, her skirt soaked, her hair stuck to her temples, and stared at Dr. Carter."Twins," she repeated."I heard the second heartbeat three weeks ago," Dr. Carter said, snapping her gloves tight. "It was faint, overlapped by the first. I wanted a proper scan before telling you. I'm sorry it comes like this."A laugh escaped Alina, raw and cracked. "Of course. Of course it does."Adrian had not let go of her hand. His face was colorless, but his voice, when it came, was steady. "What do you need?""Clean cloths, hot water if the kitchen has any, and everyone out who is not essential." Dr. Carter glanced at the wall of armed men. "That includes the ones with guns."Renee gave a short nod. "Salvatore's men take Edmund and the guards outside. Two stay at the door. Nobody enters without my word."Edmund had said nothing since the

The second contraction came before the first had fully faded.Alina bent forward, one hand braced against the stone wall, the other clamped around Adrian's forearm. The pain was not like anything the books had described. It was a band of iron tightening around her middle, and for a few seconds the room narrowed to the sound of her own breath."Alina. Look at me." Adrian's face swam into focus, pale and fierce. "Breathe out. Slowly. Long."She breathed. The band loosened."How far apart?" Renee asked. She had not taken her eyes or her weapon off Edmund."Two minutes," Alina managed. "Maybe less.""That is impossible for a first labor of this kind," Edmund murmured, almost to himself. "Stress accelerates everything. I read once that it can.""Shut up," Adrian said, with a coldness Alina had never heard from him.Edmund only smiled and settled deeper into the rocking chair, his hand flat on the arm. The red light on the black box kept blinking. Each pulse lit his white hair a faint, sick

Alina did not move from the doorway.Edmund Blackwood watched her with the mild patience of a man who had all the time in the world. He was thinner than his portraits, his hair gone white, but the eyes were the same: pale, level, and faintly amused. Daniel stood beside the open safe with his back half turned, one hand pressed flat against the steel door as if it were the only thing holding him upright."You are supposed to be dead," Adrian said."Officially, Mr. Lawson, I am." Edmund inclined his head. "A yacht, a storm, a closed casket. It was a very tidy arrangement. Death is the most efficient way to leave a company you no longer wish to answer for.""Margaret told everyone she was a widow," Alina said."Margaret was a widow. She simply was not told the whole truth." He smiled thinly. "Some marriages survive on what is left unsaid."Daniel finally turned. His face was gray, his eyes red-rimmed. He looked at Alina, and she saw no calculation in it, only a raw, stripped exhaustion sh

"Who is standing beside him?" Alina asked. The line crackled. Helen's breathing came fast and shallow, and somewhere behind it Junior sighed in his sleep."I couldn't see the face," Helen whispered. "Only a shadow against the study window, and a cane. A man's cane, with a silver handle."Adrian went very still. "A cane.""You know who that is?" Renee asked."Not yet." He looked at Alina. "But I know who carried one in Daniel's father's old photographs."Nobody answered. Foster, held between two of Salvatore's men near the door, had gone pale for the first time that night."Stay hidden, Helen," Alina said. "Keep Junior warm. We are coming for you both.""Hurry, Nyonya. The greenhouse glass is thin. If anyone walks the east path, they will see the lantern.""Put it out.""Yes. Yes, I will."The call ended. Alina stood very still, one hand on her stomach, feeling the baby shift as if in answer to her pulse."We split," Renee said. "Two men take Foster and Harris to the car. The rest of u

Alina looked at the screen, at the pinned hair and the narrow back, and made herself breathe slowly. Twenty minutes. Foster had said it twice, and people who say a number twice are usually counting. "You're lying about the time," Alina said. "If you needed me here for twenty minutes, you wouldn't have wasted five of them talking." Foster's smile flickered. "I'm fond of conversation." "No. You're waiting for something." Alina kept her hands where they were, one resting on the curve of her stomach, which felt like the only honest gesture she had left. "A call. A confirmation. Someone has to tell you it's finished." For the first time, Foster did not answer at once. Behind her, Harris had slid down the stall wall until he sat in the straw, his knees drawn up. He was staring at the phone in Foster's hand with an expression Alina could not read. It looked less like fear than like arithmetic. "Mrs. Blackwood," he said hoarsely. "Be quiet, Harris," Foster said. "The woman on
