Victoria turned to Ryder in surprise.

“What? It’s just been going on for half an hour.” He had planned for the conference to last over an hour.

“Well, change of plans.” He mumbled through gritted teeth.

With every snide and underhanded question Victoria got asked, Ryder found himself teetering over to the edge. He had his self control built over years to thank for lasting this long without snapping at someone.

The man was the final straw. Who gave him the audacity to say something so out

Ryder sat at his desk working, but his eyes occasionally went to the clock.Sam noticed this and said, “Sir, you can focus. I turned on a reminder for you.”Ryder slowly looked up from the document in front of him, and glared at his assistant. Sam was standing several feet away, and awkwardly cleared his throat. “I only meant that you don’t need to keep checking the time.” He added carefully., aware of how grumpy Ryder was, these days. “The reminder will notify you.”“I know what a reminder does.” Ryder replied sharply.Sam nodded. “Of course.”Ryder returned his attention to the document. For approximately twenty seconds though. His eyes moved across the same paragraph without absorbing a single word before drifting towards the clock again.Sam noticed. He said nothing this time, but the look on his face made it obvious that he was not fooled.Ryder grunted looked at him again, “What?”“Nothing, sir ” Sam answered.“You have a very expressive face for someone who clai

Julie looked at her and Victoria looked back. Neither of them spoke.“You don’t care?” Julie asked, not at all buying into her bluff. “No.” Victoria remained adamant. “Right....”“Julie.” Victoria called her sternly, seeing the disbelieving expression on her face.Julie held her hands up in mock innocence. “It’s just, you seem a lot bothered for someone who claims to not care.”Victoria looked away and rubbed her thumb against the handle of her mug.She had already told Julie too much about it over the past week. She had complained about the strange behaviour, the awkward breakfasts, the sudden disappearances, and the way Ryder seemed to have developed an impressive ability to appear anywhere except wherever she happened to be.At first, she had told herself she was simply annoyed because his behaviour was inconvenient. But somewhere along the way, she had started wondering why he was doing it.Was he angry with her? Had she done something during their trip? Had he regrett

Just like he’d been doing, Ryder continued to avoid Victoria. Before, she had merely suspected it, but now she had total confirmation. In the mornings when she came downstairs for breakfast, despite hearing his footsteps moving around the penthouse only minutes before, he would suddenly leave. When she returned from EVANGELINE meetings and noticed the light beneath his office door, only for it to disappear the moment she reached the hallway. Most of the time, he suddenly found his phone fascinating whenever they happened to be in the same room. One morning, Victoria walked into the kitchen just as Ryder was pouring himself a cup of coffee. He looked up. And for a second, neither of them said anything.“Good morning.” Victoria said, forcing herself to sound normal.“Morning,” Ryder replied, his tone completely monotonous. Victoria reached for the chair, to take a seat and have breakfast. Then he abruptly picked up his coffee and walked out.She stared at the doorway. “Ser

“How was the party?”Miranda’s question stopped Victoria short, one foot already on the first step of the stairs. She turned around. Her grandmother was sitting in the living room, reading glasses on, cup of tea on the side table beside her. She had clearly been awake and waiting, even thought it was way past eleven o’clock. “You’re still up.” Victoria said.“Evidently.” Miranda patted the seat beside her. “Come.”Victoria kicked off her heels at the bottom of the stairs, picked them up, and walked over. She dropped onto the sofa beside her grandmother and let out a long breath. One that she didn’t know she’d been holding for hours. “So.” Miranda stared, throwing a curious look Victoria’s way. “The party?”“It was a gala.” Victoria corrected. “To announce the partnership between Mr. Blaze and Tecna.”“And the drama?”Victoria raised an eyebrow at her. “What drama?”“Victoria.” Miranda gave her the look. “You came through that door with stress written all over your face.

Sixteen Years Ago...“Mr. Ryder, the CEO requests for you in his office.”The butler stood outside the study with his hands folded neatly behind his back, his voice respectful but completely devoid of warmth.Ryder looked up from the stack of financial books spread across the library table. He had spent the better part of the afternoon studying by himself, since his father refused to give him any of the fancy tutors, that were teaching Rita the ins and outs of the company. He closed the book immediately. “I’ll be there.”The butler inclined his head and quietly disappeared down the hallway.Ryder arranged the books into a neat pile before rising from his chair. Most evenings, servants moved about preparing dinner while Rita filled the corridors with laughter as she entertained whichever friends she’d invited over. Today, however, the silence was almost unsettling. When the mansion was silent, it meant his father’s rage had just broken out, moments before. And it always took

Victoria said each word with enough venom to poison an entire army. Serena’s smirk collapsed and she glared at Victoria, walking even closer. “You should be careful with that mouth of yours.”“I’ve been told several times. And it never works out for the people who say it.” She reached into her clutch for her lipstick, uncapped it, and turned to the mirror. “Was there something you wanted? Or did you just come in here to introduce yourself, because we could have done that outside.”Serena stepped closer. “I came in here to give you advice. Woman to woman.”“I generally take advice from people I respect.” Victoria said, pressing her lips together in the mirror. “But go on.”Serena’s mouth pulled into a sneer. “You think you’re clever.”“Yes I do. I know you can’t relate.”Serena looked at her reflection in the mirror for a long moment, before she said.“Whatever you think you have with Ryder, it isn’t real. You know that. He knows that. And when he’s done using you for whatever
