FAZER LOGIN~Atlas~
I turned my neck to the side to ease the cramp.
But the tension in my shoulders stubbornly remained. I dropped my pen and removed my glasses before rubbing my burning eyes.
I was more than tired. I was darned exhausted.
It was evening already and almost everyone had left. For a brief moment, the thought of going home too crossed my mind, like it had done at least a hundred times since I got married to Eliza.
And just like before, I immediately discarded the idea before it could take root. Because I knew that going home would be the most dangerous thing I had ever done.
My house was the last place I could afford to be right now. Not when Eliza was there, in my house, in my bed.
I closed my eyes and heaved a breath as my mind drifted to the day we got married. The memory of her wide, scared eyes was burned into my brain as surely as the way her lips had parted when she said the words, ‘I do.’
Only after the registrar pronounced us as husband and wife did my heart settle into a more calm pace. All through the days from when she agreed to my proposal to that moment, I had been shit scared that she would change her mind.
Even though I knew she was definitely boxed into a corner after Daniel screwed her over, I still couldn’t shake the worry that something could go wrong.
Seeing my ring on her slender finger brought me an immense amount of deep satisfaction. But at the same time, it heightened the rabid hunger that coiled under my skin.
From the moment Eliza had reappeared on Daniel’s arm four years ago, it seemed like my attraction to her had reawakened with a vengeance. And it got worse each time I caught a glimpse of her.
Heck! Who was I kidding? It was always a presence in my blood, even when she was nowhere in sight.
Just a mere thought of her was enough to bring me to painful arousal in seconds, which was plain crazy and utterly stupid.
The woman had snatched my heart out of my chest and walked all over it without a single care, only to latch onto my nephew. And I still couldn’t get her out of my head.
Pathetic! The voice snarled. It was the same one that whispered this plan into my head and kept urging me to go ahead with it, even when it became obvious that Daniel was the absolute worst.
I had learned to ignore the voice most times, but now, it was different.
I had only lasted till the evening of the day Eliza and I got married before my mind was clouded with luscious thoughts of seeing her naked in my sheets.
Her whole body was hidden in the sensible white skirt and suit she had worn for our ceremony, but that had only fired up my longing for her.
When a strand of her hair had drifted across my skin when she turned to look at something, I knew I had to leave. Fast.
So I did. I ran off and left my new bride all alone in my house on the day of her second wedding. And I didn’t care one whit about it, or so I tried to convince myself.
Blowing out a sharp huff, I opened my eyes, returned my glasses to the bridge of my nose, and straightened to get back to work. This was the only sane thing in my life right now. I couldn’t let myself be distracted. Not now, when I was this close to the end.
I shook my head and focused on the glowing laptop screen. But the words jumbled and danced before my eyes, which meant it was time to take a break.
Pushing back from the desk, I got up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window of my office that overlooked the bustling city below without being a part of it. As I watched people rush by, I felt like I was a part of the buzz while being outside it at the same time.
These conflicting parts were just like the turmoil inside my head. On one hand, I wanted to take my full revenge on Eliza and make her feel exactly what she did to me. But on the other hand, I could feel myself wavering.
Maybe the change had even started from the day Daniel proudly announced her as his fiancée. I saw the pride and joy on his face, but on hers, I could only see a dread that she kept carefully hidden.
I was starting to wonder whether that expression was actually what prompted me to do this and not a thirst for vengeance.
My gaze shifted to my reflection in the mirror and I didn’t like what I saw there. Instead of steely resolve in my eyes, I saw something else. It was soft and gentle. And fucking weak!
I scowled and turned away, thrusting my hands into my pockets, my movements jerky and angry. I was doing it again, letting Eliza get into my head, where she definitely didn’t belong.
That was a mistake the first time, but allowing it to happen this time would be utter stupidity on my part.
I felt the wall that had started to crumble in my heart go back up, this time, stronger than before.
I stalked back to my desk to pick up my phone. Unlocking it, I scrolled down to an unsaved number and dialed.
“Hello, boss,” Tony answered immediately.
I turned back to the window and leaned against my chair. “You can start,” I ordered in a hard voice.
“Sir?” Tony asked in a cautious voice that set my teeth on edge. “Right now?”
“You heard me, Tony,” I said and hung up.
I tossed the phone back to the desk and leveled a calm stare back at my image. Tilting my head slightly, I tried to determine if the look in the eyes of the man staring back at me was that of revenge or reproach.
Without waiting for an answer, I got up slowly and returned to my seat with deliberate calm. It didn’t matter whether my heart was urging me in another direction.
I already set things in motion and from now on, whatever happens…well, happened.
Setting my teeth and banishing all hints of warmth from my mind, I loosened my tie and settled in for another long night. Still, I couldn’t stop a stray thought from flashing into my head.
What was Eliza doing now?
~Eliza~Something had changed.Atlas returned four days ago. I had been happy, of course, but it quickly became apparent that he was different.I mean, sure, after he shaved and showered, he was still the handsome man I knew and loved. He had spent hours just with his head pressed against my belly. There was no way he could hear a heartbeat yet, but I understood him. All the while, he had thought he wouldn’t live to see his child. And now that he was rescued, he wanted to cherish every moment. But something just felt odd about him. I couldn’t shake the niggling feeling that the Atlas who returned to me was not the same man who was taken.I tried not to show my concern, though. He needed time to get over his ordeal and I was willing to give him that. It was the least I could do.The only problem was that he refused to meet my gaze for longer than a few seconds. Aside from the first moment when I opened my door and he smiled at me, he avoided my eyes.He also flat out refused to talk ab
~Eliza~Adam and Luca looked at me as if they were waiting for me to answer Peter. But how could I? What could I possibly say? That Jane claimed to be his daughter?Yeah, I didn’t think that was a conversation I was qualified to dive into.So I widened my eyes back at the two men and shrugged slightly. Peter caught my movement and shifted to look at me with furrowed brows.Just as I opened my mouth to say whatever, Jane spoke up. “You and I, we have to talk.”Her tone wasn’t harsh, but it was clear that that discussion would not be a pleasant one. Peter glanced back at her, his brows drawing into an even deeper V.“About what exactly?” he asked, his tone giving nothing away about what he was thinking.Jane cleared her throat and shifted. For the first time, she looked uneasy. Her eyes moved to Adam, Luca and me, before she sighed.“We can do that after Mr West.. Atlas, returns,” she said firmly. “If you don’t mind,” she added belatedly.I blinked, surprised to see a reddish tint on he
~Eliza~It was already well past midnight. And here I was, pacing back and forth in the second bedroom Luca had let me stay in. I had excused myself and retreated to this room, but my mind was unsettled.Even after finally knowing where Atlas was, I couldn’t sleep. How could I? When I just found out that my own father was holding my husband hostage. Okay, pause. That wasn’t exactly true. All Jane had said was that he was in my father’s house. She hadn’t actually said my father knew—A sob burst from me. I quickly clamped a hand over my mouth to muffle the sound.I didn’t want to think about it. I desperately wished not to believe that he would do such a thing to me.Even after coming to terms with the grim reality that he just didn’t care about me that much, this was a harder pill to swallow. That my father had actually helped Laura conceal my husband in his house. No, that can’t be right. I thought, shaking my head.I dropped my hand and stared out the window. It just didn’t make any
~Atlas~Even though I already suspected that Laura had someone working with her.Not counting her henchmen, of course. Aside from Jane, Felix, and everyone else she had blackmailed, there had always been a niggling thought that she wasn’t working alone.Still, I couldn’t have predicted that her accomplice would be Eliza’s stepsister. Isabella.I had only seen a flash of her face when she slipped into the room before it was plunged back into darkness. But I knew she was the one. After confronting her six years ago, when she set me up in my room, I could describe every single one of her features.Maybe that was also because I hated her with every fiber of my being. She had been the reason Eliza and I wasted so many years apart. It was all I could do not to hurt her for what she did to us. For Eliza’s sake, I have held back from ruining her life completely. But all bets were off now that I knew she was in cahoots with Laura. With everything my sister had done to make my life harder, anyo
~Atlas~They moved me.I have no idea where I am, but my location certainly changed after Laura’s deranged announcement of her plan to lure Eliza back into captivity using Jane. When her words pierced through the haze of panic that had initially swamped me, I had gone berserk.I threw myself forward, trying to get to her even though my body still ached like hell. All I could think about was keeping Eliza and our baby away from my sister. But before I could even touch Laura, the two henchmen were on me. They wrenched me backward and threw me back against the wall so hard that my eyes crossed in their sockets.Bile rose in my throat as I groaned, struggling back to my feet. Laura stood only a few feet away, her lips tipped up in a huge sneer. She tutted, shaking her head. “You just don’t learn, do you?”I swayed on my feet, clutching my aching side and trying not to lose consciousness. Through clenched teeth, I gritted out, “D-don’t you d-dare t-t-touch—”“Oh, I will do more than touch
~Eliza~Exhaustion must have taken over. The next time I opened my eyes, it was dark outside.Damn! How long had I been asleep?I sat up, rubbing my eyes as I pushed aside the covering Luca had placed over me.Where was he, though? I wondered, yawning quietly and stretching my cramped body.I looked around the quiet room lit by the soft glow of a few lamps. “Luca?” I called, getting up.Silence answered, my voice echoing a little. It was loud and worrying. Neither Jane nor Adam were here either. Were they still not done with the check?I swallowed hard, fighting to remain steady as irrational panic swept through me. I tried to think of reasons why Luca wasn’t in the room.Maybe he had stepped outside briefly to get something. He could be in his bedroom. Or he was taking a shower and couldn’t hear me.But the house was too small for the other two options. I would guess no more than two bedrooms, so if he was in here, he should have heard me.I walked towards the hallway just off the si
~Atlas~After six long years, she was finally back in my life. Eliza Monroe.I was close enough to touch her, but now, she was unconscious on a hospital bed. And my nephew put her there. My hands curled into fists at my sides and I hated the feeling of helplessness curling through me.“What the hel
~Eliza~“I didn't realize you found the idea of marrying me so distasteful, Eliza,” Atlas bit out, his gaze sharpening on me.“Well, for one, you are Daniel’s uncle,” I stated, widening my eyes at him incredulously. “What—”“Step uncle.”“will everyone think?” I finished determinedly.“Why do you c
~Eliza~Tingles spread from my head to my toes.I kept my eyes closed for a moment longer, trying to keep reality from rushing back in, but it was useless. Slowly, I opened my eyes. The ceiling above me was high and cream-coloured, with a pale light fixture at its centre. I turned my head and notic
~Eliza~“B-baby, what are you doing here?” Daniel asked breathlessly as he scrambled to pull up his trousers. The smile died on my trembling lips as I watched my sister slowly pull down her skintight skirt. She smirked at me.I had just entered Daniel’s office to share the most wonderful news, only
