Chapter Two
Three weeks later
“It's positive” my hands shook as I stared at my best friend with tears filled eyes.
“Oh baby…” Tiffany, my bff, stood up quickly, her arms quickly engulfing me in a warm hug.
“What do I do?” I sobbed into her top.
“Don't cry, it's not your fault. You didn't know it would happen”, she tried to reassure me. “Come here” she dragged me to my bed, sitting me down.
“What's your plan now?” Tiffany asked, her gaze soft on mine.
“I don't know. I can't keep a baby. I can't even fend for myself”
“I know, Maya. But you should know I'm here to support you. I'm here for you, girl. You don't have to get rid of it”
“It's not just about the money. I don't know if I can mother a child. I never grew up with one, you know that” I said, sniffing in the process.
“I know, baby. Look, you're the most amazing person in the world. You're kind, caring, strong and selfless, and I'm sure taking care of a child would never be a struggle for you. And if eventually things start to seem a bit hard, you have me. I mean, I don't think there's any mother out there that doesn't face any struggle bringing up a child” she said.
“I'm not sure about this, Tee. But thank you. That means a lot”, I told her.
“You don't have to decide now. You still have time” she smiled as she rubbed my shoulder soothingly.
“Yeah” I smiled back, the load of the child in my belly now lighter.
“Maya… what about the father?” Tiffany finally asked. I had been hoping she wouldn't ask me about it. It's not like I wanted to keep anything from her, I just didn't know what to tell her. All I knew about him was his name. It was just a one-night stand, there wasn't any need for me to go all FBI on him.
“What do you mean?” I asked, acting like I didn't know what she was talking about.
Ever since that night, I couldn't get him out of my mind. I had even gone to the club several times hoping I would be lucky to see him, but I wasn't that lucky. Elijah roamed my mind, day and night. His touch, his kisses were a constant reminder of how good he had made me felt that night. I cursed myself every second for running away that morning. My insecurity made me do it.
“Don't play dumb with me, girl. What do you know about father?” She scowled.
I bowed my head in shame, “I don't know anything about him. It was a one-night stand, remember”, I scoffed.
“Oh…the one-night stand guy? Did you meet up with him again?” she asked, one of her brows raised.
“No. I haven't slept with any other guy since that night.”
“So you don't even know where he stays or works?”
“I only know his name. We didn't really get to talk that night”. I shook my head, mad at myself for making such a mistake. How did I forget to remind him to use protection? How could he be so dumb too?!
“Was he that fine, uhn?” Tiffany teased, her lips slightly curved into a smirk.
“Shut up!” My cheeks quickly flamed red. “I just didn't want him to think anything about what we were doing.”
“Now look at what your non-chalant self got you into” she mumbled quietly, hoping I wouldn't hear, but I clearly did. I threw her a dirty look before sighing. She was right. This was all my fault. I should have at least made some sort of inquiry about him before spreading my legs wide open like a f*c*ing wh*re.
“I'm so f*c*ing stupid, Tee” I groaned into my hands, the tears threatening to flood again.
“Yes, you are, but it's okay. We have a lead now”. She stood up and walked towards my work table before grabbing my MacBook.
She plopped herself back on my bed before opening the computer.
“What are you do-"I started to say, but she quickly interrupted me.
“What's his name girl?” She asked before opening I*******m.
“Elijah Ryker” I said. She gave me a look before typing it on the computer.
“You knew his full name all along, and you stood there crying like a fuc**ng hyena?” She asked incredulously.
“Shut up, Tee. Show me some pity”. I couldn't help the laugh that stumbled out of my mouth. One of the many reasons I loved Tiffany.
She continued to search for him. She showed me a couple of pictures of people who had the same name, but I kept telling her they weren't the ones. At some point, she got tired, and I also got fed up.
“Is he an illegal immigrant?” she suggested. I shook my head, not believing that. Elijah didn't look like an illegal immigrant.
In fact, he looked the opposite. He looked wealthy and powerful, like someone who commanded respect at every turn.
“I'm not sure, Tee” I responded. I continued to stare at the computer as she scrolled on the different guys. Just as she was about to close the tab, my eyes saw him.
Elijah. He wore a dark suit like the last time I saw him.
“Stop!” I shouted.
“What?” She shrieked, clearly surprised at my sudden outburst.
“That's him!” I pointed at him on the screen.
“It says Elijah Tyler here, Maya”. She looked at me like I was dumb.
“Yeah, Elijah Ryker is clearly a mistake. That's him, I'm a hundred percent sure.”
“You lucky fool, you weren't lying. He's damn fine…and rich”
“He's the CEO of Tyler's electronics?” I gasped.
“You need to meet him” my friend said.
“What if he rejects me? What if he doesn't want this child? F*ck, I am not even sure I want this child myself”. I started to hyperventilate. Tiffany gave me a knock on my head, bringing me back to my senses.
“You're going to walk in there and demand his attention. Yes, you guys made a mistake by not using any protection, but the deed is done. You're one of the most beautiful ladies out there. If he rejects you, it will only prove how stupid he is” Tiffany gave me a push.
I looked at her, wondering what my fate was about to turn to? I was scared of my future, I was scared of the baby inside me…but what scared me most was the fact I was already imagining a life with Elijah. The thought sent sweet thrills to my spine.
I stood up from the bed, my back hurting from crouching all along. Just then, my phone went off with a new notification.
'Suprise! We found you, Astrid Grey', the text read. The phone fell out of my hand, crashing hard on the floor.
Elijah's pov“Elijah, there's something you really need to see.” I hear Vikram speak into the phone, his voice tinged with a slight annoyance. My jaw twitch, wondering what next he had found about Maya.Vikram is my personal investigator who had showed me that Maya was the woman who had killed my mother three years ago, and ran away like nothing happened.I didn't just take his words for it. Her innocent face, they didn't look like someone's that would pull a trigger in someone's head, much less someone they had worked for, for over five years. And so I ordered Vikram to redo his investigation again and again, and to find more proof. And at the end of the day, all evidence pointed to her. She didn't just kill my mother, Maya stole her assets, ran away, thinking no one was watching her.I vowed to myself to make her pay for everything she did to my mum. “Come to the office,” I responded back into the phone, my voice gruff around its edges.Lizzy Volkov, was my biological mother, and t
"Why do you keep staring at me that way? You think I'll confess to a crime I didn't commit if you stare hard enough?” I asked coldly, my body launched lazily on the sofa, eyes distant. My voice feels too sore like I haven't talked for the part three months, and that's not a complete exaggeration. I've been literally mute for the past two weeks since Elijah brought me back home from the hospital.I could feel my life slipping away day by day, there was no essence for living anymore, and I hated how a night of pasion made me into this. I should have known better…trusting a man.Elijah stares at me, his expression unreadable. Gray eyes like steel with an intensity locked on me, too attentive, like he was trying to read what was running through my head. “You haven't touched your food.” He pushed the plate of pasta to me, but I turn my head away from it.“Talk to me, Maya.”That one word from his lips feels like a slap. It used to send thrills down my back, but now it only opened old wound
Light sears into my eyes, a jagged blade cutting through the dark. I’m nowhere, just a void, my body is a lead weight, and my limbs like stone. A beep stabs the silence, rhythmic, close, dragging me up from nothing. Something pinches my arm, sharp, tugging. My throat’s is suddenly ash, my head a fog of half-formed shadows. Where am I?, I ask myself. The air’s wrong—sharp, cold, like metal and bleach. A hum buzzes, low, under the beep, and I blink, slow, the world a smear of white and gray.“Mrs. Tyler?” A voice, brisk, female, slices through. “Can you hear me?” I try to focus, but my eyes are heavy, the shape of her blurring—a woman, white coat, clipboard clicking. My name—Tyler—lands like a stone, familiar but distant, like it’s someone else’s. I can’t speak, my tongue a dead thing, so I just stare, my chest tight with something I can’t name.Water…“You’re in the hospital,” she says, nurse, her face sharpening, too bright for this cold place. “You’ve been in coma, a few days. You’re
Chapter 18Rain splattered Elijah’s truck, his bare chest heaving, sweat stinging his eyes. His phone pinged, a new text: Maya’s off life support. Your signature. Done. No fucking way he’d signed that. The call’s venom—“You didn’t deserve her”—looped, a taunt he couldn’t completely shake. Maya, his wife, had to be alive. He gunned the engine, city lights blurring past him.Her face clawed at him—those beautiful hazel eyes, wild when he’d locked her in with his mother’s comatose body, monitors droning out loud noises. Lizzy’s aide, Maya had sworn she’d only heard the shot, bolted in panic. Elijah, overseas then, didn’t buy it. Her tears screamed she was guilty. He’d married her to chain her, make her bleed for her sins. When she’d doubled over, pregnant with his kid, begging for help, he’d stood there, hating her, punishing her Too late to the hospital. Mother or child, they’d requested. He’d chosen Maya—not mercy, but justice. She hadn’t paid enough.fie her crimes.Ahead, red and blue
The VIP room was a shithole- it looked liked it had been used too many times by scumbags and dirty whores. But it would be enough for this night. He just needed to let off some steam. The door slammed shut as he pushed Tasha _or whatever she had called her name to be, against the door. A moan escaped from her lip as his lips found her sensitive bud underneath her flimsy clothing.“F*ck…please don't stop,” she moaned out. Trisha grabbed his head, smashing her lips against his, as his hands found the waist band of her panties. Already soaked with her juices. She clawed at his shirt, shredding it off him like a starving animal hungry for its prey. Her dress was a scrap of cheap red silk, unlike his expensive own. It was too tight, so he yanked it up, baring her half naked body to him. His hands grabbed her tits, pressing her harder to the door. “You want this, don't you?” He growled as his hands continued to rub on her nipples, eliciting a soft moan from her. She nodded, unable to spit
Maya's POVDarkness. The world around me was filled with thick darkness. It was heavy…the kind that would sink deep into your bones and then snatch your soul.Just as I was beginning to feel dizzy, a bright light shined brightly, almost blinding me.I didn't remember how I got there, but I knew immediately, I wanted to leave. Not until I saw a familiar face.“Mum,” I called out. My mum smiled at me as she drew near.“Maya, you're finally here,” she said immediately she came closer, engulfing me into a warm hug. Then I released myself from her embrace.“Where's this, mum? Why-why are you here…you're dead.” As soon as the words left my mouth, reality struck me hard in the face.If my mum was here with me, it only meant one thing.I am not a living being anymore.“Maya, you shouldn't be here. Go back home,” my mum said as she looked at me softly. Home?I realized that as I stood in this space, there was no pain, no betrayal…no Elijah.I wanted to stay here, in this place where there wa
*Beep beep beep* The heart monitor ringed erratically.“Maya! Stay with us now!” The doctor's sharp voice cut through the thick tension.Elijah stood frozen in the background.“She's going into shock, get the defibrillator ready now!” Elijah watched everything unfold. The way Maya's body convulsed violently on the bed. The way the nurses tried to hold her back down as the doctor tried to prepare the defibrillator machine.A strange sound left his throat as he watched her thrash around before the doctor finally pressed the machine on her chest.Suddenly, a nurse pushed on his chest, attempting to push him out. “You need to get out!”But he didn't bulge. His eyes remained frozen on the woman who laid that now laid lifelessly on the bed.“We're losing her. Clear!” Maya's body arched off the bed before throwing back on the bed again, limply. His hands trembled at his side as his breath cane out ragged. The last word he said to her began to ring in his ears—- Your life is a waste to me.

(third persons Pov)“You can't choose both. If you do, they both die,” the doctor exhaled heavily, fatigue written all over his face. “You have to save only one.”“You're supposed to be the best doctor in town!” Elijah growled at him. The doctor quickly moved back, scared the furious man in front of him might attack him.“There's nothing I can do. The drug had done too much irreversible damage before she was brought in. It's only a miracle that she's still breathing,” the doctor quickly said. “You came in almost too late.”The words hung in the air like a rope tied around his neck. ‘Too late’. He had been too late. She had been crying for his help, begging him to come save her, but he locked her voice away from his reach. His anger had pushed him to destroy almost two lives. What difference was he from her-the woman who had left his mother to die like a fowl, on the floor? He couldn't even protect his unborn child. His child__the one he had never really spared a thought to. He hadn't
