Lena could now see why Dante kept saying "we" when he was the only one who came into the house. He had her cramped between himself and another man who hadn't glanced at her when she got into the car.
'What was inside the briefcase that needed so many men to come get?' Lena thought. But that was the least of her problems. It was pitch black outside, and they'd been driving for what seemed like an hour. She'd have been certain of the time if she had a phone or wristwatch, but all she had was the fading top and pants she wore, as Dante hadn't given her a chance to take anything from the house. He told her it was Thane's orders. "Bulldoze the house and build something else on it," she'd heard Thane instruct when he was done speaking to her. "Bring her straight here before getting the package to where it should be." After that, he'd said something she hadn't paid attention to. But Lena didn't mind, she was finally out of that place. With zero expectations, she stared straight ahead as the car sped along the tarred road, not daring to look to her right where Dante sat or her left, where she felt the other man steal occasional distrustful glances at her. She wouldn't blame him, though. Who in their right senses would plead to follow strange men to a location they were uncertain of? It seemed the activity in her head was a good distraction as soon enough; she felt the car slow down in front of a gate which was too dark to see at night, but she could tell its height. Just as the car came to a halt before the slowly unfolding gate, Dante and the other man alighted, leaving a confused Lena, the driver, and the other man sitting at the shotgun. "Take her in." Dante ordered and walked towards another car waiting outside. Lena's body unconsciously stiffened as soon as the car began slowly entering the compound. And when the gate closed behind them, she realised that she might have begged the devil. For some reason, the only place with light was the main house and through the light, she could make out its size. For as long as she could remember, she'd never seen anything like it. Slowly, accompanied by the man from the shotgun of the car, she walked through the door of the house and her breath seemed to seize immediately. Adrian, her ex-husband, was an extremely rich man and his house contained about fifteen bedrooms. But what Lena's eyes stared at was no fifteen bedroom building. What her eyes were taking in was the kind of house king Solomon and his first hundred wives would have lived in; if her exaggeration wasn't so much. It was beautiful, large and the interior decorations screamed luxury and money. All that came to Lena's mind was 'How the fuck was the man who owned this place in her kind of jail?' "You must be Lena." The voice of a lady interrupted her thoughts, and she brought her gaze down to view a middle-aged woman dressed in an ash gown which almost hung loose on her body but painted a great picture of her age, and also someone who was well taken care of. Lena's eyes locked into the woman's and she nodded "Yes, ma'am." "Very well then, come with me." She had the voice of a typical elderly woman. Not harsh and not too jovial, but pyhad a commanding tone to it. Lena, still wallowing in her astonishment, followed the woman up the stairs and as they were about to turn a corner, a lady brushed past Lena, hitting her on the shoulder in the process. "I'm so sorry." Lena apologised quickly and was about to say something when the lady's eyes locked onto hers. Lena didn't know why, but something about the lady's honey eyes sent shivers down her spine, making her swallow her words and just watch the lady leave without a word. "It's alright, that's Bridget, she's kind of Mr Moneau's favourite," the woman explained without looking back as they continued down a hall of rooms. "Is she alright?" Lena asked, genuinely concerned, as she was still a little shaken by what she'd felt. "Oh yes. She's usually just sour around newbies, but you'd like her once you get used to her." 'Newbies?' Lena thought, ignoring the rest of what the woman had said just as they stopped in front of a door and the woman knocked on it twice. The door swung open immediately, revealing a blonde standing at it. "This is your room, Lena." the woman informed, ignoring the blonde who had a brow raised, eyeing Lena with curiosity. "According to Mr Moneau, you'd resume work as his maid." "She doesn't look like maid material to me, Marie." The blonde mocked and rested on one foot with her arms folded. Marie just ignored her and turned to Lena, giving her a warm smile. "Not just any maid, dear. You'll be Mr Moneau's personal maid. So you'll take care of his personal space." She said in a giddy tone, which got Lena confused, but she nodded anyway. "Now, Alexandra." Marie turned to the blonde. "Treat her nicely or you'll have me to contend with." She warned and patted Lena on the shoulder, then began walking away. Alexandra stared at Lena and flashed her a wry grin. "We're going to be such besties." Using her leg, she kicked the door wider for Lena to come in. ***** In no time, Lena dressed herself in the maids' outfit, a straight light blue gown that stopped just above the knee and had a zipper at the back. She made her way to where they'd described as Thane and his fiance, Tessa's room, where she was told to go clean up the mess in the room. She couldn't help but feel honored that she'd be in the presence of Tessa Maddox, supermodel and six times influencer of the year. Tessa was one woman Lena admired and wished to be like; pretty, happy and fulfilled. She reached the large door, took out the keys that were given to her, and unlocked the door. Even though Lena was caught breathless by the decor, beauty, and size of the room, she couldn't help but notice the broken wine bottle and the red liquid that had spilled all over the white tiles. 'Who drinks at this odd hour of the day?' she thought. Without wasting much time, she set down her equipment and got to work. But in the middle of it, she heard the door slam behind her. "And who are you supposed to be?" Lena turned around at the sound of the irritated female voice, to view a pale, swollen-eyed, scattered haired Tessa who looked nothing like the person she usually saw on TV."The plan was to get the code. Not kill her child." Darius said through gritted teeth, his sharp eyes narrowed sternly at Cecil.Cecil turned away, pretending to have her attention on the occupants of the other tables, her glass of beer playing at her lips. This was the umpteenth time in just two days she was getting scolded like a child and she was getting even more frustrated each time."In the end, what did you gain from it?" Darius snapped. "Nothing Cecil! Once again, to let your ambition get the better of you!"Cecil suddenly slammed the glass onto the table with a loud bang. "Oh, stop it!" She yelled, drawing the attention of a few customers. She frowned, staring Darius straight in the eyes. "Stop making it sound like I pushed her down the damn stairs. She was struggling, and she lost her balance when I let her go.""And don't you lecture on my ambition because if anyone was going to benefit from it, it was you, Darius!" She spat. "Stop making me explain myself over and over li
Lena's head shifted slowly from side to side, soft, pained moans slipping from her lips.Thane rushed over to the bed and gently took her hand, looking at her face. "Lena," he called, his voice tight with worry, hoping she'd answer and finally open her eyes. But Lena's eyelids felt impossibly heavy, like they were being held down by bricks. The more her eyeballs moved within, searching for light, the more pain she felt. "Lena." Thane called again, his voice laced with concern. He'd never seen her this weak before and this state just made her look even smaller than she originally was. It was unbearable. The doctor stepped closer. "I think you should let her respond in her own time." He said softly.Lena inhaled deeply, then slowly, she raised her free hand, which Thane wasn't holding to her head. Her entire body burned, and she felt too weak to even open her mouth or her eyes."Lena." Thane called again. This time, Lena followed his voice and turned towards it even though her eyes
The entire world seemed to spin violently as Lena tumbled down the stairs. All she could hear was the sound of her own body bouncing on each step as she painfully and helplessly made her way down the stairs. Finally, her face hit the ground and all the strength left in her body evaporated with the wind, leaving her very lightweight. For a second, the entire room stood still with everyone holding their breath as if waiting for a confirmation that she was still aliveBut Lena just laid there, unable to move."Lena." Thane finally called, snapping out of the shock as he shoved the gun into Dante's hand and rushed towards her.He squatted and reached for her, pulling her into a sitting position while he placed her head on his chest.Pain shot through her entire body and settled in her stomach. She winced."Are you okay?" Thane asked, a deep frown on his face as she held her close. He took her hand in his. "Call an ambulance." He said to Dante, who immediately pulled out his phone.Lena
"Are you sure you had it on you?" Cecil asked as she slowly paced round the room, her arms folded. For the past few minutes, everyone maintained their place, thinking about what Lena had just said.If the necklace really had the code on it, then they were as good as cooked because it was uncertain whose hands it had fallen into.Lena's mind, on the other hand, was a mess. The feeling that she'd lost the closest thing she could use to represent her mother overshadowed the hurt from the betrayal she was feeling all over again from everyone she trusted. She sat on the edge of the bed with no tears left to cry, searching her mind for how and where the necklace had gone missing.Nothing.'I never take it off.' she reminded herself. But she wasn't sure when it had gone missing because she never actually found any reason to double check if it was still around her neck. There could be only two possibilities as to the reason why it was gone-It had fallen off her neck when she was bundled into
Lena clutched her aching neck, her hair a tangled mess as a throbbing headache set in. Her heart pounded in her chest the longer it took for the newcomer to climb up the stairs. She sat curled up on the bed as Cecil shot her that creepy, victorious smile with her arms folded. It wasn't the same for Chad though, as there was something else on his face-regret? Fear? Pity?Lena couldn't place it. All she knew was whoever was climbing up those stairs sounded like bad news."Glad you could join us," Cecil greeted as the person closed in."Who made such a mess?" The man asked with obvious irritation as Cecil took an annoyed glance at Chad.Lena's heart sank just as she heard it shatter all over again."Where is she?" the man finally asked, and Chad kicked open the door wider.Lena's eyes widened as she met the man's gaze-not from surprise, but from realization.Adrian.Her vision blurred slightly as she blinked, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. Adrian took slow, steady steps to
It felt like his eyelids were being pressed down by heavy, unseen forces as they felt so heavy up open. But finally, with so much effort, he saw faint light, and even the faint light made him wince. 'Fuck!' he thought as a sharp pain tore through his body, forcing him to shut his eyes again. 'Don't be such a pussy. It's just a little pain,' his mind scolded as the motion he was feeling suddenly stopped. His eyes shot open again, and he was staring at the gray ceiling of his car.'Now where were we?... Lena.' Thane hurriedly sat up, holding his head as it throbbed painfully."You're up." Dante's voice came from the front seat, staring at him through the rearview mirror.Thane kept his head straight, his eyes on the empty road. "Where are we?" He asked carefully, so he didn't make too much face movement.Dante's eyes dropped to the device on his laps. "You were out cold. If you care to know." He informed, tapping away on the screen.Thane's fingers moved to his neck. His body tempera
"Call me whenever." Adrian's voice echoed in Lena's head. She swallowed hard, blinking multiple times as her mind raced.'You didn't call him when Mira, your stepsister, gave birth.''She's not her stepsister.' 'Doesn't matter!' the voice argued back. 'He'd given you his number to call him and you never did when you should have. And now you're stuck in here like Rapunzel and you want him to come save you? That's selfish, fool.'Lena's heartbeat sped up, matching the ticking clock in her head. Her fingers shook.Adrian was her only hope right now, because no other number was stored in her memory.'He did say I could call him if I needed someone, right?' she thought, biting her lower lip.Fuck it!She hurriedly rehearsed the numbers the way she'd read it on the card, then typed it on the phone and hit dial."I found the keys, Lena! I'm going to fucking tie you up. Let's see how much you can run your fucking-shit!!" Chad suddenly yelled along with painful groaning. The phone was ringing
Lena frantically searched her body for her phone, her hands running over her clothes, but it was gone. They'd obviously taken it out. "No, no, no," Lena muttered as tears dropped from her eyes, the fact that she was doomed dawning on her.She sank onto the bed, staring at the door and thinking of how her situation could get worse. This was everything Thane had tried to prevent, but she'd foolishly walked right out of his protection. 'Idiot!'Suddenly she paused, a sudden rush of strength coursing through her.She rushed to the door and began pounding on it. "Who is out there? Let me out!" She yelled and banged with all the strength in her, the sound bouncing on the walls and echoing around the small room."Cecil!" she yelled, accompanied by more banging and rattling of the doorknob, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Let me out of here!" She could feel her strength leaving her with each word.Cecil had clearly sedated her, then drove her to this building to lock her up.'What does she
A frown formed on Lena's face first, then shifted slightly before she finally forced her eyes open, a gasp escaping her lips. She sat up on the bed immediately, but she suddenly felt dizzy and shut her eyes again, her hand moving up to them to rub the fog out."What happened?" She muttered to herself and leaned backwards, aiming to place her head on the bed's headrest. But her head met a hard surface. Her eyes shut open immediately, the fog suddenly clearing. "What?" She turned around, confusion turning into alarm. There was no headrest-just a cold, hard wall behind her.Her eyes darted back to the room to take in her surroundings.A wardrobe. Two doors. A small table with a tray holding a glass of water. Thick curtains covering one side of the room.It was a room alright, but... "This isn't Thane's room." She said out loud, panic setting in her chest.Instinctively, she got out of the bed, slipping into her footwear, which lay scattered on the ground beside the bed. With her heart s
