The entire hall seemed to be thrown into silence and the sound of the tumbling Lena filled the building till she landed on the floor with her back.
"Ouch!" She muttered and shut her eyes in pain as she felt like she'd severed her spinal cord. The pain spread really quickly, and she began to feel it even on her shoulders, but soon, her eyes shot open. 'The briefing!' With so much effort, she scrambled to her feet and met the eyes of Tessa and the much older woman whom Tessa was speaking to. "What the fuck are you doing?" Tessa's face was beet red in anger as she stared at Lena's pathetic figure trying to steady herself and suck in the pain. "Good. This is exactly what we need." The other woman's voice dripped with sarcasm, but Lena didn't dare look her in the eye. "I'm so sorry, ma'am." Lena apologized, suppressing a wince from the pain in her shoulders. The other woman turned to the other guests and assured them that everything was fine with a forced smile, then turned back to Lena with irritation. When they were sure everyone had gone back to their business, Tessa took a step towards Lena with blazing eyes. "What are you trying to do? Are you trying to ruin this thing for me?" Lena's eye stung with tears, but she kept her head down. Tessa didn't even care if she was hurt. "Of course not. I'll never do that." She replied with quivering lips. "Then what would you-" "That's alright now Tessa." The woman stopped Tessa eyeing Lena as she gently pulled Tessa to her side. "But Cecil she-" "No need to be worked up over some clumsy maid. Today marks the true beginning of your life with my son." 'Her son?' Lena slowly raised her eyes and took a quick glance at the woman. She bore a striking resemblance to Thane. Her hair was dark, shiny and just the right length for a woman her age. Her brows were icily arched; similar to that of a wicked stepmother, and her eyes had a darker glow than Thane's. Or was it the lighting in the room? Lena wasn't sure. "Also, you have a speech to give. Don't overwork your voice, my dear." Cecil added, and Tessa couldn't help but take a deep breath and smile. "You're right Cecil. I won't let her ruin my day. She'll leave soon, anyway." Tessa replied with a smirk of pride. Lena's heart sank along with all the admiration she had for Tessa and a sudden feeling of anger washed over her. She raised her dampened eyes to be sure Tessa was joking, instead she sighted Marie coming their way. "What happened, Lena?" Marie called and gently held her by the arm, then turned to Tessa and Cecil. "I am so sorry about that, Mrs. Moneau. I promise it won't happen again." "Oh, no worries." Cecil said as she waved her rings adorned hand dismissively. "Just get her in check for the rest of the time she has left. We don't want careless maids spilling drinks over our prominent guests." She added and began walking away with Tessa. "Now, about our initial discussion." Lena heard Cecil as they walked away. "Your career doesn't stop from carrying my son's child, you know..." "What is wrong with you?" Marie scolded, snapping Lena out of her eavesdropping. "Do you want to get yourself fired?" She asked with the scariest scowl Lena had ever seen and it moved her half to tears. "You're such a promising young lady and you got everything so right when you first arrived. What went wrong?" Though Lena knew Marie was scolding her, she couldn't help but feel the motherly love hovering around her words, and it made Lena wonder if she had a child. "I am so sorry. I was in such a hurry and I tripped-" "No, stop that." Marie interrupted. "You should know by now that no one in this household tolerates excuses. Especially during these important times." Marie suddenly looked around as if searching for someone. "Thane has you under surveillance, you know." She said in a whisper. "Another wrong move and you're gone!" 'Really? That's how petty he is?' Lena thought and almost rolled her eyeballs. 'He is so damn selfish.' "I don't know what you did to him, but you need to be extra careful, especially now that Cecil will be around most of the time." Marie added and began leading Lena towards the kitchen while flashing smiles at anyone they passed by. Lena didn't know how everything had come to this, but she knew she didn't want to lose this job. She needed it! ***** "Do we really have to wait for him? What if he doesn't show up?" Lena saw Tessa whisper to Cecil with a frown. They were all seated around a large dining table which contained only empty plates and a glass of wine in front of each person. Every seat at the table was occupied except for two in front of Lena, which sat cold. "Patience Tessa, he will. You should know we make family our priority, and this is a family occasion." Cecil half scolded. "We're going to make sure everyone is complete before we begin." Tessa just rolled her eyes and turned to her phone. Her perfectly manicured fingers caressed the screen as she scrolled away. Lena let her eyes stray to the head of the table, where Thane sat. 'Why does he hate me so much but still let me clean his room?' Her eyes caught sight of his large breast tattoo peeking from beneath his shirt as his grey-blue eyes darted from one face to another, with Dante occasionally whispering something into his ear. His fingers strayed to his chin, and he stroked it in thought while Lena stopped herself from having wild imaginations. 'You're such a whore, you know that, right?' her mind scolded. 'I thought you were over him hours ago?' 'It's not that easy!' Lena argued back, her eyes still lingering on Thane's face, but then drifted to his lips. 'How could anyone get over someone like-' He suddenly turned in her direction and Lena quickly looked away, but she knew it was too late. He'd already seen her. Anyway, when she looked back up, his eyes weren't on her anymore, as he was back to his makeshift gossip with Dante. She finally released her breath, which she hadn't noticed she was holding. Then a loud, cheerful voice called as they walked through the main door of the house. "Hey, everybody!" Everyone's head snapped in the direction except Thane, but including Lena. She knew that voice even if she lost her memory. As the person slowly came into view, Lena's heart sank painfully, and she silently prayed for death."We were going to stay here for a few days. Just to stay away from people," He said, his eyes roaming her face, searching for a reaction. But Lena just stood there transfixed to the spot, her heart racing with different emotions.'Don't get too excited, it was first for Tessa, not for you,' a voice argued.'But he brought me to it. That means something.' Lena argued back. 'Adrian never did anything like this before.' she thought, trying to push out her greedy thoughts as she lifted her eyes to Thane. Her lips curled into a small smile. "Thane-" "Ignore it." He interrupted quickly and began kicking the flowers out of the way. Lena's smile dropped and she almost screamed as she watched him scatter the petals every other place other than where it originally was."Tessa always thought it was too much, anyway." He said, making sure none was left in the way. Then he turned back to Lena, whose eyes seemed to be glued to the scattered petals. "That's not why we're here. Come with me." He s
Lena sat in the reception, staring at the ultrasound photo in her hands, still refusing to believe her eyes as motherhood dawned on her.The other patients seating at the reception stared at her-out of recognition and surprise. But Lena didn't care. They wouldn't understand.Unfortunately, they couldn't determine the gender yet. But even if they could, Lena really wasn't ready for that yet. She was going to let this one sink in first. Finally lifting her eyes, she spotted Thane walking out with the doctor, both of them discussing in hush tones with Thane's eyes flickering to where she sat from time to time. Then they finally shook hands, and Thane walked over to where she was.The doctor, still with her familiar glow, mouthed. "Bye, Lena." And gave a small wave. Lena smiled and waved back, just as Thane got to where she was and stretched out his hand for her to take.Lena blinked, confused. But then she slowly placed her hand in his and stood up.Then, just like that, with her han
Lena confirmed that all wasn't well with Thane with the way he'd driven her to the hospital. First hint was him-Thane, driving by himself. It was surprising. Thane never drove himself. Then, the drive to the hospital seemed longer than usual, meaning he wasn't taking her to the hospital she was used to.And the way a dark cloud hovered above his head as he guided the car around bends and drifts, it was concerning. She really wished she could read his mind. Now, Lena was sitting in the exam room waiting for the doctor to come in. Her eyes flicked to Thane whose head was buried in his phone, leaning against the wall beside where she sat, his frown never leaving for once.He seemed really uninterested with what was going on. But why then did he insist on coming with her-taking her himself?Lena's mind raced, as she held onto her knee and gently squeezed it. This was her first prenatal visit for as long as she could remember and she was terrified. She glanced around the room.At a corne
Lena still couldn't shake the awkward feeling from the kiss she and Dante had shared, even as it'd been two days ago.Like how would she have known he was talking about her? If she'd known, she'd never have pushed him to make a move and she'd have avoided the kiss. Her head was a mess as she paced back and forth in the room. Her arms wrapped around her body. She was feeling like she'd betrayed Thane.'But wait a minute. Dante had had a crush on me all this while? Weird. I didn't notice a thing.''But why? Did he really mean all those things he said about me?''Oh, stop it. Stop it. You're married to his boss. Don't let the look in his eyes put ideas in your head,' she argued in her head.'Besides, you don't actually feel anything towards him. You're indirectly his boss as well. And what should go on between you two should be strictly professional!' her mind screamed.Lena groaned, fighting her emotions as the needing look on Dante's face after he broke the kiss flashed in her mind.S
"Did she say anything when she was leaving?" Lena asked Alex, who had been trying to clean her room quietly for the past twenty minutes. But Lena had decided to be the chatty one today.Alex hesitated, as if trying to focus on sweeping. But then she paused and looked at Lena, who was sitting on the bed. "For the last time Lena, I and Bridget were never friends. How on earth do you expect her to speak to me when she was almost in tears as she dragged her suitcase out of the house?"Lena folded her arms and turned away at Alex's indirect scolding. Thane and Dante had been so busy these days that Thane barely slept or took a second glance at her. And despite the whispers about Mrs Maddox and her troubles, Lena couldn't shake off the feeling that some of Thane's stress had to do with Bridget.'That girl is such a bother.'She and Thane hadn't even been in the same bed since she-well, since she'd given him head."Why are you so worried about her, anyway? You should be happy she's gone.
"The only reason this hasn't gotten to court is because they have no strong proof or witness." Dante said, watching Thane as he read through the stapled papers he'd handed him.Thane tapped his fingers on his desk in thought. A deep frown on his eyebrows as his mind raced.Things were getting out of hand with the entire issues with Tessa's death. As Mrs Maddox had refused to accept the fact that what happened was an accident. She'd threatened to go public again, then take it to the supreme court if Thane refused to come clean or at least produce Liam's family.Mrs Maddox was a troublesome woman, and everyone knew better than to go up against her. So most times when she came up with things like this, it was better to just ignore her.But this was different. This was a murder accusation, and Thane's reputation was on the line-he could lose a lot of things. Thane's jaw tightened. "What do you suggest I do?" Thane finally asked, keeping his eyes on the paper.Dante sighed and leaned int
Lena fumbled with the ring on her finger, smiling to herself as the car drove through the quiet evening streets. The interview had gone better than she expected, and she was glad she was given the chance to speak. And even though she'd lied through her teeth, she felt oddly proud of herself.'Thane would never cheat.' her mind mocked. 'What an irony.'She took a quick glance at her husband, who'd been quiet since they left the studio. She couldn't tell if he was pissed or impressed, or surprised, as he just held his usual unreadable look.He hadn't even said a word about their change of plans.'Was he ever appreciative of anything?' she thought. 'Handsome piece of shit.'"I can feel you staring." He suddenly said, his eyes still on his phone, checking through some messages.Lena brought her eyes back to her ring, her smile unfaltering. "How'd I do?" She asked sheepishly.Thane swallowed unconsciously, his brows creasing as he recalled her confidently lying on camera. He almost scoffed
Kelly chuckled at Thane's smile before straightening up and glancing at the tablet in her hands."Well, first of all," she began. "Everyone is surprised that despite the accident that took the life of your fiancée-Tessa Maddox; six time influencer of the year and supermodel-you got married just a few months after to another woman." She paused and turned her attention to Lena. "Now, the big question is. How did miss Lena come into the picture? Everyone wants to know." Thane smiled and paused his lips. He'd expected this question, but didn't know it'd be the first one. But anyway, he had no choice but to say what he'd rehearsed. Finally, he shifted out from his seat. "Well, usually-" "Um...um sir," Kelly interrupted, trying her best not to make the moment awkward.Thane paused. Lena frowned."I'm sorry," she said with a polite smile. "The question was for your wife,Everyone fell silent, and even movements behind the camera paused as everyone's pulse rate increased. Especially Lena.
Lena's eyes fluttered open, blinking against the morning light. She stretched, pushing the duvet off her body-Duvet? She sat up, remembering she hadn't slept with the duvet. She turned to her side but met an empty bed."Did he even sleep here at all?" She wondered, instinctively peeling under the covers as if checking to see if her clothes were intact. They were. She clicked her teeth in partial disappointment and got out of bed, rubbing her eyes.'What? You wanted him to rape you?' her mind mocked as she walked towards the bathroom to have a shower and maybe be useful around the house. She had just finished fluffing the pillows and arranging the bed neatly when the door clicked open and Thane walked in.They locked eyes for a few seconds. Thane taking in the features of the woman he'd legally tied himself with the previous day, and Lena trying to figure out why he was looking at her so strangely.'Is this how life being his wife is going to be?' she thought, turning her attention t
