I was still standing in Ethan’s room when the door burst open he walked in fast, phone still in his hand, his face hard with anger.

I called my parents he said, my stomach dropped then he added, And I called yours too.

The room felt smaller right away like the walls were closing in on me, i opened my mouth to explain everything to tell him I never wanted this marriage but he wasn’t listening. He didn’t even look at me in his mind, I was already guilty.

Less than thirty minutes later the whole Kingsley family sat downstairs I stood in the middle of the living room like a prisoner waiting to hear her punishment. Ethan’s parents sat on one side, Relatives filled every other chair. No one asked me to sit, no one offered me water, no one even looked at me kindly.

Then my parents walked in for one small second my heart lifted. Finally, I thought someone who knows the truth. I ran to them Mom, Dad, please, tell them I never wanted this marriage my voice was shaking so hard I could barely speak.

They said nothing my father walked past me like I wasn’t even there, My mother followed him without one glance.

My heart fell straight to my feet then in front of everyone they both bowed their heads to Ethan’s parents.

We are sorry they said the room went silent. I froze.

My ears rang so loud I thought I’d heard wrong.

My father sighed, We’re sorry for our daughter’s behavior.”

My knees almost gave out under me. What? was all I could say my mother shook her head “We never thought she would do something like this.”

I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think straight, What are you saying? My voice broke in half.

You forced me into this marriage. My mother spun toward me “Enough,” she snapped but I couldn’t stop. No! Everyone needs to hear the truth I pointed at my parents.

They forced me to marry him for one second the room shifted. A few people looked at each other. Even Ethan’s eyes narrowed a little and I grabbed that small doubt like a drowning person grabs a rope. Maybe, I thought. Maybe someone will finally listen to me.

Then came the slap. My mother’s hand hit my cheek sharp and sudden.

My head snapped sideways, pain burned across my skin for a few seconds I couldn’t move. When I finally looked at her again, she was glaring at me — like I was the one who had done something wrong.

How dare you? she hissed, after everything we’ve done for you. Tears filled my eyes but it wasn’t the slap that broke me It was that she chose them. Again. She always chose everyone but me.

My father pointed his finger at me his face full of disgust. “You ungrateful child.”

Those words cut deeper than her hand ever could. I gave up my future for this family, I said, my voice shaking. I gave up school every time you asked, I worked for this family. I did everything you wanted, Silence. No one cared, In that moment, I understood something painful — they had already decided their story and I wasn’t in it.

Right then Ethan’s mother’s phone rang she looked down, gasped, and said, “It’s Lily.”

Ethan moved closer at once and she put the call on speaker. My sister’s crying voice filled the room and every eye turned to her she sounded broken, scared, fragile — the perfect victim. My stomach twisted into a knot, I knew my sister better than anyone. I knew exactly what game she was playing.

Ethan, she sobbed “I’m sorry.”

Tell me where you are he said. More crying followed I closed my eyes, here we go, I thought the show has started.

Eva threatened me, Lily said. The room exploded Ethan’s mother covered her mouth. His father cursed under his breath, My own parents bowed their heads in shame.

Only I stood there knowing every word out of her mouth was a lie. “She locked me up,” Lily went on and my eyes flew open.

What?

She said no one would believe me if I told the truth, every face in that room turned to me and the hate in their eyes felt like something I could touch. I looked at the phone and said, “Liar.”

The crying paused for half a second then started again. Ethan noticed the pause but before he could think about it, Lily kept talking.

She told me Ethan deserved someone better.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The lies were almost funny now yet everyone in that room was swallowing them whole “I never said that,” I said. No one listened “I didn’t.” No one cared.

Ethan turned to me his eyes cold as ice “I’ve heard enough.

The room went quiet I already knew what was coming and knowing didn’t make it hurt less. He looked straight at me, jaw tight, fists closed at his sides. “I want this marriage over.”

My stomach fell through the floor no one in that room looked surprised, not even me. Who would want to stay married to someone they believed had betrayed them?

Then a new voice cut through the silence “No.” Every head turned. An old man walked slowly into the room and the whole air in the room changed. Everyone stood even Ethan’s parents, even Ethan.

I knew right away who he was — Ethan’s grandfather the true head of the Kingsley family. His sharp eyes moved across the room then landed on Ethan.

I said no divorce. Ethan’s face darkened.

Grandfather, you don’t understand. Oh, I understand perfectly the old man said taking his seat he looked at my parents, then Ethan, then finally at me his face showing nothing.

The marriage stands.” Ethan’s temper snapped.

What are you talking about? And then his grandfather said words that changed everything. “The contract.”

The room went dead quiet. Ethan froze. His father looked away, his mother wouldn’t meet anyone’s eyes. I knew right then there was something big I still didn’t know.

What contract? Ethan demanded, his grandfather stayed calm. The business deal signed between both families. If this marriage ends before one year the Kingsley family loses a major project.”

The room broke into noise I looked at my parents. My father couldn’t even meet my eyes. That was when it hit me — they hadn’t married me off to save the company there was more, much more. They signed some deal and I was the price they paid.

Ethan looked ready to break something. So I’m trapped?

No, his grandfather said simply. “You are married.

Silence again, then his eyes landed on me full of something close to hate. You’ll stay in this house he said but don’t misunderstand, you mean nothing to me.

Stay out of my way and don’t you dare think this marriage makes you my wife.” No one spoke up for me, no one objected. Because no one in that room cared what happened to me.

One by one they left — the Kingsleys, my parents, the relatives — until I was completely alone.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the floor, empty inside. Then my phone rang, Lily. I almost didn’t answer but I did.

What do you want? I said. She laughed not crying this time — a real laugh, cold and proud.

How was the family meeting? My hand tightened around the phone. You planned this?

Of course I did she said, and hearing her admit it hurt more than anything else that day.

You ruined my life I told her, No she said. “I saved mine.”

My chest ached. Why? I asked.

A pause then she gave me the answer that hurt the most. Because you’re expendable, Eva. Mom and Dad would never sacrifice me. The words hit like knives. You’re lying I whispered, Am I? Silence. And deep down I knew she wasn’t.

Then her voice changed the laughter drained out of it. Something almost nervous took its place.

You still don’t know why I ran do you? I frowned. What does that mean? A long silence stretched between us then she said something that sent a cold shiver down my spine. “If I were you, I’d be more afraid of your husband than of me.” The line went dead.

I sat there staring at my phone my heart pounding against my chest. For the first time since this whole nightmare began, I understood something terrifying — there were still secrets no one had told me and maybe, just maybe, Ethan Kingsley was the biggest secret of all.

The whole dining room went quiet the moment Ethan asked his question.“Is it true that three years ago… you almost died?”My heart stopped beating, I looked up at him my hands were shaking under the table. Across from me Lily’s face turned white, white like paper.Nobody said a word, nobody even moved. Then Ethan’s mother stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.“What is going on?” she said. “What hospital? What accident?”I looked down at my lap, I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to remember that time, and I really didn’t want Ethan looking at me like that. Not with worry, notice now, not after everything.“Ivy.?” His voice was soft. “Answer me.”My fists closed tight in my lap.“Yes,” I said. The word barely came out of my mouth, the room broke into noise.“What?” His mother’s mouth hung open, Ethan’s eyes went dark. “What happened to you?”Before I could say anything else, Lily laughed. It wasn’t her usual sweet laugh this one sounded broken, almost scared.“Oh my God,” she s

I didn’t see much of Ethan after what happened in the library.Three days passed we hardly talked. That wasn’t strange — we never really talked, not since our wedding. But something felt different now; every time we passed each other, I caught him looking at me just for a second then he’d look away, like he was trying to figure something out. Maybe about me, maybe about himself.By the fourth morning I couldn’t eat anymore. My mother’s words kept playing in my head over and over, like a song I hated but couldn’t turn off.As long as the Kingsleys are happy, our company will survive.I sat at the table and stared at my plate. Toast, fruit, coffee, Normally I’d force it down anyway. Not today. The food might as well have been sand.I stood up quietly I thought no one noticed. But I was wrong, I’d barely reached the door when Ethan’s voice stopped me cold “You’re not eating?”I turned around so fast I nearly lost my balance. Everyone at the table looked just as shocked as I felt — becaus
