I barely slept Lily’s last words kept circling in my head, I’d be more afraid of your husband than of me.

What did she mean? What was she running from? For the first time in her life, she had sounded truly scared.

The questions followed me into the morning when I finally got up, I went downstairs hoping coffee would clear my head Instead, I walked into another storm.

The moment I stepped into the dining room every voice stopped. The whole Kingsley family was there — Ethan, his parents, his grandfather, several relatives, all eating breakfast together.

Every eye turned to me at once and the room went still in a way that had nothing to do with quiet.

I froze by the doorway no one asked me to sit, no one said good morning, no one even smiled. I felt like a stranger who’d wandered into the wrong house — and somehow I was supposed to be the wife here.

Then Ethan’s grandfather spoke, Sit down. Just two words but they felt like a lifeline at least someone in that room saw me.

I moved toward an empty chair near the others — but before I could sit, Ethan’s mother’s voice cut through the air again.

Not there, I looked up she pointed to a chair far down the table, away from Ethan, away from everyone, like I was hired help instead of family.

The message was clear as daylight: know your place. My fingers curled tightly around the back of the chair and for a moment, I wanted to just walk out. Instead, I lowered myself into the seat without a word.

A servant placed food in front of me before I could even lift my fork, Ethan’s mother spoke again. “You must be very proud of yourself.”

The whole room went still I looked up slowly. Pardon? Her mouth curved into a smile with no warmth in it at all — just teeth. “You got exactly what you wanted?

I stared at her too tired to fight back I didn’t want this marriage,” I said quietly. Ethan let out a short, cold laugh the kind that has no humor in it, only anger.

Really? His eyes locked onto mine. If that’s true, why didn’t you say something before the wedding?

That question hit me like a slap, because I had asked myself the same thing a hundred times. Why didn’t I speak up? Why didn’t I scream the truth in front of everyone?

The answer was simple and ugly: I was scared.

My whole life my parents had taught me that obeying them mattered more than my own happiness. I had been trapped long before that wedding day, but I knew none of that would matter to Ethan now. Not when he already believed I had tricked him.

I tried, I whispered, but his face hardened like stone. You should have tried harder. Those words stung more than I wanted to admit — because maybe he was right.

Breakfast dragged on in silence so thick I could barely swallow. Every bite felt stuck in my throat. Finally, Ethan stood, straightened his jacket, and spoke without even glancing at me.

I’m leaving for the office I thought that was the end of it, i was wrong "Make sure she understands the rules, he added. My stomach dropped like a stone into water. Rules? His mother smiled don’t worry.

Then he looked at me — really looked at me — and his eyes held nothing at all like windows with the lights turned off inside. Stay away from my office he said, A pause “Stay away from my room.” Another pause colder this time and most of all… stay away from me.

The front door slammed behind him a moment later, and the whole house seemed to hold its breath until his car was gone.

Then his mother turned to me and whatever softness had been on her face vanished completely.

Let me make this simple for you,” she said. You may have tricked your way into this family but don’t you dare think of this house as your home. You’re only here because Grandfather won’t allow a divorce.

I glanced toward the old man he kept eating calmly as if none of this had anything to do with him.

You will not attend family events she went to.

You will not represent the Kingsley name, you will not embarrass us, I finally looked up and asked, What exactly do you want from me?

Her answer came without hesitation “Disappear.”

The room went silent again I waited for someone — anyone — to say she was being cruel but nobody did, not even Grandfather.

Hours later I wandered through that huge beautiful mansion with nowhere to go. It was full of expensive things but it didn’t feel like a home — it felt like a museum where I wasn’t allowed to touch anything.

The servants looked nervous whenever I passed. The family looked straight through me like I was made of glass. I wasn’t a wife, I wasn’t a daughter-in-law, I wasn’t even really a guest, I was just… tolerated.

Around noon my phone rang it was my mom. A short bitter laugh escaped me — now she wanted to talk I picked up anyway.

What? She sounded annoyed already Is that how you speak to me? I closed my eyes. You slapped me yesterday I reminded her.

Silence, then a sigh. “As if I had a choice.”

Something in me snapped you always have a choice I said, my voice shaking. “You chose Lily.” She didn’t deny it — and that silence hurt worse than any words could have.

Then she said something that broke whatever small hope I had left. Just endure it she said, calm as ever. “As long as the Kingsleys stay happy our company survives.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing “So that’s all I am to you? A business deal?” She said nothing.

That silence was answer enough the call ended soon after, and I sat alone in the garden staring at my phone until the sun began to sink.

That’s when I heard voices near the study window. I wasn’t trying to listen but one name caught me like a hook — Lily. Ethan’s mother was on the phone and her voice had turned soft, gentle even, a kindness she had never once shown me.

Don’t worry dear, she said. We all know you’re the victim but once this settles down, we’ll fix everything.

My chest went tight. Fix everything? We always wanted you as Ethan’s wife she said. My whole world seemed to tilt, they weren’t just tolerating me — they were waiting, waiting for their chance to replace me with Lily. Waiting to erase me like a mistake in pencil.

Right then my phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number: Ask Ethan what happened three years ago.

My heart started pounding before I could even process it, another message came through. If you want to know why your sister ran away, start there.

  • The Billionaire’s Unwanted Substitute Wife    Chapter 8: The Truth Lily Never Wanted Exposed

The whole dining room went quiet the moment Ethan asked his question.“Is it true that three years ago… you almost died?”My heart stopped beating, I looked up at him my hands were shaking under the table. Across from me Lily’s face turned white, white like paper.Nobody said a word, nobody even moved. Then Ethan’s mother stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.“What is going on?” she said. “What hospital? What accident?”I looked down at my lap, I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to remember that time, and I really didn’t want Ethan looking at me like that. Not with worry, notice now, not after everything.“Ivy.?” His voice was soft. “Answer me.”My fists closed tight in my lap.“Yes,” I said. The word barely came out of my mouth, the room broke into noise.“What?” His mother’s mouth hung open, Ethan’s eyes went dark. “What happened to you?”Before I could say anything else, Lily laughed. It wasn’t her usual sweet laugh this one sounded broken, almost scared.“Oh my God,” she s

I sat up slowly in bed as Ethan continued answering Lily’s call. The room felt smaller all of a sudden, like the walls were closing in on me.He stood by the window, his shoulders stiff while Lily’s voice poured out of the phone.“She’s always been manipulative, Ethan. Don’t let her fool you, Ivy has been pretending to be weak since we were kids.”I lowered my eyes, my hands found the blanket and gripped it tight.Normally, Ethan would have agreed with her.Normally, he would have blamed me too.Normally, he would have reminded Lily that he was trapped in this marriage because of me. But tonight was different, tonight he said nothing. The silence went on, long enough that Lily noticed it. Long enough that I noticed it too. Then Ethan looked at me again, his eyes moved from my pale face to the food beside my bed that I hadn’t touched. You said Ivy would do anything for money?Yes, Lily answered quickly because she would. His voice stayed calm. Then why is she living like this?Silence.

I didn’t see much of Ethan after what happened in the library.Three days passed we hardly talked. That wasn’t strange — we never really talked, not since our wedding. But something felt different now; every time we passed each other, I caught him looking at me just for a second then he’d look away, like he was trying to figure something out. Maybe about me, maybe about himself.By the fourth morning I couldn’t eat anymore. My mother’s words kept playing in my head over and over, like a song I hated but couldn’t turn off.As long as the Kingsleys are happy, our company will survive.I sat at the table and stared at my plate. Toast, fruit, coffee, Normally I’d force it down anyway. Not today. The food might as well have been sand.I stood up quietly I thought no one noticed. But I was wrong, I’d barely reached the door when Ethan’s voice stopped me cold “You’re not eating?”I turned around so fast I nearly lost my balance. Everyone at the table looked just as shocked as I felt — becaus
