Maya walked along unfamiliar streets, unsure where they would lead. However, as the atmosphere grew quieter and more suspicious, Maya decided to return to the original path.
Looking around, the slender woman swallowed her saliva. The silence was the only thing coloring the atmosphere around her. Closed shops and graffiti spray-painted by street artists made Maya certain that she should not have taken this route.
The sun was almost setting. Soon, it would be dark. If she didn't find her way back soon, this vacation would surely turn into a disaster, or even worse.
"Oh, God! How could I still call myself a secretary?" Maya cursed her own stupidity.
It was all because of a trivial matter. She couldn't remember the name of the hotel she was staying at. Since it wasn't her who arranged everything, Maya forgot to remember all the details.
The problem worsened when she used too much cash and forgot to bring her credit card. Buying a lot of milk and biscuits at the minimarket was unplanned. Moreover, before that, she had used quite a bit of cash to buy a pair of silver necklaces that drained her wallet. If only she had enough cash, she could have taken a taxi to avoid her feet from getting tired while searching for her way home.
Maya continued to walk back to her original location with a pounding heart. Why was her sense of direction so bad? Tears began to well up in her eyes. She prayed in her heart that God would keep her safe no matter how bad the situation got. Hopefully, things wouldn't get worse than they already were.
Unbeknownst to her, two men were observing Maya from behind. Earlier, they had been targeting a tourist who bought a lot of food to be distributed to the homeless children. A very rich woman! That's all that was on the minds of the two thugs. They intended to do something bad to Maya as they often did to many tourists who fell into their trap.
Maya got lost not only because of her own carelessness. The two men changed the street name directions that Maya remembered. The direction that was supposed to go right was actually turned left. They also took a warning sign of a dangerous area written in English so that Maya wouldn't read it.
The two guys exchanged glances and signaled to each other that it was time to execute their plan. They both nodded in agreement. Then the bald one yelled out, "Miss, do you need help?"
"Lost, huh? Let us give you a ride," added the chubby one.
Maya's heart sank. She turned around to see who was talking to her. It turned out to be two shabby-looking men with lots of tattoos all over their bodies and scars on their faces and exposed skin. They quickly gave her some brief info about their identities. The bald one had a smug grin on his face, while the chubby one looked downright scary.
Maya swallowed hard. She knew that these guys were definitely not good people to be around. So, she didn't answer their question and ran away as fast as she could without looking back.
Unfortunately, Maya's running speed was not supported by the soft leather flat shoes she was wearing. Her feet already hurt just a few seconds after running. Luck seemed to have not yet favored her. Her shoes were now torn from hitting a rock, causing her toes to stick out and bleed.
However, Maya didn't care about the pain in her feet. She continued to run for her life. She would rather have her body get a little hurt than lose the most valuable thing to her.
The bald guy yelled, "Hey, miss! You're pretty hot! Come back here, we won't hurt you!"
Chubby guy added, "Yeah, just come with us. We'll take you to a better place. Trust us."
"Oh, God! Help me!" Maya cried out in prayer.
The unfortunate woman's face looked like she had seen a ghost, her skin reddened and sweating, but her lips were so dry that she licked them repeatedly to make them wet. Unfortunately, her tongue was also dry.
Maya's breath was heavy and labored. She felt like she couldn't run any longer. Her feet were also very sore due to the open wounds on her fingers. Nevertheless, Maya pushed her exhausted legs to run faster.
Maya looked back to check the whereabouts of her pursuers. Unfortunately, she stumbled on a rock and fell because her gaze was briefly distracted. Maya's struggle was over. Her knees and elbows were now injured and bleeding profusely, with no hope of compromise.
The two criminals chasing Maya laughed in satisfaction. "Is your struggle over, Sweetie?" mocked the bald one.
"I thought we would play cat and mouse for longer," taunted the chubby one. "Thank goodness, my breath is almost gone."
The chubby one then approached the woman in front of him, who now had a face as white as paper. He observed the woman's body, now covered in wounds. Her white jumpsuit was no longer white. Dirt and blood had dramatically stained it.
"Wallet!" the chubby one extended his hand.
Maya had no choice but to comply. She then handed over all the money in her wallet, which was only enough to buy two cheap meals.
Naturally, the chubby one was not satisfied. "Is this all there is!" He threw the money back at Maya and grabbed her chin while examining her. "Your jewelry is not gold! Useless—"
"Calm down, Bro! Look carefully!" said the bald one, showing his right ring finger. His eyebrows raised. His eyes spun, pointing towards Maya's hand.
The chubby one furrowed his brow. However, he soon understood what his friend meant. An evil grin crept onto his face, revealing yellow and black, hole-ridden teeth. "A diamond ring! Hahaha."
The chubby one raised Maya's hand and forcibly took her ring. However, Maya refused and fought back. "No! That's my wedding ring! Don't take it!"
The impatient chubby one punched Maya right in the face. "Do you want your life or this ring?" he bellowed.
The chubby one forcibly pulled Maya's hand again. However, Maya struggled again and bit the chubby one. The chubby one struggled and hit Maya again. Maya endured the pain and did not let the chubby one take off her wedding ring. She kicked the chubby one's vital area as hard as she could to release his grip.
The bald one then helped his friend handle Maya. Maya screamed for help. However, the bald one silenced her until her screams sounded like incomprehensible murmurs.
"Because you didn't obey us, we will not only take this ring!" the chubby one yelled with sharp, menacing eyes. He still seemed to be in pain from Maya's previous attack. "Taste my revenge!"
Tears began to well up in Maya's eyes. No one could help her at this moment. She was about to lose something very valuable to her. Just as she felt that all hope was lost, suddenly a man's voice shouted out.
"Stop!"
The two criminals stopped and looked at the man who was standing in the middle of them. They exchanged glances as if they could understand each other's thoughts without speaking."What do you want? Are you looking for trouble, huh?" asked one of them fiercely. The chubby man turned, stood up, and walked towards the man who was trying to stop him. "Do you want to have some fun, Bro? She's so pretty, isn't she? Look! There are rarely beautiful women walking here on purpose," the chubby man asked while reaching out his hand to the blonde man's shoulder to invite him to party. However, the blonde man caught the chubby man's wrist and twisted it with all his might. The chubby man screamed in pain, then he tried to attack the blonde man with a kick that he thought would kill his opponent's movement.Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain because the blonde man was much more agile than the chubby man. He easily caught the criminal's leg. Then, he twisted and threw his opponent with all his
The cold night wind did not in the least cool Leo's feelings. Maya, lying weak and covered in blood, looked at him with eyes that were growing increasingly heavy."Are you okay?" Maya asked in a weak and stuttering whisper that only Leo could hear. Maya forced a smile as sweet as possible so that Leo would not be sad.Leo could only answer with panic and shaking his head. He couldn't believe Maya had helped him, even sacrificed her life for him. Why did this woman do something so brave for a stranger like him?Medical personnel quickly took Maya to the hospital. Leo accompanied the unfortunate woman. He knew he was a sinner. But this time, Leo believed in God and prayed to Him to save Maya. The commotion only clouded Leo's eyes and ears. He didn't care. His focus was only one thing. Maya had to survive no matter what."Doctor, please save her! No matter how much it costs and whatever it takes, Doc! Just as long as she survives," Leo said, half-conscious. The man's facial expression on
Meanwhile, at the hospital, an extremely undesirable situation occurred. Maya's condition suddenly became more concerning as she lost a lot of blood and needed a blood transfusion."I tried to stop Maya's bleeding by plugging her wound," Leo said incredulously, not believing what the doctor had told him."Sorry, we're just informing you of the actual situation," the doctor who replied, looking unhappy with Leo's current panic."Okay, so what's the problem, Doc?" Leo asked rudely, wiping his tired face. "You can just give her blood trans—""Oh my god! We're out of O negative blood supply!" one of the other doctors handling Maya exclaimed in panic. He had just received confirmation from the blood bank that the blood supply they needed was currently unavailable."What's your blood type?" Another doctor approached Leo and asked for his blood type. Unfortunately, Leo's blood type was not what they were hoping for."A," Leo replied weakly. "Negative."Without even mentioning his rhesus type
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Leo watched Maya's condition with concern as she still felt weak after the surgery. He was very grateful that Maya survived because of the help of the kids. It was truly a miracle."Leo! You haven't slept since last night! Your eyes are swollen and black..." Maya woke up and realized Leo was by her side. In her heart, Maya felt very grateful, even though her husband was not there, God sent a kind stranger named Leo to accompany her to the hospital. "Oh, my God! What about the payment later? Can you get the credit card that I left in the room?""Of course! Don't worry!" Leo answered to calm Maya. He reached out and put his arm around Maya's shoulder, then gently laid her back down on the uncomfortable hospital bed. "Don't worry about unimportant things!"Leo's face could not smile. His heart was crying. He licked his lips to suppress all the emotions that had settled and dominated his heart at this time. He wanted to take Maya away from Adam and Sabrina. He
That was Maya's third day in the hospital. Maya asked Leo not to accompany her all day. She told Leo to go back to the hotel and take care of himself.Maya felt extremely guilty. Leo's vacation was ruined because of what happened to her. If only she had not been careless, she would not have met the criminals. That day, Maya had to go back to the hotel. Her husband would be returning from his business meeting soon, and her dead phone would not help explain anything about her whereabouts in the hospital. That's why Maya quickly changed clothes and left the hospital room. She felt better and would ask to be discharged at that time and took care of all the administrative matters."I'm sorry, but in this hospital, we can't provide treatment until there's a guarantee of payment. So, your treatment costs have been covered, and you don't need to pay anymore," the administrative officer explained briefly to Maya without any intention of providing details."But who paid for this huge amount?" M
After arriving at the apartment, Maya opened her suitcase and rearranged all the contents. She immediately took the dirty clothes to the kitchen area and put them all in the side-opening washing machine located near the pantry. Her wound was still sore, for sure, but she didn't want Adam to know and worry about it.Done with the laundry, Maya returned to the room and tidied up the remaining items. She put her marriage certificate back into the file holder. She then double-checked her handbag's contents and ensured everything was there. She didn't forget to take out the carcass of her phone wrapped in a zipper plastic and put it on the nightstand."Your phone is broken?" Adam asked Maya after he came out of the bathroom, about to take his casual clothes. The dark-haired man was slightly surprised by the coincidence that happened to them."Yes. Sorry! Have you had trouble reaching me?" Maya asked with a perfect act. Her face looked fine as if nothing bad had happened to her."Well, not
No plan ever goes without obstacles, as well as Adam's plans. Not all of them brought goodness to his life.Sabrina's presence in the office every day disturbed Adam's concentration. That's why Adam never wanted Sabrina to become his secretary. Moreover, Sabrina was not as good as Maya in her work.Adam had to work hard even to organize files and schedule meetings that sometimes overlapped. Something he wouldn't have to do if Maya was his secretary. However, Adam was determined to go through all of this for the sake of his love and inheritance. Isn't it necessary to work harder to achieve a goal?Adam once wanted to hire Maya again at the office so that his head would not explode from dealing with things that should not be his concern. However, considering that he had already agreed to this with Sabrina, it was impossible for her to accept it if Adam changed his mind. Once he looked to the right, Sabrina would not give him a chance to look to the left."Goodness! Two meetings at the s
It had been a month since Sabrina replaced Maya as the secretary. During that month, Adam worked very hard, but many of his tasks remained incomplete, no matter how much he tried his best. Now, in front of Adam, his father had a stern expression on his face, as if he was going to devour his only son alive. He was clearly dissatisfied with Adam's performance."What have you been doing at the office? I asked Maya, and she said you even had to work overtime. Why am I receiving such a poor performance report from you?" said Mr. Paul in a loud tone. He sat in Adam's chair with his legs crossed, letting his son stand there motionless and guilty without being able to adequately defend himself."I heard you often cancel appointments with clients suddenly. Three investors even canceled their intention to work with our company. All in just one month! And that's your extraordinary achievement," Mr. Paul scolded while slamming the desk. His eyes were glaringly red as if they were about to pop out
