Her Return, His Heartache

Cynthia’s POV

‎"Let's get a divorce."

‎

‎I shook on the spot, my heart pounding in my rib cage. Was this some sort of prank or what was Daniel saying?

‎

‎I looked down at the paper he was giving to me, divorce boldly written on top of it.

‎

‎"What's this.." my voice broke out in whispers.

‎

‎He stood, his face devoid of any expression. "Is this a prank Daniel? If so, then you got me." I voiced, my lips curling up into a dry laugh.

‎

‎"Name whatever you want Cynthia." He muttered his a cold voice and I shook under his aura.

‎

‎What had come over my husband? Just this morning before he left for work, he had kissed me so passionately and even called me his usual sweet names before leaving, only to come back with this?

‎

‎I was even in the kitchen preparing his dinner, just for him to walk through that door, getting me thrilled that he was back home, then he shocked me with this nightmare. I shook my head vigorously. This wasn't happening

‎

‎Hot tears rolled down my face, this was not my sweet husband. "Did I do anything wrong? If there's anything I've done wrong, forgive me, Daniel, I'm very sorry, I didn't mean to do it. Please forgive me this one time, please!" I cried, my leg wobbled and I fell, kneeling in front of him.

‎

‎After five years of being married to Daniel, I never imagined a day like this would come, it shattered my being completely. Who was doing this to us, what was going on with my marriage of good five years without any memory of sadness?

‎

‎"Stop this already! Name your price and get out!" He yelled almost kicking me.

‎

‎My being wouldn't accept that this was Daniel treating me this way as I crashed completely in tears.

‎

‎Then something crawled into my mind, Daniel would never do something like this if he were himself.

‎

‎ I cleaned my tears slowly, making sure my vision was not blurry, then I looked up at his face, staring into his eyes.

‎

‎Just then, he smirked "You think I'm drunk?" He scoffed.

‎

‎"This is reality Cynthia, I'm done with this marriage, pack your things, ask for whatever you want, and get out."

‎

‎His voice was as sharp as a knife, piercing mercilessly into my heart.

‎

‎Daniel had finished me, where do I start from? I just found out I'm pregnant today, I was happy, waiting for him to come back so I could inform him, but he came back with a divorce paper I never imagined I'd get from him.

‎

‎Am I going to raise our baby alone? Severe pain gnawed at my chest I could spew out blood.

‎

‎"I'll give you any amount you request, you can start a new life somewhere, nobody will know you're divorced since I never introduced you to anyone or the media except family." He muttered, his voice calm as though I never meant anything to him.

‎

‎ The ease in his composure made me feel he had been pretending to me all these years.

‎

‎Sudden hatred engulfed my heart. How could he have lied to me all these years? All the promises, the softness, the love—was a lie, a complete lie.

‎

‎My eyes dug into his, malice rising in my chest. I got all the answers I needed. This was Daniel, he was not drunk or sleepy, he was completely awake, sober than he could ever be.

‎

‎ He made this decision with a clear mind and he meant to divorce me.

‎

‎He made up his mind. I realized there was nothing I could say to him to make him change his mind.

‎

‎ Slowly, I made it to stand up, just then his voice came on. My chest got engulfed with hope, for him to say that one thing 'It's a prank, Cynthia, I'm sorry I scared you, I love you.'

‎

‎But instead, I heard something else.

‎

‎"Since you wouldn't name what you want, I'd give you 50 million dollars." He muttered, tearing off a cheque and handing it to me.

‎

‎"Take this, it's enough to start a new life anywhere.." He voiced, holding it to my face.

‎

‎"Take it, Cynthia, you need it, out there is very harsh, remember you have nothing." He said.

‎

‎I'd heard it all from Daniel. At first, I was surprised, but it's no longer surprising to me.

‎

‎"Take it," he muttered, impatiently holding it to my face.

‎

‎Slowly, I stood up from where I knelt, collected the cheque, tore it into pieces, and threw them away.

‎

‎I didn't need his pity.

‎

‎He chose to throw us out without giving any reason, what was the fake empathy about? I was never with him for however much he thought he had. He was supposed to know this, but obviously, he wasn't that into me to know—a complete fake.

‎

‎I walked into the room that was not mine just a few minutes ago, my eyes darting around.
