Adrian's POV

Dawn leaked through the arched windows of my bedchamber, painting the black marble floor in streaks of pale gray.

Natalie stood near the foot of my massive canopy bed, holding a silver tray with fresh linen and a basin of warm water. She kept her chin lowered, her body locked in that masterclass of fake human submissiveness.

She thought I didn't know about the golden blade currently tucked beneath her maid’s apron.

I stood in the shadow of the velvet heavy curtains, barely three feet behind her. My dark cloak was half-unbuttoned, and my pulse hammered so violently it rattled my ribs.

I shouldn't have been this close. I was the Blood Sovereign, a warlord who had slaughtered armies without blinking. Yet here I was, standing in the dark, driven half-mad by the sheer physical presence of my own assassin.

She shifted slightly to set the basin down.

The motion stirred the air between us.

Her scent exploded into my nostrils—an overwhelming burst of sun-warmed jasmine, crushed leaves, and the pure, intoxicating heat of living blood. It was a sensory assault. My vampire senses magnified every molecule of it until it tasted like honey on the back of my tongue.

My throat clenched. My fangs extended with a sharp, aching pulse, pricking my lower lip.

Gods above.

The scent hit me like a physical blow. My breath hitched in my chest, a sudden, blinding wave of heat surging straight down to my lower belly. I leaned back against the stone wall, gripping the carved mahogany bedpost so hard the wood groaned.

My muscles coiled tight. Pressure built instantly in my hips, wild and uncontrollable. I closed my eyes, my teeth grinding together as a low, silent groan died in my throat.

The heat spilled over. A sharp, convulsive climax hit me right there in the shadow of the curtain, spilling thick heat into my breeches as my blood roared like a furnace.

I didn't utter a sound. I didn't let my breath stammer.

I stood frozen in the dark, my heart hammering against my ribs while the intense physical aftershocks rippled through my thighs. I forced my face to remain an absolute stone, hiding every fraction of the shameful surrender she had just caused without even touching me.

She turned around, holding the warm towel. “Your Majesty? Your punishment… should I kneel?”

I stepped out of the shadows, my voice dropping into a register so cold and detached it masked the raw tremor still burning beneath my skin.

“Kneel?” I murmured, stepping into her space until the tips of my boots touched her leather shoes. “You think a broken decanter is solved by kneeling, Natalie?”

Her dark eyes lifted to meet mine. For a split second, I caught the lethal flash beneath her lashes—the assassin calculating the distance to my throat. Then the mask dropped back into place, soft and vulnerable.

I reached out, my fingers wrapping around her delicate chin. I squeezed just enough to force her head back, my thumb tracing the swell of her lower lip. She flared hot beneath my touch, her skin practically humming with hidden solar magic.

“Your heart isn't beating fast enough,” I lied softly, leaning down until my breath fanned across her ear. “A nervous maid’s pulse races. Yours is as steady as a corpse’s. Why is that?”

Natalie's throat bobbed in a hard swallow. “I am merely trying to contain my terror, My Lord.”

“Liar,” I whispered, my lips brushing the sensitive skin of her jawline.

Before I could drag her further into my arms, the heavy obsidian double doors of my chamber slammed open without a knock.

The ambient temperature in the room plunged into a sickening, necrotic chill.

“Your Majesty,” a raspy, grating voice echoed across the chamber. “The sun rises. The Council demands your audience.”

I didn't let go of Natalie immediately. I deliberately kept my hand on her chin for two full seconds, letting the intruder see her locked in my grip, before I slowly withdrew my fingers and turned my head.

The High Priest Williams stood in the doorway.

Clad in the blood-red robes of the High Clergy, his sunken eyes burned like dying embers behind a pale, bone-like face. Behind him stood two heavy-armored Bloodguards, their hands resting on the pommels of their silver broadswords.

“Williams,” I rasped, stepping back to drape my arm over the bedpost, masking the dark stain on my trousers with the drape of my tunic.

“You forget your place. Barging into my private quarters carries a penalty of flaying.”

Williams didn't flinch. He glided into the room, his long robes dragging silently across the marble.

“The Red Moon approaches in three nights, Sovereign,” Williams said, his voice like dry leaves scraping over stone. “The ancient covenants require a sacrifice to bind the blood-seal on our borders. The Council has prepared the shortlist of highborn maidens.”

He unrolled a thick parchment scroll, holding it out with pale, trembling fingers.

“Lady Caelia of House Vane. Lady Yvaine of the Northern Marches,” Williams recited, his dead eyes fixed on me. “Choose one. Her blood must fill the ceremonial basin before the eclipse, or the barrier fails.”

I didn't even look at the scroll.

“No,” I said flatly.

Williams’ gaze narrowed. “No? Your Majesty, this is not a request. It is the sacred law of the Blood Throne. Refusing the sacrifice is royal heresy.”

“I said no,” I repeated, my voice dropping an octave into a dark, reverberating growl that made the glass decanters on my table vibrate.

“There is no other way!” Williams snapped, taking a step closer. The dark, necrotic aura around him flared, smelling of old graves and dried coppery blood. “The bloodline demands a maiden of purity. If you defy the High Clergy, the court will question your fitness to rule—”

I moved so fast the air cracked.

In less than a heartbeat, I was standing inches from Williams face, my fangs fully bared, my crimson eyes burning with lethal magic. The sheer force of my aura slammed into the High Priest, forcing his two guards to take an involuntary step back, their steel scabbards clattering against their armor.

“Question my fitness?” I sneered, leaning down into his pale face. “Try me, Priest. See how many of your clergy survive sunrise.”

Silence stretched tight across the room, thick enough to suffocate.

While Williams held my glare, my peripheral vision stayed locked on the corner of the room.

Natalie had backed away toward the curtain, standing in the shadows with her hands folded neatly over her apron.

She looked terrified to the untrained eye. But I felt it—the minute, hyper-focused shift in her energy. She wasn't cowering. Her eyes were fixed on the base of Williams’ neck, tracking the pulse of his necrotic magic. She was measuring his power, analyzing his defenses, calculating how hard it would be to kill him if he got in her way.

My clever little sun-blade, I thought, a bitter pulse of pride flaring in my chest. She isn't just targeting me. She's mapping the entire court.

Williams slowly lowered his scroll, his thin lips twisting into a sneer.

“Your defiance will bring ruin upon us all, Adrian,” the Priest hissed softly.

He began to turn back toward the open doors, but as he passed the corner where Natalie stood, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Williams’ sunken eyes drifted down, locking onto Natalie's face.

Natalie instantly dropped her head low, her shoulders trembling in a perfect show of frightened servitude. But Williams’ nostrils flared. He leaned in close to her, his long, gaunt nose catching the subtle, warm draft wafting off her skin.

I went rigid. My hand instinctively dropped to the hilt of the dagger at my hip.

Williams raised a single, gray-skinned finger, tilting Natalie's chin upward just as I had done moments before. His yellowed eyes bored into hers, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across his face.

“An intriguing little creature,” Williams whispered, his voice dripping with venom. He leaned down, his lips barely an inch from her ear as he dropped a cold, deliberate threat.

“If the Sovereign will not give us a highborn maiden… lesser blood burns fastest on the altar, child.”

POV Adrian"Look at the sky, Sovereign," Commander Kael muttered, his voice trembling as he stood beside me on the high balcony. "It isn't even dusk, and the light is dying."I didn't answer him right away. I kept my hands resting heavy on the stone balustrade, staring out over Aethelgard. The sky wasn't blue, nor was it turning the soft gold of twilight. It was bruised a deep, unnatural purple that looked like rotting fruit, bleeding dark violet down over the mountain peaks. The Red Moon was moving into alignment, hours ahead of schedule."The shadow is reaching the outer courtyard," Kael continued, his boots shifting nervously on the stone. "The men are panicking. The servants are hiding in the kitchens. They know what night this is.""Let them panic," I said, my voice low and flat. "Panicking keeps them alert.""They think you won't survive the night," Kael blurted out. He instantly winced, catching himself. "My Lord... I mean""Th

POV Natalie"You’re terrible at hiding, Natalie."The whispered voice rasped against the back of my neck like velvet over steel. My breath hitched in my throat. I froze, my hand still outstretched inside the hollowed compartment behind a row of crumbling leather bound scrolls. The forbidden archives of the High Council were pitch black, illuminated only by the faint silver rays of moonshine slanting through the high arched windows.Slowly, terrifyingly, a heavy, warm hand closed around my wrist, pulling my hand away from the secret cavity before I could grab the royal ledger hidden inside.I spun around, my back slamming against the towering oak bookshelf.Adrian stood towering over me in the darkness. He wasn't wearing his formal house robes or his polished armor. He wore a simple, unbuttoned dark shirt, his dark hair falling wildly over his forehead, and his shadow magic trailing off his shoulders

POV Adrian"If the High Council catches us beneath the sanctum, they won't settle for the dungeons, My Lord," Dax whispered, his voice barely a breath against the cold stone. "They'll burn us on the library steps for high treason.""Then stop breathing so loudly and keep your hand on your hilt," I muttered back.I pressed my thumb against the center of the vault's iron door. Shadow magic bled from my pulse into the black steel, devouring the ancient ward glyphs one by one. The lock gave a heavy, wet click like bone snapping underwater and the massive door creaked open an inch.Smell came first: stale air, dried parchment, dead blood, and ozone."Stay at the threshold," I instructed, slipping through the narrow gap into the pitch-black gloom of the forbidden vault beneath the Grand Library. "If the outer wards flicker, give the signal and lock me in.""Lock you in?" Dax hissed through the door. "Are you mad?"

POV NatalieA hard hand yanked me backward into the damp shadows beneath the rose trellis before a scream could form in my throat.A cold blade pressed flush against my windpipe—not Adrian’s heavy, shadow-forged steel, but something thinner, lighter, and dangerously familiar. The distinct scent of dried wormwood and bitter ash filled my lungs."Scream and I’ll open your neck before the guards take their next step," a voice rasped against my ear.I froze, the damp soil crumbling under the heels of my worn maid’s boots. "Celine."The blade didn't move an inch. Celine dragged me deeper into the overgrown hollow behind the high stone archway, hidden from the moonlit gravel paths of the royal garden. She released my neck with a brutal shove, sending me stumbling against the lichen-covered brickwork.I turned, clutching my collar, to face my high priestess.Celine looked like a corpse wrapped in dark silk. Her once-striking face was drawn tight over visible bone, her gray eyes bloodshot and

POV Natalie"You expect me to wash your skin after threatening to break my neck an hour ago?"I kept my voice steady, though my heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. I stood at the edge of the sunken marble bath, steam rising in thick, fragrant clouds that smelled of crushed nightshade and sandalwood.Adrian stood at the edge of the pool, his dark robe already unfastened, revealing the broad, bronze expanse of his chest and the sharp, silver scarred lines of his shoulders. The dagger he had given back to me sat warm and heavy against my thigh, tucked securely inside the secret fold of my dress."It is not an expectation, Natalie. It is the protocol," Adrian said without turning around. His voice was low, carrying a strange, raspy grain that hadn't been there earlier. "The eclipse occurs at midnight tomorrow. The blood in my veins must be purged of shadow grit, or the ritual will tear me apart from the inside out.""And why must I do it?" I demanded, picking up the heavy b

POV Adrian"Explain this before I call the Guard to drag you to the dungeons."I threw the narrow, shadow-forged blade onto the polished oak table between us. The metal didn't ring; it hummed, a faint… forbidden resonance of blood-bound magic that vibrated straight through the floorboards under my boots.Natalie flinched, stepping back until her shoulders struck the heavy tapestry draped over the stone wall. Her breath hitched, raw and fast, but her eyes remained locked on the black steel."I asked you a question, Natalie," I growled, stepping around the table. The shadow magic lingering beneath my own skin writhed, darkening the candlelight until the room felt suffocatingly small. "You are a quiet, clumsy maid who barely raises her eyes when she sets down my tea. So why do you have high-grade, unsanctioned magical steel hidden in the lining of your bodice?""My Lord—""Do not lie to me!" My voice cracked through the silence like a whip. "That blade carries a spirit-binding rune. It i
