Kael had killed men.

He had buried his father. He had fought his way to the head of the largest clan in the Five, and he had never once, in thirty-one years, felt the floor of the world drop out from under him.

Until now.

“She’s not breathing!”

Tamsin’s scream was still in the air when he moved.

The wound in his side tore. He didn’t care. He hauled himself over Nyra and put two fingers against her throat.

Nothing.

“Rourke, get the kit from the truck. Now.”

“Kael, you just—”

“NOW.”

Rourke ran.

The alarm didn’t stop.It climbed through the tower floor by floor, a low, throbbing wail that Nyra felt in her teeth.Kael was already moving. He scooped the reliquary into the handkerchief, shoved it in her clutch, and threw her a pair of sneakers from the closet.“Shoes. Now.”“I’m in a ball gown.”“Then you’re a ball gown in sneakers. Move.”Someone pounded on the door.Kael put himself between it and her, his body already changing. Shoulders thickening. Fingers curling. A growl rose in his chest.“Highness!” Silas’s voice. “Highness, open the door!”Nyra yanked it open.Silas stood in the hall, his coat torn at the shoulder, a thin cut across his cheek already sealing. Behind him, the corridor was empty. For now.“He knows,” Silas said. “The ward on the reliquary was keyed to the king’s own blood. When the seal broke, he felt it.” His ancient eyes found hers. “And Captain Varga told him what he saw at the gala. Your hand, in the dark. The guards beside you, failing.”Nyra’s stoma

“Wait.” Kael crossed the room in two strides. “You don’t know what that’ll do to you.”“I know exactly what it’ll do. It’ll show me something.” Nyra tipped the reliquary. A single dark bead rolled to the lip, thick and slow, almost black. “Blood remembers.”“And the last time you touched memory blood, you burned with fever all night.”“So hold my hair back.”“Nyra.”She looked up at him.“Someone killed Corvin Hale and carved my mark over his body,” she said quietly. “Someone killed Father Tobias. Someone is killing everyone who ever kept me safe. Mara might be next. Jade might be next. You might be next.” Her voice cracked. “I’m done not knowing.”Kael held her gaze for a long moment. Then he sat down on the floor beside her, back against the couch, and pulled her between his knees so her spine rested against his chest. His arms came around her like a seat belt.“Okay,” he said into her hair. “I’ve got you.”Nyra let the drop fall onto her fingertip.Cold.Then nothing at all.* * *

Darkness.Total. Absolute. The kind that has weight.Somewhere a woman screamed. Glass shattered. The string quartet died mid-note with a screech of bow on string. And then the vampires began to laugh.Low, delighted laughter, all around her in the black. To them this wasn’t darkness. It was dim lighting. They could see everything.Nyra couldn’t see her own hand. She clutched the bag to her chest. The reliquary was a hard, cold weight inside it. Her heart slammed against it.“Nyra.” Lucien’s voice, right beside her. “Don’t move.”“Wasn’t planning on it.”“Someone cut the power. The backup should—”He stopped. She felt him turn. Felt the air move. Then a hand closed around her upper arm and yanked. Not Lucien. Not Kael. The grip was thin and strong and cold as a pipe in January. It dragged her two stumbling steps sideways, away from the curtain, into the crowd. She heard the whisper of steel leaving a sheath.Every EMT instinct she had screamed at once.Nyra dropped. She went boneless,

Lucien stepped through first. Nyra followed, the folding knife already open in her hand. The Archive went on forever.Shelves rose into the dark, forty feet high, crammed with scrolls and ledgers and iron boxes. Ladders on rails. Narrow aisles that branched and branched again, like the inside of an enormous brain. Pale lamps hung on chains, glowing a sickly green. The breathing came from a desk near the entrance.Something sat behind it.He might once have been a man. He was tall and impossibly thin, wrapped in brown robes gone gray with dust. His skin was like old paper. His eyes were milk-white and sightless, and from his wrists ran two fine silver chains, bolted into the stone floor. He lifted his head.“Blood of the throne,” he rasped. “And something else.”His nostrils flared. Slow. Wet.“Something that smells like the end of the world.”Nyra’s grip tightened on the knife.“Brother Anselm,” Lucien said evenly. “Keeper of the Archive. Bound to it in 1411. He’s harmless.”“I am not

The second dress was red.Of course it was red.“They’re not even trying to be subtle anymore,” Jade said from the propped-up phone. “That’s not a gown. That’s a crime scene with a zipper.”“It’s called the Crimson Gala.”“It’s called a trap, babe. With a theme.”Nyra twisted in front of the mirror. The gown was a deep, wet-looking scarlet, high at the throat and bare at the back again, with long sleeves that hid her hands. Someone had thought about that. Someone had thought about everything.“You’re making a face,” Jade said.“I’m not making a face.”“You’re making the face you made junior year before you punched Danny Kowalski.”“Danny Kowalski deserved it.”“Agreed. That’s not my point.” Jade’s voice softened. “Ny. Whatever you’re doing tonight, and I know you’re doing something, because you’ve got the I’m-about-to-do-something-stupid eyebrows, come back. Okay? I didn’t drive up a mountain in a red Civic with a hula girl on the dash and get growled at by a whole forest of hot men f

Nobody moved.Kael’s hand found the small of Nyra’s back. Silas stepped half in front of her. Lucien simply sighed, as if Seraphine were a parking ticket.“Lady Vey. Out for a stroll?”“I don’t stroll, Highness. I lurk.” Seraphine’s eyes never left Nyra. “And I’m not here to report you. If I wanted your father to know where you were, he’d have known an hour ago.”“Then why are you here?” Nyra asked.“To make you an offer.” Seraphine smiled. “Walk with me. Just you.”“No,” said Kael, Lucien, and Silas at once.Seraphine laughed, delighted. “Look at that. Three men, one opinion. A miracle in this building.” She tilted her head. “Fine. The Alpha may come. He’s too loud to keep secrets from anyway.”“I’m standing right here,” Kael said.“I know, darling. Everyone always knows.”* * *She led them to a small study on sub-level one, lined with books bound in leather that Nyra suspected was not cow. A fire burned in the grate. Seraphine sank into a wingback chair and crossed her legs.“You t
