"I would rather starve in the streets than work for a Blackwood."

Amelia stepped back so sharply her heel caught on the edge of the thick carpet, but she kept her balance, her chest heaving as she glared at him. The nickname—"little mouse"—tore through her carefully constructed armor, exposing the raw, bleeding nerve of her childhood.

Adrian didn’t pursue her. He stood exactly where he was, his hands casually slipping into his trouser pockets. He looked entirely unbothered by her fury, which only made the fire in her veins burn hotter.

"Don't flatter yourself," Amelia snapped, her voice trembling with a potent mixture of rage and adrenaline. "I didn't come here for you. I came here for a contract. But if this is how Blackwood Enterprises operates now—playing mind games instead of doing business—then you can find another firm to stroke your ego. I'm done."

She turned on her heel, her hand reaching for the heavy silver handle of the boardroom door.

"Walk out that door, Amelia," Adrian said. His voice didn't rise, but it carried across the room with the lethal weight of a falling guillotine. "And I will liquidate your firm by sunset."

Amelia froze. Her hand tightened on the door handle. She slowly turned back around, her eyes narrowing. "You can't do that. We haven't signed the final agreement. I am walking away, and there is nothing you can do to stop me."

"You haven't signed the final execution order," Adrian corrected, his voice a smooth, deadly drawl. He walked back to his side of the long mahogany table and picked up a separate, thinner file. "But you did sign the preliminary exclusivity agreement when your firm submitted its final bid."

He slid the file across the polished wood. It stopped precisely at the edge of the table, inches from where she stood.

"Page four, subsection nine," Adrian instructed, his gray eyes locking onto hers. "Read it."

Amelia hesitated, every instinct screaming at her to run. But the absolute certainty in his gaze forced her forward. She picked up the file and flipped to the fourth page, her eyes skimming the dense legal jargon until she hit the highlighted paragraph.

Her blood ran cold.

"If the bidding party withdraws their proposal after selection but before final execution, said party is liable for a punitive delay f*e equal to twenty percent of the project's total valuation."

Twenty percent of a forty-million-dollar deal. Eight million dollars.

"If you walk away," Adrian said softly, watching the color drain from her face, "your firm defaults. Your assets will be seized. Your partner, David, goes bankrupt. And you..." He paused, his gaze dropping momentarily before flicking back up. "You will lose the capital you need to keep your mother’s cottage and pay for her care."

Amelia dropped the file on the table as if it had burned her. The sheer, calculated cruelty of it left her breathless. He hadn't just stumbled across her name on a list of contractors. He had engineered this entire situation.

"You knew," she whispered, the devastating realization crashing over her. "You chose my firm specifically. You orchestrated this entire bid just to trap me."

"I am securing the best talent for my company," Adrian replied flawlessly, though a muscle ticked again in his jaw. "If my methods are aggressive, it is because I don't take no for an answer. You are going to redesign the Waterfront District, Amelia. And you are going to do it exactly how I tell you to."

He pulled a gold fountain pen from his breast pocket and set it gently on top of the final contract.

"Sign it."

Amelia stared at the pen. She thought of David, who had taken a chance on her when she was a nobody. She thought of her mother, Rose, whose gentle hands were increasingly twisted with pain. She had fought for years to build a fortress to protect them, and with a single piece of paper, Adrian had turned it into a cage.

Rage, pure and blinding, guided her hand.

She snatched the pen, flipped to the final page of the contract, and signed her name with such violent force that the nib tore through the thick paper. As she dragged her hand across the desk, the sharp edge of the freshly printed page sliced deep into the pad of her index finger.

She hissed in pain, a bright bead of blood welling up instantly.

Before she could pull back, Adrian was there. He moved with startling speed, pulling a pristine white handkerchief from his pocket and holding it out to her.

Amelia looked down at the fabric. Embroidered in the corner with dark, silver thread was the Blackwood family crest.

She stared at the crest, then at him. Without a word, she snatched the handkerchief, balled it up, and threw it directly into his chest. It bounced off his suit jacket and landed on the floor between them.

"I will design your buildings," Amelia said, her voice shaking with a promise of absolute war. "But do not ever touch me."

She spun around, shoved the boardroom doors open, and stormed out into the hallway. She didn't look back as she hit the elevator button, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm of survival.

She pulled her phone from her pocket with her uninjured hand to check her calendar for the first project milestone, desperate to put as much distance between her and the Blackwood building as possible.

The screen lit up with a new, automatically synced calendar invite.

Amelia stopped breathing.

"Tomorrow. 6:00 AM. Private Off-Site Site Inspection."

"Mandatory Attendance: Amelia Hart & Adrian Blackwood."

Amelia forgot how to breathe. The world narrowed to the man sitting in the leather backseat of Victoria Blackwood’s car. The graying hair at his temples was new. The expensive, tailored suit looked unnatural on his frame. But the soft brown eyes—the eyes that used to crinkle at the corners when he read her bedtime stories—were entirely unmistakable."Dad?"The word torn from her throat was a fragile, bleeding thing.Daniel Hart flinched as if she had struck him. He opened his mouth, his face pale and hollow, but Victoria reached out a gloved hand and gently laid it on his forearm. The gesture looked almost affectionate, but the underlying threat was crystal clear."Drive, Charles," Victoria ordered smoothly, not taking her eyes off Amelia."Wait! Dad, stop!" Amelia threw herself forward, her hands slamming against the tinted glass of the window. "Dad, look at me! Please!"The engine roared. The heavy tires kicked up gravel, spraying dust across her shoes as the sedan accelerated down

"Hide."The word was a barely audible, frantic breath against Amelia’s ear. Before she could react, Adrian grabbed her by the waist and pulled her deep into the shadow of the rearmost bookshelf on the gallery walk, shielding her completely with his broad frame. The rhythmic *thwack-step, thwack-step* of Richard Blackwood’s cane echoed off the high mahogany walls below.Amelia held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped beast. She was pressed flat against the cold wood of the shelving unit, the red personnel file clutched against her chest. Adrian stood inches from her, his arm stretched to grip the high shelf above her head, sealing her in the dark nook."Adrian?" Richard’s booming, gravelly voice cut through the heavy silence of the library. "I know you're in here. Your mother said you brought that Hart girl to my house."Adrian took a slow, deep breath, smoothing down his white dress shirt with his free hand before stepping out into the open gallery, resting

"Give it to me, Amelia."Adrian’s voice was no longer a soft, ragged murmur. It was the sharp, commanding bark of a CEO managing a catastrophic corporate leak. His hand shot out, his long fingers clamping tightly around the edge of the red folder."Get your hands off it!" Amelia screamed, ripping the file backward with so much force the heavy cardstock tore slightly in his grip. She scrambled backward along the narrow upper gallery, putting the heavy wooden reading pedestal between them. Her chest heaved, her heart thrashing against her ribs so violently she thought it might shatter them. She clutched the file to her chest like a shield, her eyes wide and wild."Amelia, you do not know what you are looking at," Adrian warned. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, holding his hands up as if trying to calm a cornered animal. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his eyes a stark, terrifying silver. "That is a classified personnel document. Hand it to me.""It’s a

The air inside the Blackwood Estate tasted exactly as Amelia remembered: lemon polish, crushed velvet, and suffocating silence. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing out the crisp morning air and trapping her inside a mausoleum of her worst childhood memories. The grand foyer stretched out before her, a sprawling expanse of black and white checkered marble illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier.Fourteen years ago, she had spent an entire Saturday watching her mother scrub every single one of those marble tiles on her hands and knees until her knuckles bled.Amelia swallowed hard, fighting the sudden, violent nausea twisting in her gut. She dug her fingernails into her palms, anchoring herself to the present.Adrian walked past her, his footsteps entirely silent on the thick Persian runner. He shed his charcoal overcoat, tossing it carelessly over the back of a priceless antique chair, and began unbuttoning his suit jacket."The staff has the morning off," Adrian s

"Mother," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped smoothly in front of Amelia. The subtle shift in his posture was instantaneous—a shield built from broad shoulders and tailored wool. "What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at the country club until evening."Victoria Blackwood slowly descended the marble steps, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She ignored her son entirely, her sharp blue eyes pinned to Amelia with the cold detachment of a scientist examining a specimen beneath a microscope."I live here, darling," Victoria said smoothly, stopping two steps above them so she could look down at Amelia. "Unlike some people, who seem to have forgotten their place."Amelia felt the blood rush to her face, a familiar, humiliating heat that threatened to consume her. But as she looked up at the woman who had spent years treating her mother like dirt, something inside her snapped into place. She was no longer a frightened child hiding in the estate

  • The Boy I Swore to hate    Chapter 5: The Cage

Amelia couldn't breathe. Her mind went completely blank, short-circuiting under the sudden, suffocating weight of his proximity. The heat radiating off Adrian’s body was a stark contrast to the freezing warehouse air. She could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against her own chest, a frantic rhythm that perfectly mirrored hers."What did she cost him?"The question echoed in her mind, making absolutely no sense. He was the one who had taken everything from her—her childhood innocence, her sense of safety, her belief that hard work mattered more than a bloodline.Yet, looking up into his storm-gray eyes, she saw something shattered. It was a raw, bleeding vulnerability that terrified her far more than his anger ever could. For one terrifying second, her gaze dropped to his lips. Her body, betraying every logical instinct she possessed, leaned infinitely closer.Adrian’s breath hitched. His eyes darkened, his gaze dropping to her mouth. The spell broke.Panic seized Amelia. She
