Chapter 2: Lock Your Door

Maya lasted exactly four hours before she cracked.

She had unpacked two boxes, ordered takeout she barely touched, and taken the world’s coldest shower. None of it helped. Every time she closed her eyes she saw Noah’s mouth forming the word *baby*, the way his sweatpants had hung low enough to show the sharp cut of muscle leading downward.

At 11:47 p.m. her phone lit up again.

**Noah:**

You’re still awake.

She stared at the message, thumb hovering. She should ignore it. She should put the phone on silent and go to sleep like a responsible adult who had sworn off complicated men.

Instead she typed:

**Maya:**

How do you know?

The reply was instant.

**Noah:**

Your light’s on.

And I’ve been standing on my balcony for twenty minutes waiting to see if you’d come back out.

Maya’s breath caught. She walked to the sliding door and pulled the curtain aside just enough to look.

Noah stood in the dark, shirtless again, one hand braced on the railing, phone glowing in the other. The moment he saw her, he lifted the phone to his ear.

Her phone rang.

She answered without thinking.

“You’re ridiculous,” she said, voice low.

“And you’re still dressed in that little tank top,” he answered, eyes locked on her across the narrow strip of grass. “Take it off.”

Heat flooded her face and shot straight between her legs. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.” His voice was pure gravel. “I’ve been hard since you stepped onto that balcony this afternoon. Take the shirt off, Maya. Let me see what I’ve been missing.”

She should have hung up. She should have closed the curtain and blocked his number.

Instead she pinched the hem of the tank top and slowly dragged it up, over her stomach, over her bare breasts, and off. The cool night air tightened her nipples instantly.

Noah’s soft curse carried clearly through the phone.

“Fuck. Look at you.”

Maya’s free hand drifted down almost on its own, sliding beneath the waistband of the soft shorts she’d changed into. She was already soaked.

“Touch yourself,” he ordered, quiet and rough. “I want to watch.”

She should have said no.

She slid two fingers through her wetness instead and let out a shaky breath.

Noah’s voice dropped even lower. “That’s it. Rub that pretty clit for me. Pretend it’s my tongue.”

Maya’s head tipped back against the doorframe. She kept her eyes open, staring at him while she circled herself, hips rocking into her own hand. The phone was pressed between her ear and shoulder so both hands were free. One played with her breast, pinching the nipple the way she liked; the other worked faster between her legs.

“Noah—”

“I know, baby. You’re close already. Been thinking about me all night, haven’t you?”

She nodded even though he couldn’t see it clearly in the dark.

“Come to the railing,” he said. “I want a better view when you fall apart.”

Maya stepped forward until her thighs pressed against the cool metal. She was fully exposed to him now—naked from the waist up, shorts shoved down just enough, fingers glossy and moving.

Noah never looked away. His free hand disappeared below the railing. She could see the flex of his arm, the slow, filthy rhythm of him stroking himself while he watched her.

“Come for me,” he growled. “Right now. Let me hear it.”

The orgasm hit hard. Maya’s knees buckled. She bit down on a cry, forehead dropping against the railing as her fingers kept working through the waves. Across the grass she heard Noah’s low, broken groan as he followed her over.

For a long moment the only sound was both of them trying to catch their breath.

Then Noah spoke, voice wrecked and soft.

“Next time I make you come, it’ll be with my mouth. And you won’t be standing on a balcony six feet away from me.”

Maya’s legs were still shaking.

She whispered, “Lock your door, Carter.”

He laughed, low and dark.

“You first.”

The line went dead.

Maya stayed on the balcony a full minute longer, bare chest rising and falling, the night air cooling the sweat on her skin. When she finally stepped back inside and locked the sliding door, her phone lit up one last time.

**Noah:**

Sweet dreams, Reyes.

Tomorrow I’m coming over.

And I’m not staying on my side of the grass.

---

Heat has clearly escalated. Mutual orgasm across the balconies, strong sexual tension, and a direct promise of more tomorrow.

**The last morning arrived without ceremony.Maya woke to the low sound of the city and the solid warmth of Noah still asleep beside her. For a long time she did not move. She listened to his breathing, to the distant traffic, to the soft tick of the clock on the nightstand. The light through the curtains was pale and even. She lay inside it and felt the full weight of everything they had lived settle around her — not as a story still being told, but as a life that had finally become complete enough to rest inside. The locked door. The rain. The years of careful distance. The night she finally let him stay. The wedding. The cabin. The long stretch of ordinary days that followed. The quiet conversation about a future that might one day include a child. All of it had led here.Noah stirred. His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her more firmly against him, and his mouth pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“Morning,” he murmured.“Morning.”She turned in his

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 118:What Remains

**The days that followed carried a different kind of quiet. It wasn’t emptiness. It wasn’t sadness. It was the particular stillness that comes when a long story has finally finished the work of becoming a life. Maya felt it most in the mornings — in the way the light fell across the bed, in the unremarkable sound of Noah breathing beside her, in the absence of any remaining sense that something still needed to be resolved or proven. They had said everything that needed saying. They had survived every version of almost. They had chosen each other in the rain, at the altar, in the cabin, and in the long stretch of ordinary days afterward. What remained was simply the continuing. On a clear weekday morning, Maya stood at the balcony doors with a mug of coffee and watched the city move beneath her. Noah came up behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist, and rested his chin on her shoulder the way he had done countless times before. Neither of them spoke for a while.“I’ve been th

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 117:The Soft Landing

**The morning light came in differently somehow.Maya noticed it as soon as she opened her eyes. It wasn’t brighter or softer than usual — it was simply the first morning in a long time that felt like it didn’t need to lead anywhere. No countdown. No quiet measuring of days. No sense that the story was still being written in real time. Just the ordinary weight of a life that had, at some point, become enough.Noah slept facing her, one hand resting loosely against her waist. Maya watched him for a while. The years of almost, the locked door, the rain, the wedding, the cabin, the long stretch of ordinary days afterward — all of it had settled into something quieter than a story. It had become the ground they stood on.When Noah woke, he didn’t speak right away. He simply reached for her and pulled her closer, pressing his mouth to her bare shoulder.“You’re already thinking,” he said against her skin.“I’m noticing the end of the telling,” Maya answered. “Not the end of us. Just the e

**A clear, cool Saturday moved through the city, the kind of day that made the light in the apartment feel open and unhurried.Maya woke to it and to the solid warmth of Noah still asleep beside her. For a long time she did not move. She listened to his breathing, to the distant weekend traffic, to the soft tick of the clock on the nightstand. The light fell across the bed in a clean line. She lay inside it and felt the quiet fact of their life settle around her, along with the soft presence of the possibility they had spoken aloud more than a week earlier. It no longer sat in the center of the room. It had moved further back, becoming something they lived alongside rather than something they kept examining. That shift felt important.Noah stirred. His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her more firmly against him, and his mouth pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“Morning,” he murmured.“Morning.”She turned in his arms so she could see his face. His hair was a mess. T

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 115:The Quiet Allowance

**A clear, mild morning moved through the city, the kind that made the light in the apartment feel open and unhurried.Maya woke to it and to the solid warmth of Noah still asleep beside her. For a long time she did not move. She listened to his breathing, to the distant traffic, to the soft tick of the clock on the nightstand. The light fell across the bed in a clean diagonal. She lay inside it and felt the quiet fact of their life settle around her, along with the soft presence of the possibility they had spoken aloud several nights earlier. It no longer felt new exactly. It felt allowed. That distinction mattered more than she had expected.Noah stirred. His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her more firmly against him, and his mouth pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“Morning,” he murmured.“Morning.”She turned in his arms so she could see his face. His hair was a mess. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. He looked at her with the same steady o

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 114:The Wider Room

**The second morning after the conversation arrived with a clear, cool light that made the apartment feel newly defined.Maya woke before Noah and lay still for a long time, listening to him breathe. The possibility they had spoken aloud two nights earlier sat in the room with them — not as a demand, not as a plan, but as a quiet expansion of the space they lived in. She could feel it in the way the ordinary morning light fell across the bed, in the unremarkable sound of the city outside, in the simple fact that nothing about their life had been required to change overnight, and yet something essential had been allowed to grow larger.Noah slept on his stomach, one arm heavy across her waist, face turned toward the mattress. Maya watched the slow rise and fall of his bare back and felt the familiar, steady weight of loving him settle under her ribs. It no longer arrived with surprise. It simply lived there, claimed and continuous, now carrying the additional knowledge of the future t
