“Come on. The cart’s this way.” Kyden guided me through the dense forest as I followed him with my trembling heart.

I clutched my small bundle of bread and my shawl tightly, my feet stumbling over the uneven path. Every step felt heavy, like the forest itself was trying to stop us from running. “You sure about this?” I asked one last time. “If they catch us…”

“They won’t,” Kyden said calmly, guiding me toward a cart hidden in the shadows. “Climb in. Stay low.”

I nodded, my throat felt tight and scrambled into the back, pulling a tarp over me. The wood creaked as Kyden climbed up beside me, his warm scent calming my nerves just a little. “Ready?” he whispered through the cold breeze.

“Yeah,” I said, though my heart was screaming otherwise. “Let’s do it.”
