Liana's POV

Months passed. Xavier started saving me a seat before I even entered the lecture hall. Somehow, we always ended up walking in the same direction after class, even when neither of us had a reason to. I laughed at his jokes—even the ones that weren't funny—and our study sessions somehow lasted longer than they needed to. Closer than I meant to let anyone get, if I was honest with myself.

One afternoon, Freya caught me smiling at something Xavier had said.

She raised an eyebrow. "You've been hanging out with him more lately.” Arms crossed, leaning against the wall outside the lecture hall. "You seem comfortable around him now." Her smile was there, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.

“We're just partners,” I said, adjusting the strap of my bag so I wouldn't have to look at her directly. It's not my fault the professor keeps putting us together.

Oh, just partners, she repeated, like the words tasted wrong in her mouth. Right. Don't worry about it.

I shrugged and adjusted my bag, Freya had always been protective, I figured she'd get over it.

So I didn't ask what was wrong.

Adrian's POV

I found Freya by the courtyard steps, alone for once, scrolling through her phone with the kind of focus that meant she was avoiding something. I didn't waste time getting to the point.

I see the way you look at Xavier, I said. Stop pretending you don't care.

She went still. For a second she didn't even look up, her thumb frozen mid-scroll, and I almost thought she'd let it go. Then she turned on me fast, her eyes sharp, phone forgotten in her hand.

Leave me alone, she said. I don't care about that bully.

I didn't answer right away either. I let the silence sit there between us, let her hear how little I believed her.

I've done my part, I told her finally, and I meant it as more than just an answer. Be careful.

She didn't respond to that, not right away. She just looked at me like she wanted to say something and thought better of it, her jaw tight, her grip tightening on the phone in her hand, and I walked away before either of us could make it worse than it already was.

Liana's POV

I was cutting through the hallway, half-listening to the noise around me, when Xavier caught up to me, a little out of breath like he'd jogged to catch me. Meet me at the basketball court, he said, Something fluttered in my stomach,I tightened my grip on my bag. "Okay," I said. "I'll meet you there.”

I found him already there when I arrived, the court empty except for him, bouncing the ball absently against the pavement, scratching the back of his head like he didn't know what to do with his hands. When he saw me, he stopped mid-bounce, and the ball rolled off toward the fence without either of us going after it.

Liana, he said, stumbling over the word. If, um. If someone liked you. Would you accept them?

Maybe, I said carefully, my heart doing something complicated in my chest. Depends on the person. Depends how well I know them.

He nodded like he was gathering courage from somewhere deep, and then it all came out at once, fast, like he'd been holding it too long to say it slowly. I like you, he said. I mean, I really like you. I want you to be my ride or die. My pookie. So, will you. Will you be my babe?

I stared at him. For a second, I couldn't find a single word.

Then a laugh escaped me."You're serious?" He nodded, My hands flew to my face.

I said yes before I'd even fully processed it, and I hugged him, and then he kissed me, soft, hesitant at first and then not, and his mouth tasted faintly like strawberry, and for a second the whole world narrowed down to just that.

He walked me to the gate afterward and said goodnight. I couldn't stop smiling on the walk back to my dorm. Every few steps, my mind replayed his words. Will you be my babe? I covered my face, laughing quietly to myself.

That night, I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling.

I smiled. Then groaned and buried my face in my pillow, a few seconds later, I was staring at the ceiling again.

I couldn't stop replaying his confession.

Then my phone buzzed against the mattress. A message from the school platform, notifications stacking up one after another until my screen was full of them. It took me a second to understand what I was reading.

Adrian had gotten into a fight. He'd been expelled.

I sat up, the warmth of the evening draining out of me all at once.

The last time I'd seen Adrian, he had been talking to Freya, both of them leaning close as though whatever they were saying wasn't meant for anyone else.

The next morning, I looked toward his usual seat.

Empty, I checked the hallway after class. He wasn't there. And he never came back.

  • The Bride They Tried to Erase    Chapter 35: Frenemies

Adrian's POVA year. Twelve months, actually, if I was being exact about it, and I'd gotten real good at being exact about it, counting the days the way some people count debts. Twelve months of checking every corner of this city, every contact, every lead anyone was willing to hand me for the right price, and still nothing. No trace of her. No sign she'd ever existed at all, like she'd dissolved straight into the streets the same way she'd dissolved into my life to begin with — quiet, sudden, impossible to hold onto once she'd decided to go.I sat in my office most nights now, long after everyone else in the house had gone to bed, staring at reports that said the same damn thing every single one of the last three hundred times I'd read them. Nothing. No sightings. No leads. Nothing that led anywhere except back to the same dead end I'd been circling for months. I told myself I'd stop eventually. That there'd come a point where continuing to search would stop making sense and start lo

  • The Bride They Tried to Erase    Chapter 34: The Dish I Couldn't Explain

Diana's POVI started working, learning the rhythm of the restaurant one order at a time, one table at a time, my feet aching in ways I'd never had to think about before this job forced me to notice them. There was something almost grounding about it — the repetition of carrying trays and refilling water glasses and remembering who ordered what, like my body was relieved to have something simple to focus on for once, something that didn't require me to think about who I used to be or who might be looking for me.There was one dish, though, that caught something in me the first time I carried it out to a table. I couldn't explain it, not really, not in any way that made sense even to myself. It wasn't the smell exactly, or the way it looked on the plate, but something underneath all of that — a small, strange pull I couldn't name no matter how many times I turned it over in my head afterward. My hands slowed on their own as I set the plate down, like some part of me expected it to be h

  • The Bride They Tried to Erase    Chapter 33: Hopscotch

Diana's POVI gave up on finding a forger the same afternoon I spotted that guard. Every hour I spent standing on some corner asking strangers about fake papers was another hour I was visible, another hour someone could clock my face and put a call through to the estate. It wasn't worth it. Not with how close that had been. So I scrapped the plan, got in the car and decided flying could wait. Driving didn't need an ID. Driving just needed gas money and somewhere to go.The highway blurred past for hours before I let myself breathe. I watched the city thin out in the rearview mirror — the skyline shrinking, the traffic thinning, the buildings giving way to long stretches of fields I didn't recognize and had no memory of ever seeing — until it finally disappeared altogether. Somewhere around the four-hour mark, my hands finally loosened on the wheel.I need to leave this fucking city, or everyone is going to find me. That thought had been circling since before sunrise, louder than every

  • The Bride They Tried to Erase    Chapter 32: Watch It Liana

Diana's POVI needed a way out of this city, and to do that, I needed an ID. My real one didn't exist anymore, not as far as anyone official was concerned, and I sure as hell couldn't walk into an airport pretending otherwise. So I did the only thing I could think of. I started asking around, quiet about it, careful about who I talked to, looking for someone who could get me something fake. Didn't need to be perfect. Just needed to be good enough to get me on a plane and out of this city before anyone caught up to me.Easier said than done. Every person I stopped either looked at me like I'd lost my mind for even asking, or looked at me too closely, like they were trying to work out why some woman in decent shoes was suddenly so interested in vanishing off the grid. I kept my answers short. Kept moving. Felt more exposed with every question I asked out loud, like I was leaving a trail of breadcrumbs straight back to myself.I was a few hours into it, walking down some busy street, sca

  • The Bride They Tried to Erase    Chapter 31: The Empty Room

Adrian's POVI woke up early, the way I always did, and got ready for work on autopilot — shirt, tie, the usual rhythm of a morning I'd repeated a thousand times without thinking about it. Except this morning wasn't like the others. This morning I had something I actually wanted to do before I left the house, and it wasn't work.I wanted to see Diana. We hadn't spoken since I gave her the tablet only at the time of the raid and I knew exactly whose fault that was. I'd been the one avoiding hallways, timing my meals so we wouldn't cross paths, keeping my distance like distance was some kind of solution instead of just another way of making things worse. I knew I'd been suspicious of her in ways I probably shouldn't have been — not without reason, but not fairly either — and I'd let that suspicion sit between us instead of just talking to her like a person deserved to be talked to.I told myself this morning would be different. I'd go downstairs, find her, and actually say something. No

  • The Bride They Tried to Erase    Chapter 30: Not A Prisoner

Diana's POVI'm fucking tired of Adrian Blackwood. I'm leaving here ASAP. I almost died today like died.My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my chest, and every time I closed my eyes, the fear came rushing back. I swallowed hard, trying to steady my breathing, but my body still refused to calm down.I hadn't slept, not really — I'd spent most of the night lying in the dark with my eyes open, running the same sentence through my head until it stopped sounding like a decision and started sounding like a fact. At 4 a.m. I gave up pretending I was going to rest, and got up.Everywhere was still dark. The house had that particular stillness it only had at that hour, like even the walls were holding their breath. I packed fast and quiet, throwing in only what actually mattered, my hands moving faster than my thoughts, like some part of me was afraid that if I slowed down even a little, I'd talk myself out of it. I counted the money Adrian had gi
