The walk downstairs felt like a journey I didn’t want to end, not with how hard my chest was beating. I caught up with Robin after a while even with how slow I was walking which only meant he had waited for me to meet up. As sweet as that was, I would’ve welcomed silence instead. The fear of the unknown made me want to isolate myself more than ever.

I wouldn’t have feared this unexpected visit if I had nothing to hide. But carrying a secret this huge… I had every reason to be worried.

People were already gathered by the time we made it there. Robin wasted no time pulling me over to where Aries stood, and Rex’s eyes lit up the moment she saw me.

“Thought you were going to take forever,” she said, one brow raised.

I managed a dry chuckle. “Any idea what this is all about?” I asked, going straight to the point.

Her eyes moved from me to Aries, who stood facing the door.

“Alpha Levon is on his way here,” Aries said calmly. “It’s really unlike him to visit unannounced, but I guess it must be urgent if he’s willing to break protocol.”

My heartbeat quickened and then dropped immediately after.

“So just him and the rest of the Alpha Association, right?” I asked.

Aries nodded. “Probably a meeting about the hunters or something,” he added.

I let out a tiny breath, just enough to ease a fraction of my worry. If it was just the Alpha Association, then the chances of this being about the Elders’ deaths were slim.

I should’ve felt guilty that my crime might remain hidden once again. But for now, I welcomed the fragile ease settling in my chest.

“You seem less tense now,” Robin whispered as his hand rested gently over mine. “What were you worried about before?”

I just smiled back. “It’s nothing serious,” I said quietly, turning my attention to the door. “I think they’re here.”

His attention shifted to the same direction as the entire room straightened up. My eyes stayed fixed on the door until it finally swung open and the energy that hit me felt like a brick to the chest.

This power… it wasn’t just Alpha Levon or the Association. It was more than that. Way more.

“You feel it too, don’t you?” Rex asked with a faint smile.

I nodded, moving closer to her.

“Your senses are a lot sharper now, Beta,” she said, still smiling.

But I couldn’t return it. Not until I knew exactly what we were facing.

“Who’s radiating this much power?” I asked.

Her gaze shifted toward two old men standing beside Alpha Levon. He looked almost ordinary next to them, certainly not like the Alpha of the Association.

“My wolf Ria calls them the Founding Elders,” Rex murmured.

My heart dropped.

“They rank higher than the ones we locked up,” Aries added, his voice tight. “Which is why I’m still baffled as to why they’re here, without so much as a word.”

“I guess we’re about to find out,” Rex said as they walked toward us, each stride heavy like a sentence being passed.

I took a step back, my hand finding Robin’s before I could stop myself. I ignored the startled look on his face and squeezed tighter. I didn’t need any supernatural sense to know what was coming. I had been found out.

The secret I’d tried to bury for months was clawing its way to the surface, and everyone was about to learn just how horrible I was for keeping it hidden.

I had prepared myself for this moment more times than I cared to admit, but it still felt too soon. Could I really face whatever punishment awaited me? Could I really… leave them all? Leave him?

“I’m sorry,” I whispered through our link before shutting him out completely. I freed my hand from his and took a step forward.

I guess it was finally time to pay for my crimes.

“What do you mean they were found dead?” Aries barked, his voice slicing through the air as I neared them. “Are you trying to accuse my pack of murder?”

“Calm down, Alpha Aries,” Alpha Levon said evenly, stepping forward. “We are not here to cause disruption, but to punish the one responsible.”

“And who exactly do you claim is responsible?” Rex snapped sharply.

My heart clenched at how hard they all fought to defend me. But my feet wouldn’t move. Was this fear pinning me in place—or was I simply too much of a coward to admit my own sins?

“We went into those dungeons ourselves a week ago,” one of the Elders said, stepping forward. “No one had been down there for nearly two months since your pack supposedly locked them up. We had Council matters to discuss with them, but what we found were rotting corpses.”

“They could have died of old age or anything else,” Aries said, his tone a touch calmer.

“Son,” the other Elder said gravely, “that prison keeps its prisoners alive. No one has ever died in it before. That was why we authorized their imprisonment, because whenever we needed them, we knew where to find them. Alive.”

Alpha Levon cut in. “From our investigations, they were slain and left to die in cold blood.”

My eyes stung. This was it. My end.

“Slain by who?” Aries demanded. “Stop speaking in circles and say it straight. Who are you here for? Who do you think killed them?”

“Not who we think,” one Elder said sharply. “Who we know. And it’s someone from your pack.”

That was all it took to unravel me. I’d been blessed with peace for two months, but peace built on lies never lasts. I took a heavy step forward just as the Elder’s voice rang out again.

“It’s your Beta,” he spat. “Your Beta Julian.”

Every eye in the room turned to me.

So this is it.

My life as I knew it—over. I would either be beheaded or thrown into the dungeons for the rest of my days. And if I had to choose, death would be mercy.

I was about to speak when Rex’s voice cut sharply through the silence.

“Is that supposed to be a joke?” she said with a bitter laugh. “If it is, I suggest you come up with something better.”

“Watch how you address us, young girl,” one of the Elders snapped.

Aries’s growl shook the ground beneath us. “And I suggest you watch how you address my mate,” he snarled.

Every gaze sharpened, the air thick with hostility.

My eyes darted between them all, the Elders, my Alpha, my pack.

What had I done?

Did I really deserve to be defended after everything?

Robin’s POVI didn’t know where I was going to find him. I didn’t even know exactly where I was going, but I knew there were a few packs around, and I was willing to check each one until I found him. I wanted to believe that he hadn’t left this vicinity completely, and I clung to that belief as my sprint slowly reduced into a walk.My emotions were all over the place as I tried to think of what reason he could have for leaving me behind once again, but after countless thoughts, I pushed everything aside. I would rather ask him when I finally got to see him—and he better have a convincing answer. I had spent months waiting for him. I deserved that much.I had walked for a while but hadn’t managed to come across a single soul. Was this path always so empty, or did the attack on the Rold pack make it this way? I wasn’t sure, but I kept going anyway. The first pack I knew of wasn’t that far anymore. All I had to do was ask if they had any visitors, and if not, then I’d move on to the next

I was stuck in a room with Lucian again. Not that I minded, but he, on the other hand, had spent the last thirty minutes whining about how he never got to stay alone. I watched as he paced the room, still mumbling to himself, and a laugh escaped me almost every few seconds. He was overly goofy the more time I spent with him. Just like I used to be before all this happened—when I teased Rex about her and Aries, when we fought over food or the stupidest things. I missed those normal days more than I could admit, and seeing Lucian like this felt like the closest I could get to them.“Are you even listening to me anymore?” he called, breaking my thoughts.I nodded with a smile. “Loud and clear,” I muttered.“Why don’t you take it up with Damon?” I added, brows raised. “I’m sure he’d love to switch with you.”“Okay… on second thought, it’s not that bad staying with you,” he said, suddenly dropping onto the bed beside me. “We need to make some plans anyway, before you end up with that crazy

I looked around, trying to spot the person this woman was referring to as her mate, but everyone looked just as surprised.“Is this another false bond in the making?” Damon whispered, eyes hard. “I wonder who the poor victim is this time.”I felt Lucian’s hand rest on my arm, his eyes unfocused for a moment.“Uh… I think you’re the victim, Julian,” he said as his gaze snapped back into focus. “You’re the poor victim.”My eyes widened. “What the hell are you on about?” I shot back—just as the Alpha spoke.“Point out who your mate is.”The woman took a step forward, and confusion churned in my chest. What the hell was going on? Why did she need to point out her mate when a true mate bond was supposed to be felt instantly by both parties? She walked straight up to me and yanked my hand out of Lucian’s grip, pulling me forward. What is going on?I glanced back at Raven, but she only watched silently for now.“He is the one, Alpha,” the woman said. “He is my mate.”A low chuckle escaped me

It was unusual to see a pack this unguarded. Even with Damon’s dramatic kick to their gates, not a single guard appeared. That alone unsettled all of us as we kept glancing from side to side while walking deeper into the pack.“Why haven’t we come across anybody?” I asked, the question starting to eat at me.They all looked just as confused.“I can feel them,” Lucian added, still scanning the area, “but they’re nowhere to be seen.”“Maybe they’re having some sort of party and everyone’s gathered somewhere else?” he asked, brows raised.Damon sighed. “What party could be so important that they’d leave their pack completely vulnerable?”“The mating ceremony.”The voice was calm but chill. I nearly jumped as I snapped my head toward the sound and came face to face with a young boy.“You scared the hell out of us, boy,” Lucian chirped as he detached himself from Damon’s shoulder. How did he even get there so fast?So much for a legendary warrior. “Says the one trespassing with his group.”

My eyes still stung long after we crossed the boundaries of the Rold Pack. Robin’s face kept flashing through my mind as we walked, each image threatening to break me all over again. I had run away from him again—telling myself it was to protect him, to keep him and the pack safe. But I couldn’t silence the thought that followed. What if that was my only chance to see him? What if that meeting was the one the Moon Goddess had destined for us, and I had ruined it—again?I didn’t even want to imagine how he must be feeling, knowing I had turned my back on him. I had chosen to be a coward once more.“You need to rest, Julian.”Raven’s voice pulled me from my thoughts as she stepped in front of me. I hadn’t even noticed she’d shifted back already—I’d been too consumed by my own mind.“There’s no need to stop,” I whispered. “We need to get as far away as possible.”“We’re already far enough,” Lucian said, walking up to me. “So sit your ass down and take a break instead of moping around.”B

  • The Broken Beta’s Redemption    Chapter 40

Robin’s POVI saw him.I almost didn’t believe it. I never once imagined meeting him here, the Rold Pack of all places—but there he was, standing just a few miles away from me. My eyes widened as I struggled to process it, but the moment his gaze met mine, I stepped forward without hesitation. Nothing was stopping me this time. When Alpha Levon of the Association came to deliver the news of his escape as they called it—I begged Aries to let me go after him. His words were still etched clearly in my mind.“Julian was freed from the prison,” Aries had said, joy evident in his tone. “They might call it an escape because they don’t believe anyone can be freed from that place. But I know that prison—escape is impossible. He was forgiven by the Moon and therefore released. The Elders are still searching for him and those they claim he escaped with. Any attempt from us to find him would only lead them straight to him. So we wait. We wait until he comes home on his own.”I saw the truth in hi
