LOGINHannah’s POV
By the afternoon, campus had become even busier. I was walking alone after my last class when I suddenly noticed a group of students gathered near the football field. They were cheering loudly. Curious, I slowed down. Standing in the middle of the field was a tall guy wearing a football jersey. He moved confidently, throwing the ball with ease while his teammates shouted his name. “Zachary! Zachary!” The name echoed across the field. I shifted my bag nervously on my shoulder, unsure if I should keep walking or stay for a moment. Before I could decide, a girl standing beside me noticed my confusion and leaned closer. “That’s Zachary Reed,” she said excitedly. “The star quarterback.” “Oh,” I replied softly. She smiled like she had just introduced me to someone important. “Everyone knows him,” she continued. “He’s rich, popular, and basically runs this campus. Girls are always chasing him.” I nodded slowly, not knowing what else to say. The girl studied my face for a second. “You’re new here, aren’t you?” she asked. “Yes,” I admitted quietly. “That explains it,” she said with a small laugh. “Trust me, you’ll hear his name a lot.” I gave an awkward smile, feeling slightly uncomfortable with the conversation. Talking to strangers had never been easy for me. I always felt like I might say something wrong. “He seems… confident,” I said carefully. The girl laughed. “Confident? That’s one way to put it. Most people would say arrogant.” I didn’t respond. Instead, my eyes returned to the field. He looked like someone who had everything, confidence, attention, power. The kind of person who lived in a completely different world from mine. Suddenly, I heard a loud shout. “Heads up!” Before I could react, something hard slammed into my shoulder. The impact knocked me off balance, and I fell straight to the ground with a small cry. Pain shot through my arm as my bag slipped from my shoulder and landed beside me. For a few seconds, everything felt blurry. Then laughter erupted around me. My face burned with embarrassment as I slowly looked up. Zachary was jogging toward me, the football in his hand. His teammates stood behind him, some of them smirking. Instead of concern, a small, amused smile appeared on his face. “You should probably pay attention to your surroundings,” he said casually. My heart sank. “I—I’m sorry,” I stammered, struggling to sit up. He let out a short laugh. “Sorry for what?” he replied. “You’re the one standing where you shouldn’t be.” More laughter followed. Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I quickly grabbed my bag, avoiding eye contact. My hands trembled slightly as I stood up. He didn’t offer to help. He didn’t apologize. “Next time,” he added coolly, spinning the football in his hand, “use your eyes.” Without another word, he turned and walked back toward the field. I stood there for a moment, frozen, my chest tight with embarrassment. That was the moment I realized something important. Zachary Reed wasn’t just confident. He was cruel. Zachary’s POV The ball left my hand with perfect force and curved straight across the field. “Nice throw!” Tyler shouted. I barely reacted. Compliments didn’t mean much anymore. People praised me all the time,it was expected. My attention drifted toward the fence again. The quiet girl. She was still standing there, too close to the field, talking awkwardly to another student like she didn’t belong anywhere else. She looked nervous, shifting her weight from one foot to another. Adrian tossed the ball back to me. “Think fast,” he said. I caught it easily and rolled my shoulders before throwing it again. The ball flew straight, and hit her. She dropped immediately. For a second, the field went silent. Then the laughter started. I jogged toward her slowly, spinning the football in my hand. She was sitting on the ground, clutching her shoulder like the world had just ended. Her eyes lifted to meet mine, wide and embarrassed. Instead of concern, I felt irritation. Why was she standing there in the first place? “You should probably pay attention to your surroundings,” I said flatly. “I—I’m sorry,” she stammered. I let out a short, humorless laugh. “Sorry for what?” I replied. “You’re the one standing where you shouldn’t be.” The guys behind me snickered. She quickly grabbed her bag and stood up, avoiding eye contact like she wanted to disappear. “Next time,” I added coldly, “use your eyes.” I turned and walked back toward the field without helping her. Practice continued, but Tyler jogged up beside me a few minutes later, shaking his head. “Man, that was rough,” he said. “You didn’t have to embarrass her like that.” I scoffed. “She embarrassed herself,” I replied. Adrian joined us, lowering his voice. “She looked scared, Zach.” I rolled my eyes and caught the ball again. “So?” I said bluntly. “What do you want me to do,babysit every clueless student who wanders onto the field?” Tyler frowned slightly. “It was an accident.” “No,” I corrected sharply. “It was stupidity.” The words came out cold, and I didn’t bother softening them. Adrian studied me carefully. “You’re acting like she did something personal to you.” I stopped walking and looked at him with a hard expression. “I don’t even know her,” I said. “And I don’t care to.” There was a brief silence. Tyler crossed his arms. “You’re turning into your father,” he muttered. My jaw tightened instantly. “Watch your mouth,” I said quietly, my voice dropping. Neither of them spoke for a second. I picked up the football and threw it harder than necessary, sending it flying across the field. The impact echoed loudly. “Practice,” I snapped. “Focus.” They exchanged a look but didn’t argue. As the game resumed, I tried to push the whole thing out of my mind. She was just another student. Another nobody. But for some reason, the image of her falling kept replaying in my head, and it annoyed me more than it should have.Hannah's POVThe next day was Saturday, and I didn't really have anything to do. Evelyn called and said I could take the day off today because she was taking Madison to her play date with her friends, so I had nothing to do, but I liked it. It was peaceful. And if you're asking why, it's because Tiffany was out with her tech friends — according to her she has a group thing — while Maya was on her phone doing whatever. It was quiet and peaceful until Serena barged into the room like she owned it — well, technically she does — and the first thing she said was —"We are going out." She smiled so hard it brought out the dimples I never even knew she had.I looked at her like she was dumb, then I looked at Maya, then I looked at Serena again."Are you talking to us?" I pointed to me and Maya. She looked around, then looked at me and Maya."Uhm… duh, stupid, of course I'm talking to the both of you." She went straight to my closet.I stood up from my bed to go meet her."Do you mind telling
Hannah's POVWe didn't hear from Maya until evening, and that was when Tiffany came inside the dorm room with her.To say she looked like a mess was an understatement. The makeup she put on in the morning was already smudged from crying. I've never seen Maya cry before, and I've only stayed here for like a month or two, I think. Serena was in the bathroom, and when she came out she saw Maya, and the first thing she said was —"Woow."Tiffany gave her death glares from beside Maya, but Maya didn't see. Serena composed herself and came to sit on the bean bag."How are you, Maya?" I said.Tiffany led her to her bed and went to the bathroom to freshen up. Maya looked at us."I'm so sorry guys for snapping at you guys in the morning, I just needed time to process everything," she said."It's fine, Maya," I said."Can I ask though, if you don't mind," Serena said.Maya looked like she already knew what she wanted to ask, but still asked her to go on. Serena adjusted herself on the bean bag.
Hannah's PovAfter the whole encounter at Zach's house that night, we came back to my dorm and Serena had said she was staying over because Nia had texted to tell her that her girlfriend was over and she needed some alone time, so that meant Serena had stayed over. That night we didn't even get to finish stepping foot inside the dorm room — Tiffany had bombarded us with questions, and so because I told Serena beforehand that she couldn't say anything to them, she made up with a series of answers from her head that surprisingly even Maya believed. After the whole thing we all went to bed.The next day was a Friday, and luckily for me and Serena our Jurisprudence professor wouldn't be able to come because his wife just gave birth — or at least that's what the class representative said. So basically no class for the day, because normally we would have five hours on that class. To say I was relieved was an understatement. I really can't imagine myself sitting for five hours today. Serena
Hannah's POVI told myself it wasn't a big deal.Just a notebook.Just going to pick it up.In and out.Simple.That's what I kept repeating to myself the entire morning while pretending to be focused on my reading assignment. But every time I tried to actually read the same sentence would just sit there on the page doing absolutely nothing useful.Serena noticed.Of course she noticed. She was sitting on the edge of my bed with her phone in her hand watching me turn the same page back and forth like it personally offended me."Are you going to tell me what's going on," she said. "Or are you going to keep pretending to read?""I'm reading.""Hannah. You've been on page four for forty minutes."I closed the book. She raised an eyebrow."Zachary texted me yesterday," I said carefully.Serena went very still. Then she sat up straight."I'm sorry. Come again?""He found my notebook. The one from the project meeting. He said I left it at his house."She stared at me."Zachary Reed. Texted
Hannah's POVThe next day I had to wake up very early — first reason was because I had class, and the second was because Tiffany was screaming her heart out.I woke up to see her on headsets while doing her tech thing, and it was as if she didn't care who heard her or not. It was like hearing a hawk singing, unless with Tiffany it was ten times worse. And the surprising thing was that it didn't wake Maya up — as I looked across the room she was just sleeping like an angel while I was suffering. But after like an hour or so, after I had finished bathing and all, as I came out of the bathroom she was already awake and in the middle of smacking Tiffany with her pillow and Tiffany was trying not to laugh. I looked at the situation and asked the first thing that came out of my mouth."What did she do this time?"Tiffany gasped with her hand on her heart."Oh my God… Hannah!!""What, you might've done something," I said chuckling."She threw her pen at me," Maya said."Well in my defense yo
Hannah’s POVAbout an hour later, everything had softened.Serena was on the floor with Madison, fully committed to whatever game they had created. Toys everywhere. Laughing. Madison bossing her around like she was the adult. And somehow… Serena didn’t mind.Evelyn and I were on the couch with tea between us, the atmosphere calmer now.Warm.Almost peaceful.Evelyn glanced toward them and smiled lightly.“I like how happy she is with Madison.”I followed her gaze.“She deserves it,” I said quietly. “After everything… I’m glad she’s laughing again.”That made Evelyn pause. She turned to me slightly.“Everything?”I hesitated. Then sighed. So I told her.About Serena’s father.About the call.About how quickly everything changed.Evelyn didn’t interrupt. She just listened. When I finished, she looked thoughtful.“I’m sorry she’s going through that,” she said softly. “But she seems strong.”“She is,” I nodded. “Stronger than she looks.”Evelyn smiled faintly.“I can see that.”Then she t

Hannah’s POV The next morning I woke up tired. Not sleepy tired. Mentally tired. The kind where your body got rest but your mind clearly didn’t. I stayed in bed for a few extra seconds staring at the ceiling while everything from yesterday replayed in my head. Madison. Mrs. Reed. Lunch. Wil
