Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
When I heard that, I grabbed my bag and stood up.

"Great. I'll leave right now. And since you fired me, don't forget my tripled severance."

I walked out of the company without looking back.

Once outside, I called my brother, Steven Luxton.

"Steven, cancel the partnership. Chris fired me."

Steven was shocked. "Isn't Chris your boyfriend? You two built that company when you were still in college. Why did he fire you?"

I told Steven everything that happened.

Steven slammed the table in anger.

"Break up with him. Immediately! A guy like that is trash. I'll find you someone more handsome and loyal. As for that partnership, forget it. If it weren't for you, a tiny company like his wouldn't even make it past our first round of screening."

After getting home, I still felt frustrated when I thought about all the effort I had put in.

Steven saw how down I was and read my mind instantly.

"Janet, come to my company. You can handle this partnership yourself. Get familiar with the place. You own shares in the company, anyway. Once you settle in, you get to choose whoever you want to work with."

I thought for a moment and agreed.

In the blink of an eye, it was the day of the Luxton Group bidding meeting.

The moment I walked in, I saw Chris with his arm around Shirley's waist. When he spotted me, he looked annoyed.

"Janet, you're not the project lead anymore. How do you even have the nerve to show up?"

Shirley looked at me with open mockery. "Janet, didn't you say you were leaving the company? Why are you still here?"

I shot them a cold look. "This isn't your company. Why can't I be here?"

Chris snorted. "Janet, if not for using our company's name, you wouldn't even get through Luxton Group's front door. Leave before security drags you out and embarrasses you."

I rolled my eyes and was ready to walk away, but Chris grabbed me and threw me onto the floor.

"Security! Why is just anyone allowed inside?"

The guards came running.

"This woman is pretending to be from our company and causing trouble. Get her out!"

I quickly explained, "There's been a misunderstanding. I'm the project lead representing Luxton Group."

Chris let out a mocking laugh.

"Are you still lying? You just left our company and suddenly became Luxton Group's project lead? Who do you think you are? As if Luxton Group would ever want you!"

As I was thrown out the front door, people whispered around me.

I snorted and sat down right outside. I'd like to see how they planned to hold the meeting without me.

Inside the Luxton Group conference room, ten minutes passed. Chris asked the executive staff member when the meeting would begin.

The executive staff member frowned.

"Our project lead isn't here yet."

Another thirty minutes went by before he spoke again.

"Didn't Ms. Saunders say she arrived early? Why isn't she here yet?"

Someone suggested calling to check. I was sipping coffee at the cafe downstairs when the call came in.

Hearing the question, I said calmly, "Oh, I was thrown out. I'm at the cafe downstairs."

A few minutes later, Chris and the others rushed in. Their faces were drenched in sweat.

Shirley stood in front of me with a smug look."Janet, Chris treats you so well. How could you cheat on him? Is it because he gave me the project lead instead? But it's his company. He has the right to do that."People around us started pulling out their phones to record the commotion.Suddenly, Riley noticed the ring on my hand. Her expression darkened, and she stepped forward and pried my hand open. She yanked my hair violently and snarled, "You still dare say you didn't seduce my boyfriend? I've seen this ring in his photos before. It's for his true love. Who do you think you are to wear it, you homewrecking tramp?"Shirley moved closer to Riley and fanned the flames."Janet used to live in poverty, and now she's decked out in designer brands. Looks like she chose the wrong path to live the good life. Janet, why don't you apologize to Riley? After all, you seduced her boyfriend first. If you apologize properly, I'm sure Riley won't go too far with you."Riley towered over me

I glared at the woman and pushed her away."What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you hitting me?" I snarled. The woman reached for my hair. "Why?! You really have the nerve to ask why? You tried to seduce my boyfriend!"I kicked her off me. "What are you talking about? I don't know your boyfriend. You've clearly got the wrong person."Shirley hurried to help the woman up."Riley, are you okay?" she asked. Riley Schubert shook her hand and stared at me like she wanted to tear me apart."My boyfriend is Steven Luxton, the CEO of Luxton Group. Now, tell me again you have nothing to do with him. You home‑wrecking wretch, I ought to beat you to death!"The moment she said Steven's name, I finally put the pieces together. Riley had to be Steven's girlfriend. Steven really had terrible taste. Of all people, he picked a woman who couldn't tell right from wrong.I opened my mouth to explain. "I do know Steven Luxton. He's…"Smack! Before I finished, Chris stormed over and slap

Shirley gave me a look that implied a hidden meaning."Janet, you're not holding a grudge and targeting our company on purpose, are you? If that's the case, I'm willing to apologize. I can even quit if you want. Please don't go after our company. So many people have poured their hearts into it."The moment Chris saw Shirley looking wronged, he blew up."Janet, that's enough! Stop messing around and just sign the contract. You can come back to our company after this. You'll still be the project lead on everything after that."I was completely done. I turned to Mr. Layton."Mr. Layton, from now on, I don't want to see them anywhere near Luxton Group. Luxton Group will cut ties with any company that works with them as well."Right after I said that, Chris threw a fit."Janet, who do you think you are? You're just a project manager! What right do you have to blacklist our company on behalf of Luxton Group?" he roared. I didn't bother arguing. Instead, I turned and walked away. T

When Chris saw me, he walked over with an annoyed look on his face."Janet, you still have the nerve to be here? Get out! If you ruin our partnership with Luxton Group, I swear I won't let you off."He looked around the shop, and when he saw that the only person there besides me was the staff, he turned to the executive staff member."Mr. Layton, didn't you say the project lead was here? Where is she?"Mr. Layton shoved Chris aside and walked toward me with an apologetic expression. "Ms. Saunders, why are you out here? Why didn't you go inside?"I glanced at Chris briefly. "I did. They kicked me out and said they were afraid I'd mess up their collaboration with Luxton Group."Mr. Layton immediately understood. Fury flashed across his face as he glared at Chris."Ms. Saunders, causing trouble? Let me make something clear! The entire Luxton Group project moves with her word. Without her, this project doesn't go forward with anybody."Chris and Shirley stared at me in stunned sile
