2. Payday Faces

Julian had seen Tessa cry only twice in front of strangers. Tonight she hadn't cried. Somehow that felt worse.

"You never had my consent."

Her voice was still ringing through the ballroom when he reached the microphone. A hundred faces waited for him to call his wife mistaken. He could have told the room they would resolve it privately. He could have asked Tessa to step down.

Instead he said, "My wife and I disagree about the timing."

Tessa stared at him. "You still won't tell them."

"I won't turn a financing announcement into a marital argument."

"You already did. You put our wedding photograph behind you and made a stranger speak for me."

Vivian moved toward the microphone. Julian gave her a look that meant wait. He disliked being cornered, especially by the one person who knew how much he needed the room to believe in him.

"Tess," he said, "we're leaving the stage."

"Tell them whether I signed anything."

He held out his hand. "Please."

It was a hand she used to take without looking. She left it hanging between them.

"Tell them."

A phone camera focused on his face. Julian lowered his hand.

"There is no signed consent from my wife," he said. "The process is ongoing."

It was the smallest concession he could make. Tessa's expression told him she recognized it.

"But you announced that I agreed," she said.

He stepped aside so the technician could cut the microphone. It took three seconds. They felt interminable.

In the service corridor Tessa pulled the door shut behind them. There was no audience now. Julian thought that would make her reasonable.

"Do you have any idea what you just did?" he asked.

"Yes. I stopped letting you speak for me."

"You embarrassed me in front of everyone who could keep those hotels open."

"You embarrassed me in front of the people who watched me marry you."

"It isn't the same."

"I know," Tessa said. "Mine doesn't appear on a balance sheet."

Julian caught himself looking toward the ballroom doors. She saw it and laughed once, without humor.

"Even now," she said. "You're waiting for Vivian to tell you whether this conversation is costing too much."

"Vivian has worked herself sick trying to save this company."

"And I have what? Watched from a comfortable house?"

He had an answer ready. It was the one he'd used whenever she accused him of choosing work: the house, their security, everything he'd built for them. But she knew how little they'd had at the start. He remembered her kneeling beside him in the wreck of their first hotel, laughing because rain came through the ceiling and soaked their wedding plans.

"You've never had to worry about being abandoned," he said.

Tessa stepped closer. "That's exactly what I've been worrying about."

He didn't know what to do with that answer. He was certain he hadn't abandoned her. He had slept in their bed, paid attention when it mattered, remembered their anniversary most years. The fact that she now listed all the nights he'd missed as though they outweighed the life he'd given her felt like an accusation he shouldn't have to answer.

"Vivian is my friend," he said. "Nothing happened between us."

"I didn't ask whether you slept with her."

"Then what do you want from me?"

"The things you keep giving her first. Your time. Your honesty. The right to know what you're planning before everyone else does."

He looked at Tessa's mouth. She was close enough to kiss. A part of him believed that if he touched her, this would stop being a public disaster and become a fight between people who loved each other. They had ended other arguments with their foreheads together, breathing until one of them laughed.

He reached out.

"Don't," she said.

His hand stopped inches from her face. The rejection stung harder than her words at the microphone.

"So that's it? Six years together, and you won't even let me touch you?"

"Six years together, and you still think touching me is how you avoid answering."

The door opened. Vivian appeared with a folded statement in her hand.

"Julian, the lenders are leaving. We should send a clarification before this spreads."

Tessa looked from the paper to her husband. "Did you ask her to write that already?"

"She's doing her job."

"Of course she is." Tessa swallowed. "Does she know what you promised me in our kitchen?"

Vivian didn't reply. She didn't need to. Julian felt Tessa step farther away, though neither woman had moved.

"I'll handle this," he told Vivian. She hesitated, then returned to the ballroom.

"You sent her away," Tessa said. "You expect me to be grateful?"

"I expect you to recognize I'm trying."

"Trying not to lose the investors. You haven't once asked what you did to me."

A bang of service doors interrupted them. Mateo came through carrying a tray, followed by Naomi Torres and Iris from housekeeping. Naomi held two schedules, one with three of Iris's shifts crossed out.

"Mr. Cross," Naomi said, "you've told staff the change is temporary. When are these shifts coming back?"

"We're reviewing the schedules."

"I need to know before Friday," Iris said. "My rent doesn't wait for reviews."

Mateo pressed a crumpled school-trip form flat against the tray. "My son thinks Saturday's wages will pay for this. I told him they would."

Julian recognized the shape of the problem and almost welcomed it. Rosters had dates. Orders had signatures. Someone could tell him which manager had changed the shifts without approval. It was easier than standing in a corridor with Tessa, who wanted an answer he couldn't calculate.

"Bring the changed schedules to Daniel," he said. "No promises until we know what's covered."

"You made a promise about me without asking," Tessa said. "But for them you need every fact in writing."

Naomi looked at her, then at Julian. He hated that look more than the cameras. It suggested his wife was right about something he couldn't put back into order.

Helen Park reached them before he could answer. "Your office has been instructed to withdraw the claim that Mrs. Cross endorsed the sale. It was false. The withdrawal must reach the employees and donors tonight."

"That will make the situation worse," Julian said.

"Then you should not have authorized the statement."

"You can say we haven't finished the process."

"No," Helen replied. "You will say she did not consent. If you refuse, the delegates will publish that fact themselves."

Julian saw Tessa watching him. He wanted her to acknowledge the impossible position she had created. Instead she looked as exhausted as she had the night he'd left their bedroom to help Vivian and returned to find the champagne untouched.

"Withdraw it," he told Helen. "But don't dress it up as an apology."

"The facts will be enough," Helen said.

Tessa's phone vibrated. She read the screen, then put it away. When Julian asked who had called, she looked at him as though the question belonged to a stranger.

"Come home," he said quietly. "We can fight about Vivian there."

"I don't want to fight about Vivian. I want you to stop making me fight for my place in your life."

He stepped nearer. "Don't walk away from our marriage over one announcement."

"One announcement?" Her voice shook for the first time. "Julian, I've been trying to talk to you for months. Tonight you finally listened because everyone else could hear me."

"You're punishing me."

"No. I'm choosing not to spend another night waiting for you to come home from her."

She went with Naomi. He could have followed. But the lenders were leaving, and Vivian was waiting with the statement that might still save the room.

Julian stayed where he was, telling himself he'd explain everything when Tessa calmed down.

"I'm not coming home tonight," she said without turning back.

Julian entered the cash review and found Naomi sitting beside Tessa. He stopped at the doorway. She had not answered his message about the divorce papers. The empty chair was at the far end of the table, not beside his wife. Once Tessa would have moved her papers without looking up, making space for his coffee, his coat, his hand beneath the table. She didn't even turn her head.He sat where they had left a place for him."The worker delegates have questions about the next payroll," Tessa said. She spoke to him as she might have spoken to an outside consultant. Julian had imagined she'd shout again. He hadn't imagined the sound of her no longer belonging to him.Callum, still wearing his night-shift jacket, asked when his hours would come back. "My daughter has started writing down the evenings she thinks I'll be home," he said. "I don't know what to tell her."Daniel opened a presentation. Julian could almost hear Tessa asking him to put the screen away and look at the people in fron

“No.”Tessa said it while Julian’s hand was still held open across the table. For one heartbeat it felt as if she had refused the man she once ran toward rather than a piece of paper. Her fingers shook in her lap. She looked at his initials on the draft that would blame her for withholding consent and did not reach for him.Julian looked at her as though she'd struck him. Gideon pushed his chair back. Mateo closed his eyes."For the record," Helen said carefully, "you withhold consent to this transfer?"“Yes. I will not sign away the workers’ protections, and I will not pretend I approved a decision Julian made without me.”Helen signed the suspension notice. Across the room Naomi turned her phone so the workers could read the confirmation: COVERED TRANSFER ON HOLD."Does that mean I get my Saturday shift back?" Mateo asked.Tessa looked at him. "Not automatically. I'm sorry. I stopped this sale. I didn't solve the missing money."Mateo nodded without looking relieved. He checked his

Julian was still wearing his wedding ring. Tessa watched it turn beneath his thumb while he sat across from her at the hearing, expecting her to protect him from the consequences of his own choice. On the table lay Nora Chen’s unanswered warning and the photograph of their first hotel. His arm encircled her waist in the picture. Six years later he would not even look at her unless somebody else was listening."Did you read my warning before the sale announcement?" Nora asked."Yes," Julian answered. "We were facing a financing deadline.""I warned that protected rights and shifts could disappear.""I know what the report said."Tessa remembered ironing that shirt for his birthday, before she stopped being invited into the decisions he made. “Then why use my name?”Julian met her eyes. "Because you would have stopped the deal before I could save the hotels."He sounded as if the answer should end the argument. Tessa almost wished he'd lied again. This was worse: he was telling her plai

Julian had called Tessa twice since opening the divorce petition. She hadn't answered either call. He drove to their first hotel anyway, because he could not imagine that six years of marriage could end without his wife hearing him explain. The petition said their marriage was irretrievably broken. He had read the phrase three times and still couldn't make it sound like Tessa. The other envelope contained her objection to the protected sale. She had turned the gala into two legal fights, and he was furious that she could act so certain while he was still waiting for her to come home. They had to inventory their first hotel together. Julian could have sent someone else to carry the files, but Helen required both names on the record. He came because Tessa had agreed to be there—and because it was the only hour of her life she had not refused him.Vivian texted: Dinner with the lenders is still on. We can manage this. Julian turned the phone facedown. He knew Tessa would take the message

Tessa woke reaching for the other side of a bed that was no longer hers. She was in the work apartment, fully dressed beneath a borrowed blanket. For one confused second she expected Julian to come through the door carrying coffee and asking why she'd slept without him. Then she remembered the ballroom. The microphone. His face when he'd called her betrayal an inconvenience to the business. She looked at the wedding ring she'd left beside Naomi's list of lost shifts. In six years she'd learned the names of his executives, his friends and the people who depended on their hotels. Somehow she had become the one person Julian didn't feel obliged to consult. Her phone vibrated.Julian: We need to get the financing sorted first.
