Alex’s pov

I wasn’t expecting him.

One second I was on the couch with Dennis—his head tipped back, mine rested into the kind of kiss we’d spent months not admitting amounted to more than nothing—and then the front door clicked open. I didn’t hear it at first. Until I heard a grunt.

I turned to see my father standing there with his hands crossed across his chest.

At that point, I had no idea what to do.

I slowly got to my feet as Dennis stood up with me.

“Dad?” I stuttered. “I didn’t hear you come in.”

“Yeah, you wouldn’t hear me come in when you’re busy.”

Now I was offended by the way he was acting.

“You should have called before showing up. You usually do that.”

He didn’t say hi to Dennis. Didn’t look at him. Just nodded toward the back doors.

“Garden.”

I glanced at Dennis, and saw his questioning eyes as he lifted an eyebrow. “I’ll be back,” I mouthed silently, then hurried after the storm that was my father.

The yard was beautiful. Annoyingly so. All neat little hedges and formed

Dennis’s povThe second I heard my name “Dennis?” I froze. I turned, slowly, because there was no way in hell that could possibly be right. But it was. It was him. Fred. From high school. Right there in front of me and Alex with a gleaming smile as though nothing had ever changed.“Oh my God.” Fred’s eyes were wide. “It’s been, like, forever!”I smiled so awkwardly I thought my face might split in two. “Fred. Hey. It has… Yeah. Forever.”He looked exactly the same, just older. I could see the scruff on his jaw that showed he was more matured. And that awkward hairstyle he had back then was gone as he now has a cropped hair now.I gulped hard. Of all the people to run into tonight… it had to be him.Fred glanced at Alex, then back at me, eyebrows lifting. “And who’s this?”Oh. Shit. The knot in my stomach congealed into an icy stone and dropped straight through me to the floor. I started thinking of how to introduce Alex and when I looked at Alex he had a sly grin on his face.“Uh…

Lyon’s povI pulled into the driveway that evening as I stayed in the car for a while.Without a care in the world, I got out of the car and slammed the car shut.My driver who was still inside flinched but I didn’t care.He got out and I turned to him. “Clean up the car and make sure it’s clean to be used. Inside and out. No excuses."He nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. Right away."I turned and went into my house to relax as my head was banging from what I had seen and heard today.I pushed open my door prepared for silence but Leticia’s shrill voice met my ears instead.“Who on earth let the horses near the donkeys? Can I just say, I did not raise idiots?!”I rolled my eyes and yanked off my dirty boots without bothering to aim as I tossed it about. The maid servants all but dove out of our way, and to be fair, I didn’t blame them. She turned to see me, her hands still resting on her curvy hips, gold bangles sliding up and down her arm as she cocked her head. “Why do you look like somebo

Dennis’s povHe laughed like I’d told a joke. “No offense, babe. It’s just—if you’re in the community, represent. Flaunt it. Be proud. Don’t just sit there looking like two straight dudes who got lost on the way to a sports bar.”Something inside me snapped then. Maybe it was the way he said babe like I should be grateful for his attention. Maybe it was how that glitter dust kept falling onto my pants over and over again. “No offense, but not all of us want to be a walking rainbow,” I said like I didn’t care how he felt.Dion raised his eyebrows. “Wow… Sure you’re even gay?”I stood.Alex blinked and also stood, a little unsure as to what I was doing. “Dennis—”“We don’t owe you anything,” I said sharply. “Not our personalities, not our wardrobes, and definitely not our validation.”Max scoffed. “It’s people like you that make the rest of us look bad. Closet-case energy.”Alex laughed, a humorless sound as he rubbed his temple, like he was trying to keep in the same tempest I was fai

Dennis’s povThe drive to the gay bar was silent as we didn’t say anything to each other. We just sat there doing nothing but staying in silence as he got to a red light and stayed. He got out his phone to type on it as I looked at him.“We need to talk about the kiss we had,” I said as he stopped typing with his thumbs. I could see him look at me out of the corner of his eye, even in the glow of his phone on his face.“What kiss?”I blinked. “Seriously? That’s the way you want to play this?” Alex sighed and leaned back in the seat before locking his phone. “Dennis, seriously. It was—ugh, I don’t know… it was just something. I guess whatever you want it to be, it was,” he muttered.I scowled at him. “So that’s how you’re gonna play this… like… what? Like a slip up?”He nodded. “Yeah. It was. It is. And it’s not gonna happen again. Let’s just focus on what we are doing and not get carried away.”I scoffed. Was he being serious? I felt stupid for even thinking we were about to be a thi

Alex’s pov“Wanna go to a gay bar?” I asked again, expecting some kind of positive reaction from him, but he instead stared at me like I was crazy. He sat up slowly, blinking at me like I’d grown two heads. “Are you crazy?”I raised an eyebrow. “What? Why would I be crazy?”“You want to go out? Now? When your dad just walked out of here, looking like he was going to punch someone?” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Jesus, Alex. I guess we’re glossing over the part where you met your father outside and haven’t said shit?”I blew out a breath. Annoyed. Frustrated. “Dennis…”“No. Don’t ‘Dennis’ me.” He stood now too, arms folding. “You don’t get to stroll up in here and act like everything’s cool and throw ‘gay bar’ out there like it’s some kind of fucking diversion.”“It is a goddamn diversion,” I growled. He was looking at me. But this time he was more than angry. Who could blame him? Things were slowly getting out of hand. One minute we were figuring shit out and the next we didn’t eve
