The reaction was immediate.

“Miss Carter.”

She turned as one of the senior staff approached her, his expression careful.

“Some of the board members are asking for clarification,” he said.

Emily nodded once. “Schedule a meeting.”

Her voice remained calm, controlled, even if everything else felt unstable.

Inside her office, the door had barely closed before her phone started ringing. Calls, messages, notifications—all at once, overlapping, demanding attention.

She ignored most of them.

Until one name stood out.

Her father.

Emily stared at the screen for a moment before answering.

“Dad.”

There was no response at first.

Then, “What exactly did you do?”

No greeting. No warmth.

Just pressure.

Emily closed her eyes briefly. “I made a decision.”

“A public one,” he replied sharply.

“Yes.”

A pause followed, heavy and deliberate.

“Do you understand what this does to the company?”

Her grip tightened slightly around the phone. “Yes.”

“Then explain it to me.”

His tone didn’t soften.

Not even a little.

Emily exhaled slowly. “It stabilizes it. The rumors were the problem. Now there’s clarity.”

Silence.

Then, “That’s not what I’m seeing.”

Her chest tightened.

“It removes uncertainty,” she continued. “That’s what investors need.”

“And if that clarity works against us?”

“It won’t.”

“You sound very sure.”

“I am.”

Silence followed again.

Then her father exhaled. “That confidence better be justified.”

“It will be.”

Another pause.

“This isn’t just business anymore, Emily.”

Her chest tightened. “I know.”

“Then don’t let it become a liability.”

The line went dead.

Emily lowered the phone slowly.

That wasn’t approval.

That was a warning.

A knock came at the door.

“Come in.”

Daniel stepped inside. He didn’t sit, didn’t try to make this casual.

“It’s getting worse,” he said.

Emily looked at him. “How?”

“Mixed reactions,” he explained. “Some investors are reassured. Others think it’s reckless.”

A pause followed.

“And Lena?”

Daniel’s expression darkened slightly. “She’s not staying quiet.”

Of course she wasn’t.

“What did she do?” Emily asked.

“She gave an interview.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“About you,” he added.

Silence filled the room.

“What did she say?”

Daniel hesitated briefly. “That your judgment is compromised. That personal involvement is affecting business decisions.”

Emily’s jaw tightened.

“And Adrian?”

“She implied he’s manipulating the situation.”

That hit harder than expected.

Emily stood slowly. “She’s pushing the narrative.”

“Yes,” Daniel said. “And it’s working.”

Silence followed.

Because that was the real problem.

Truth didn’t matter.

Perception did.

Across the city, Adrian was already dealing with it.

The meeting room was filled with board members, executives, and legal advisors. The tension was obvious, heavy in the air.

“Contain it,” one of them said.

“It’s already out,” another added.

Adrian didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t show frustration.

But his presence alone shifted the room.

“We don’t contain it,” he said.

Silence followed.

“We control it.”

A pause.

“How?” someone asked.

Adrian’s expression didn’t change.

“By proving it’s not a weakness.”

Back at Carter Group, Emily stood by the window, staring out at the city.

Thinking.
