The air in the executive suite seemed to drop twenty degrees in a single second.

I stood frozen, the heavy brass doors of the private elevator reflecting the pale shock etched across my face. Julian Vance stood there, leaning casually against the doorframe with his hands tucked into his tailored trouser pockets, looking like a wolf who had just cornered a wounded fawn.

"What did you just say?" Alexander’s voice wasn't loud. It didn’t need to be. It was a low, terrifying rumble that carried the sheer weight of a collapsing glacier. The relaxed, triumphant smirk vanished from his face, replaced instantly by the lethal focus of a apex predator whose territory had just been breached.

Julian didn’t flinch. He adjusted his silk tie, stepping further into the office while casting a dismissive glance down at Max and Lily, who were still clinging tightly to my skirt. "Good morning, Sterling. I’d say congratulations on the impromptu engagement, but it looks like your new secretary comes with quite a bit of baggage. Specifically, a bankrupt father who handed over his controlling shares of Mercer Technologies to my holding firm at 8:00 AM sharp."

My knees buckled slightly, but Alexander’s grip on my wrist—still locked in his firm grasp—kept me upright.

"That's impossible," I gasped, my voice cracking as tears of pure rage and panic pricked the corners of my eyes. "My father is unconscious in an ICU bed! He couldn't sign anything! You forged those documents, Julian, just like you forged the embezzlement reports!"

Julian let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Forged? My dear Chloe, everything is legally binding and notarized by a doctor of your father's choosing. The man realized his empire was crumbling and preferred to sell to me rather than watch his precious daughter clean toilets for a living."

"Enough," Alexander commanded. The single word cracked through the room like a whip.

Alexander stepped in front of me, placing his broad shoulders squarely between Julian and myself. The protective, possessive barrier he formed was instantaneous, though I knew it wasn't out of affection—it was because Julian was stepping onto Alexander's turf, and Alexander Sterling did not share his prey with anyone.

"You bypassed three layers of my private corporate security to hand-deliver a piece of garbage to my office, Vance," Alexander said, his ice-blue eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "That doesn't make you a clever businessman. It makes you a trespasser with a death wish."

Julian’s smile faltered just an inch at the raw, unfiltered menace radiating from Alexander. "Careful, Sterling. The board of directors won't look kindly on you marrying a woman whose family is tied up in federal fraud investigations—let alone taking on her liabilities."

"My liabilities," Alexander said slowly, stepping closer to Julian until the other man was forced to take a hesitant step backward toward the elevator, "are strictly my business. And as of sixty seconds ago, Ms. Mercer is no longer just my secretary. She is my fiancée. Which means anyone trying to tear down her family is declaring war on Sterling Enterprises."

My breath hitched. Even though I knew the engagement was nothing more than a cold, calculated contract born of desperation, hearing Alexander claim me with such absolute authority sent a wild, traitorous thrill racing through my veins.

Julian’s eyes darted between Alexander and me, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossing his sharp features. He scoffed, clutching the black leather folder tighter to his chest. "We'll see how long that bravado lasts when the public finds out you've tied your multi-billion-dollar dynasty to a sinking ship. Enjoy your bride, Sterling. You're going to need her."

With a sharp pivot, Julian stepped back into the private elevator. The doors slid shut with a soft, ominous click, sealing him away as the digital floor counter began ticking downward.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

I slowly pulled my wrist out of Alexander’s grip, rubbing the spot where his fingers had left a warm, tingling impression. My chest rose and fell in jagged, shallow breaths as the adrenaline slowly drained out of my system, leaving behind a cold, hollow ache.

"Daddy," four-year-old Max piped up, breaking the heavy tension. He tugged gently on the hem of Alexander's dark trousers, looking up with wide, innocent eyes. "Is the bad man gone? Did we win?"

Alexander looked down at his son, the lethal edge in his posture softening by a fraction. He exhaled a long, measured breath, running a hand through his dark hair before crouching down to Max’s eye level.

"Yes, Max. The bad man is gone," Alexander murmured, his voice surprisingly gentle as he straightened his son's collar. He then looked over at little Lily, who was still hiding half behind my legs, sucking her thumb with wide, fearful green eyes. Alexander stood up and turned his full, unblinking gaze back onto me.

"You heard him," Alexander said flatly, his CEO mask firmly back in place. "Julian has the shares. That means if we don't move faster than his legal team, your father loses everything by sunset, and your family's name is permanently erased."

I swallowed hard, lifting my chin despite the humiliation burning in my throat. "I signed your contract, Mr. Sterling. I’m ready to pay whatever price you're asking. But if we're going to fight Julian Vance, I need to see my father first. I need to know he's safe."

Alexander stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, weighing my words, calculating the risk, testing my resolve. Finally, a slow, grim nod cut through the air.

"Fine," Alexander said, turning back to his desk to retrieve his custom car keys and tailored overcoat. "We go to the hospital. But pack your bags first, Chloe. Because the moment we step out of that ICU, you and your niece are moving straight into my estate. And you aren't leaving my sight again."

Before I could process the full weight of his command, Max let out a loud cheer, throwing his small hands in the air. "Yay! We're moving in! Come on, Lily, let's go help Mommy pack!"

I stared at the little boy in utter disbelief, my heart hammering against my ribs. Mommy. He had said it so naturally, as if this trap we had just walked into was the most obvious thing in the world.

Alexander glanced at me, a faint, humorless smirk playing on his lips. You heard my son, Mrs. Sterling. Don't keep your new family waiting."

He strode past me toward the private elevator, his long stride commanding the room, leaving me standing amidst the shattered remnants of my old life. I looked down at little Lily, who flashed a gap-toothed smile, completely unaware that our lives had just been bartered away to the most dangerous man in New York.

As the elevator chime rang out, signaling the doors to open for our departure, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.

With shaking fingers, I pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was an unknown number, displaying a single, chilling text message:

Tick-tock, Chloe. Your father's life support is now under my remote control. Cooperate with Sterling, and he lives another day.

A cold sweat broke out across my back. Julian hadn't just stolen my father's company—he had infiltrated the hospital's digital network. He was watching our every move.

"Chloe," Alexander’s deep voice echoed from the open elevator doors, interrupting my panic. He was standing there, watching me with sharp, piercing eyes that missed nothing. "Are you coming, or do I need to carry you?"

I locked my phone screen, shoved it deep into my pocket, and forced every ounce of fear down into the darkest corner of my soul. I took a deep breath, grabbed Lily’s tiny hand, and walked forward into the lion's den.

"I'm right behind you, Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice steadier than I felt.

The elevator doors slid shut behind us with a heavy, metallic thud, plunging us into temporary darkness before the car plummeted downward toward the lobby. But as Alexander stepped closer to me in the confined space, his shoulder brushing against mine with deliberate, magnetic heat, I realized something terrifying.

Julian Vance thought he had trapped us. But standing here in the dark with Alexander Sterling, I wasn't entirely sure who was the hunter and who was the prey.

The car glided smoothly past the twentieth floor, the digital display glowing a bright, bleeding red.

Suddenly, the elevator lurched violently with a sickening metallic screech, plunging downward three full floors before slamming to an emergency halt with a jarring impact that knocked Lily off her feet and sent her straight into my arms.

The lights flickered overhead, buzzing furiously before dying out completely, plunging the car into pitch blackness.

Before I could even scream, the emergency backup generator kicked in, bathing the elevator interior in a harsh, sickly crimson emergency light. And right there, glowing on the digital panel above the control buttons, was a message typed out in bold, flashing letters:

GOING DOWN?

I froze, my blood running utterly cold as Alexander instantly threw his body in front of the children, his hand diving beneath his suit jacket to grip the heavy, cold steel of a concealed firearm.

"Stay behind me," Alexander snarled, his voice dropping into a lethal, feral register I had never heard before.

Before I could reply, the steel roof of the elevator car above us groaned, rivets popping with a deafening screech, as something heavy slammed down onto the top of our carriage.
