The deafening crunch of crumpling metal echoed inside the elevator shaft, vibrating right through the soles of my shoes. Lily let out a pierced, terrified shriek, burying her face into the crook of my neck. I squeezed her so tightly my arms trembled, pulling Max into my side with my free arm.

Above us, the steel ceiling panel buckled downward with a sickening screech. Dust and metal shavings rained over our heads.

Alexander was already moving. In one fluid, practiced motion, he cleared the space between us, shielding all three of us with his massive frame. His left hand smashed against the emergency stop override on the wall panel, while his right hand held a matte-black firearm leveled straight up at the sagging ceiling hatch. The crimson emergency lights illuminated the cold, deadly focus in his ice-blue eyes.

"Don't make a sound," Alexander growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly whisper.

For three agonized seconds, nobody breathed. The air in the shaft felt heavy, thick with the sharp smell of ozone and burning rubber.

Then, a low, metallic clatter echoed from the top of the car, followed by the heavy thud of footsteps moving across the roof.

Clang. Clang.

Max pressed himself closer to my leg, his small fingers digging into my skirt, but he didn't cry. The four-year-old was staring up at his father with wide, trusting eyes, absorbing Alexander's absolute composure.

"Sterling!" a muffled, distorted voice shouted down from the hatch above. "You have five seconds to push the girl out of the elevator, or I cut the primary cables!"

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Julian's mercenaries. They weren't just trying to intimidate us; they were actively trying to execute a hit in broad daylight inside Sterling Enterprises.

"Who hired you?" Alexander demanded, his voice echoing off the steel walls without a single trace of fear. "If it's Vance, double his price. I’ll quadruple it right now into an offshore account."

A harsh laugh rasped through the ceiling panel. "Vance pays in cash, Sterling. You pay in empty promises. Time's up."

The sound of a motorized high-speed saw whined to life above us, sending a shower of bright white sparks cascading down through the cracks in the hatch.

"Chloe," Alexander snapped, not taking his eyes off the ceiling. "Hold on to the children. Stand in the back corner."

"Alexander, what are you doing—"

Before I could finish, Alexander raised his weapon and fired three rapid shots straight up through the steel roof hatch.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The thunderous roars inside the enclosed elevator car were deafening. Lily screamed, hiding her face completely in my shirt, while I stumbled back against the mirrored wall, holding both kids close to my chest.

A sharp yell rang out from above, followed by a heavy thud as a body hit the top of the elevator. The whining saw clattered against the roof before tumbling down through the hatch, crashing onto the carpeted floor of the elevator car with a loud metallic bang.

Alexander didn't hesitate. He grabbed the emergency manual crank located beside the wall panel and shoved it into the mechanical release slot. His forearms strained against his Italian suit jacket, muscles flexing with explosive power as he yanked the heavy lever downward.

With a mechanical groan, the emergency brakes unlocked, and the elevator car dropped another six feet with a sharp jerk before slamming to a permanent stop at the eighteenth floor. The elevator doors groaned, jammed halfway open.

"Out! Now!" Alexander barked, grabbing Max by his waist with one arm and sliding his free hand around my waist to haul me through the narrow gap between the heavy steel doors.

We burst into the vacant, half-renovated eighteenth floor. The area was silent, lit only by the pale afternoon light filtering through large glass windows. Construction plastic hung from the ceiling, fluttering softly in the breeze.

Two heavily armed security guards in black Sterling Enterprises tactical gear sprinted down the concrete hallway, weapons drawn.

"Sir!" the lead guard yelled, dropping to one knee to form a perimeter. "The building perimeter has been breached from the roof line! Primary security has called SWAT!"

"Get my son and Ms. Mercer’s niece into the armored SUV in the underground bay immediately," Alexander ordered, his tone authoritative and sharp. He handed Max over to the guard without a second's hesitation, though his eyes lingered on his son for a microsecond to ensure he was unhurt. "Full lockdown protocols. No one enters or leaves this perimeter without my personal biometric authorization."

"Daddy!" Max protested, reaching out his small hand as the guard scooped him up. "Where are you going?"

"I have to take care of business, Max," Alexander said, his voice instantly softening as he touched his son's cheek. "Go with Chief Marcus. Take Lily. I’ll be right down."

I set Lily down, kissing her forehead quickly before handing her to the second guard. "Stay with Max, sweetie. Auntie Chloe will be right there."

As the guards rushed the children down the emergency stairwell, the heavy fire door slammed shut behind them, leaving Alexander and me alone in the dusty, quiet hallway.

I leaned back against the concrete wall, clutching my chest, trying desperately to drag air into my lungs. My legs were shaking so hard I felt like I was going to collapse.

"Are you hit?" Alexander asked, stepping close to me. He grabbed my shoulders, his hands firm and grounded as his piercing blue eyes scanned my body for any signs of injury.

"I'm fine," I breathed, my voice barely audible over the ringing in my ears. "Just... shaken. My father—Julian said he has remote control over his life support..."

Alexander’s jaw tightened, his posture hardening into pure iron. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his secure satellite phone, dialing a direct three-digit extension.

"Doctor Evans," Alexander spoke into the phone, his voice carrying the icy authority of a man who commanded billions. "This is Sterling. Transfer Arthur Mercer to my private medical suite at the estate immediately. Bring a full tactical medical transport and two armed details. If anyone attempts to intercept your ambulance, authorize lethal force."

He listened for two seconds, nodded once, and ended the call. He looked back at me, his gaze locked onto mine.

"Your father is being moved to my private residence right now," Alexander said flatly. "His life support is being switched to an air-gapped, offline server at my estate. Julian Vance can't touch him there."

A wave of intense relief washed over me, so overwhelming that my knees finally gave out.

Alexander caught me before I hit the cold floor. He slid one arm under my knees and the other behind my back, lifting me effortlessly into his arms like I weighed nothing at all.

"What are you doing?" I gasped, instinctively wrapping my arms around his neck to steady myself. The rich scent of dark espresso, expensive tobacco, and cedarwood wrapped around my senses, dizzying and intoxicating all at once.

"Saving us time," Alexander said, turning around and carrying me down the concrete corridor toward the private service stairs. "You're trembling, Chloe. And we have a tight schedule."

"I can walk—"

"You signed a contract to be my wife," he interrupted, his dark voice vibrating right through his chest against mine. "That means your safety, your health, and your family are entirely under my protection now. Get used to it."

I looked up at his sharp profile—the defined jawline, the stern mouth, the fierce focus in his eyes. He was arrogant, overbearing, and ruthless. But in the middle of a warzone, carrying me out of the fire, he was the only thin line standing between my family and total destruction.

We reached the underground parking garage five minutes later. The subterranean bay was swarming with armed guards. A fleet of three sleek, black armored Escalades stood idling, their dark tinted windows gleaming beneath the bright overhead lights.

Chief Marcus opened the rear door of the center vehicle. Inside, Max and Lily were sitting in the middle captain's chairs, eating juice boxes provided by the security detail, looking completely unbothered by the chaos.

Alexander set me down carefully on the plush leather seat beside the children before climbing in after me. The heavy armored door slammed shut with a solid, pressurized thud, cutting off the noise of the garage completely.

The motorcade surged forward, roaring up the concrete ramp and bursting out into the bustling streets of Manhattan.

"Where are we going?" I asked, looking out the blacked-out window as the city buildings blurred past. "The hospital?"

"No," Alexander said, opening his tablet and rapidly typing out commands. "The hospital transfer is already underway. We are going straight to the Sterling Estate in Upstate New York."

He looked up from his tablet, his ice-blue eyes fixing on mine with an intensity that made the small cabin feel suddenly claustrophobic.

"You're going to pack your life into two suitcases," he continued, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "By eight o'clock tonight, our legal team will have the marriage certificates filed. By nine o'clock, you will be sitting at my dinner table as Mrs. Sterling. And tomorrow morning, we begin the public phase of our arrangement."

I swallowed hard, looking down at my hands. "What public phase?"

Alexander leaned closer, his broad shoulder pressing against mine as his hand reached out, catching my chin between his thumb and forefinger, forcing me to look up into his eyes.

"Julian Vance wants to play games in the shadows," Alexander murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across my lower lip, sending an electric shock straight down my spine. "So we are going to give the media the show of the century. We're hosting an emergency engagement gala tomorrow night."

He tilted his head, a cold, dangerous smirk playing on his lips.

"And you, my lovely fake wife, are going to look so wildly in love with me that Julian will burn his entire company to the ground trying to figure out where he went wrong."

Before I could reply, the driver hit the brakes hard, bringing the heavy SUV to an abrupt halt at the massive iron gates of the Sterling Estate.

As the gates slowly creaked open, my phone chimed in my lap with a new notification. I glanced down at the screen.

It was a photo sent from an unknown encrypted address.

My heart stopped.

The image showed the exterior of the Sterling Estate, taken from high above—framed directly through the crosshairs of a long-range sniper scope, with a bright red laser dot centered squarely on the rear window of our car.

And below the picture was a single line of text:

Welcome to your new home, Mrs. Sterling. Make sure you look out the window tonight.
