The red alarm text pulsed softly on the monitor screen, illuminating Leo’s calm face.

Victoria walked over to the desk, her eyes narrowing as she read the encrypted code on the monitor. Melanie Vance was desperate. Stripped of her status, her luxury lifestyle, and her position beside Ethan, she had pulled the trigger on a final, reckless act of vengeance.

"She used a offshore shell company to transfer two million dollars to the Black Viper syndicate," Leo explained, clicking his mouse to pull up the wire transfer path. "The hit is scheduled for 8:30 AM tomorrow morning, right before you enter the Vance Enterprise headquarters."

Mark stepped into the study, his face dark. "Boss, I’ve already dispatched our elite security detail to track Melanie’s location. We can intercept the contract before—"

"No," Victoria interrupted softly, her voice cool and calculating. "Let the contract stand."

Mark blinked in surprise. "Boss?"

"Melanie wants a show? I’ll give her one," Victoria said, a cold, elegant smile touching her lips. "If we stop her now, she’ll hide in the shadows forever. But if she moves tomorrow, she’ll walk straight into her own trap. Leo, re-route the syndicate’s tracking ping. Make sure Ethan’s private security network picks up the signal."

Leo smirked, his little fingers flying across his keyboard. "Done. Dad’s security team just got an 'anonymous tip' about an active hit contract on the Sterling Group CEO. In three... two... one."

Across the city, inside the top-floor office of Vance Tower, Ethan slammed his hands onto his desk.

"What do you mean there's a hit contract?!" Ethan roared at his head of security.

"President Vance, our internal firewall just intercepted a dark-web alert," the security chief reported, sweating profusely. "An anonymous source leaked the transaction details. A two-million-dollar bounty has been placed on Victoria Sterling’s life for tomorrow morning at the entrance of our building. The buyer's account traces back to Miss Melanie's private offshore fund."

Ethan’s eyes flared with a terrifying, deadly rage. "Melanie..."

He picked up a heavy crystal glass from his desk and hurled it against the wall, shattering it into a thousand sharp pieces.

"Deploy every single operative under the Vance security banner," Ethan commanded, his voice trembling with a mix of fury and intense fear for Victoria's safety. "I want the entrance of Vance Tower locked down tighter than a military base tomorrow. If a single hair on Victoria’s head is harmed, I will personally wipe every person involved off the face of the earth!"

"Yes, sir!"

Ethan turned toward the glass window, looking out over the city lights. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. Five years ago, he failed to protect her. He let her walk out into the storm alone, pregnant with his children.

*Not tomorrow,* Ethan swore to himself, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned white. *Even if I have to block a bullet with my own body, no one touches my wife.*

***

The next morning, 8:15 AM.

The plaza in front of Vance Enterprise headquarters was packed with hundreds of reporters, news anchors, and financial analysts. Cameras flashed relentlessly under the bright morning sun. This was the most anticipated business event of the decade: the return of the Sterling Group and the high-stakes merger that would decide the fate of Ethan Vance's empire.

At 8:25 AM, a fleet of ten sleek black Maybachs pulled up to the red carpet in front of the tower.

Dozens of heavy-set bodyguards in black suits immediately spilled out, forming a tight security perimeter around the lead vehicle. Ethan Vance stepped out of his custom SUV nearby, his sharp blue eyes scanning the surrounding rooftops with hyper-vigilance. His tactical team was already in position, but his heart wouldn't calm down.

The door of the center Maybach opened.

Victoria stepped out.

She wore an ivory-white designer dress suit paired with sharp stiletto heels, looking like an absolute queen inspecting her domain. Beside her walked Mark, carrying her executive briefcase.

The reporters went wild, camera flashes erupting like lightning bolts.

"Miss Sterling! Is it true the Sterling Group intends to execute a hostile takeover of Vance Enterprise?!"

"Miss Sterling, look over here!"

Victoria ignored the noise, walking with complete grace toward the entrance. As she crossed the plaza, her eyes locked onto Ethan, who was striding directly toward her with an expression of intense anxiety.

Suddenly, a high-pitched mechanical beep echoed from a nearby parked delivery van.

*Click.*

High up on the third-floor balcony of a building across the street, a figure dressed in construction gear leveled a suppressed rifle directly at Victoria’s chest.

"Target spotted," the assassin whispered into his comms. "Executing now."

"Victoria! Get down!" Ethan’s panicked scream echoed across the entire plaza.

Before anyone else could react, Ethan threw himself forward, sprinting at terrifying speed. He lunged across the distance separating them, wrapping his arms around Victoria’s waist and slamming his body between her and the sniper's line of fire.

*Thwack!*

A silent high-caliber round tore through the air, embedding itself deep into the heavy marble pillar right behind where Victoria had been standing a microsecond before.

Screams erupted through the crowd as reporters scattered in pure panic.

Ethan brought Victoria safely down to the ground, shielding her completely with his body. He held her tight, his chest heaving violently, his arms trembling as he squeezed her against him as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.

"Are you hurt?" Ethan gasped, his voice cracked with raw terror as he checked her face, her hands, her shoulders. "Victoria, look at me! Are you hurt?!"

Victoria lay in his arms, staring up into his bloodshot eyes. She could feel his heart hammering wildly against her chest, feeling the genuine, overwhelming terror in his touch. For a fraction of a second, the cold ice around her heart flickered.

"I'm fine, Ethan," Victoria said quietly, her voice smooth and unbothered.

Before Ethan could breathe a sigh of relief, Mark stepped up, pointing toward the delivery van across the plaza. Vance security guards and Sterling operatives had already surrounded the vehicle, dragging out a terrified, weeping woman in handcuffs.

It was Melanie.

Ethan slowly stood up, pulling Victoria up with him while keeping a protective arm around her waist. He glared at Melanie with eyes cold enough to freeze hell itself.

Melanie struggled against the guards, her hair disheveled, screaming frantically, "She stole my life! Ethan, she took everything from me! She deserves to die!"

"Take her away," Ethan ordered, his voice dropping into an absolute death sentence. "Ensure she is handed directly to federal authorities for attempted murder. She will spend the rest of her life behind bars."

As the police sirens wailed in the distance, dragging Melanie away for good, the plaza settled into a tense silence.

Ethan turned back to Victoria, his hand lingering near hers, his eyes filled with five years of unspoken pain, regret, and desperate longing.

"Victoria..." Ethan whispered softly. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. But please... let me protect you and our children."

Victoria pulled her arm back smoothly, stepping out of his reach. She adjusted her white blazer, her expression returning to an unreadable, icy mask.

"Thank you for the rescue, President Vance," Victoria said formally, her voice completely detached. "However, personal matters do not belong in the boardroom. It's 8:55 AM. You have five minutes to prepare your presentation before I decide whether to bankrupt your company."

She turned and walked into the Vance Tower lobby without looking back once.

Ethan stood on the steps, watching her majestic back. A slow, determined smile broke through his pained expression.

"I don't care if it takes the rest of my life, Victoria," Ethan murmured under his breath, straightening his suit. "I'm winning you back."

The luxury Maybach glided smoothly through the capital's evening traffic, its dark-tinted windows shielding its passengers from the lingering flashbulbs of media crews outside. Inside the quiet leather interior, the air felt heavy. Chloe had already fallen fast asleep on Ethan’s lap, her small hand loosely curled around the lapel of his tailored jacket. Ethan sat remarkably still, barely daring to shift his weight for fear of waking her. His gaze remained soft as he looked down at his daughter, before quietly turning his eyes toward Victoria.Victoria was staring out the window, watching the neon city lights bleed across the glass. But her posture was rigid. "Leo," Victoria said smoothly, breaking the silence without turning her head. "Show me the message again."Leo tapped his tablet screen, projecting a holographic mirror display onto the leather panel between the front seats. The encrypted text flashed in sharp white letters:*[The old man was just the distraction. The Sterling

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush. Every eye in the gallery—along with millions of viewers watching the live stream across the country—was glued to the massive seventy-inch screen hanging above Judge Miller's bench. On the screen, four-year-old Leo had expanded the metadata logs of the leaked psychiatric reports. Bright red highlights lined the digital code, flashing line by line."As you can see on line forty-two of the file structure," Leo explained, his tiny voice surprisingly steady as he pointed a laser pointer at the monitor, "the PDF document was generated three weeks after my mother had already departed North City five years ago. Furthermore, the electronic signature attributed to Dr. Harrison of Capital General Hospital was created using an administrative software key registered directly to Vance Manor's primary server network."A loud collective gasp erupted across the gallery. Reporters scrambled to take notes, their camera shutters clicking furiously.

The atmosphere inside the courtyard of the Sterling Villa was electric with tension. Two sleek black government sedans with dark-tinted windows pulled up to the stone driveway. Four official-looking men dressed in dark suits carrying federal badges stepped out, led by a sharp-faced middle-aged man holding a red leather dossier. It was Inspector Vance-aligned Agent Harris from the Capital Child Protection Services."Under the emergency directive issued by the High Capital Court," Agent Harris announced in a cold, monotone voice as Mark stepped forward to block them, "we are authorized to conduct an immediate inspection of the living conditions, emotional state, and physical safety of the minors, Leo Sterling and Chloe Sterling."Mark crossed his arms, his massive frame completely blocking the front door. "You're five minutes away from getting your credentials revoked, Agent Harris. This is private property.""If you obstruct a federal officer, Mr. Mark," Harris smirked, holding up the

The shadow of the capital city stretched long and thin over the tarmac as Victoria’s private jet touched down. Inside the primary suite of the plane, Victoria sat in a velvet armchair, nursing a cup of black tea while reviewing the legal briefing for Friday’s hearing. Across from her, Ethan sat on the leather bench, his laptop open, his fingers typing furiously as he dispatched his private intelligence teams across the capital. For the first time in five years, they were sharing a space without screaming, but the silence between them was thick, heavy, and pregnant with unspoken tension.Suddenly, Mark stepped into the suite, his face pale and dark. He held a tablet in his hand, his eyes shifting nervously between Victoria and Ethan."Boss," Mark said, his voice unusually tense. "We have a major situation. Samuel Vance just fired his opening shot."Victoria didn't even raise her eyes from her documents. "What did the old man do?""Ten minutes ago, three major national media outlets p

The corridor of Vance Tower suddenly felt ice-cold. Victoria stopped dead in her tracks, her hand clenching the phone so tightly her knuckles turned pale. Great-Grandfather Vance—Patriarch Samuel Vance—was the true shadow ruler of the entire Vance dynasty. A ruthless, old-world traditionalist in his eighties, he cared about only one thing: the purity and continuation of the Vance bloodline. When Victoria was married to Ethan, Samuel Vance had treated her like a invisible ghost, completely ignoring her because of her modest background. Now that he knew about the twins, he was coming for them like a vulture."Leo," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. "Is the perimeter secure?""Yes, Mommy," Leo replied calmly. "Mark has already doubled the security around the villa. But the legal documents attached to the crate are real. Great-Grandfather Vance filed an emergency petition with the High Capital Court under the Ancient Family Estate Act. If we ignore it, they will

The atmosphere on the eighty-eighth floor of Vance Tower was suffocating. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the morning sky was still overcast, casting a gray shadow across the grand mahogany conference table. Inside, forty board members, chief officers, and major shareholders of Vance Enterprise sat in rigid silence. At the head of the table sat Ethan Vance. He had changed into a fresh navy suit, but the severe exhaustion beneath his sharp eyes was impossible to hide completely. His hands were clasped tightly in front of him on the table. To his right, a group of elderly board members led by Director Thomas—a long-time ally of the secondary Vance family branch—were whispering feverishly among themselves. "If this Sterling Group CEO decides not to sign today, our stock drops thirty percent by noon," Director Thomas grumbled loudly, casting a cold look at Ethan. "We shouldn't have relied on President Vance's personal connections. We should have prepared a backup acquisitio
