With Amanda gone, Lucas disappeared to the other side of the room, heading for the balcony. The restaurant had a wraparound terrace on the first floor, great for getting some fresh air.
He was thinking about what he would have to do to get Amanda to open up to him when the sound of sobbing reached him.
The lights on the terrace were muted, so he hadn't noticed he had company. He stared into the darkness in the direction the sound was coming from, trying to see who it was.
He caught the glimpse of a glint in the night, then his eyes finally adjusted and made out the woman standing several paces away.
"Hello? What's wrong?" He asked, reaching for his pocket handkerchief as he walked closer. He recognised her. She was the woman who had introduced herself to him in the elevator last week. "Ah, it's you." He pushed the handkerchief towards her. "Here, use this. It's clean."
She took the cloth and wiped below her eyes. "Thank you," she whis
On Sunday afternoon, Amanda walked out of her family home, feeling dejected.Half an hour ago, she had walked into the house, feeling optimistic. Thanks to a call from Rachel, the housekeeper, she was finally able to catch her father alone, outside work. She had hoped to make a last plea and hope that he backed off where Lemaiyan Fits was concerned."I know you feel as if you have no control over anything at the moment," he had told her, pouring her a cup of tea. "But it's only for a moment.""Why? Why now? Do you also believe that I'm not capable of running the company?"He had shaken his head. "No, of course not, dear. Amanda, you checked the reports. The board is concerned about the profit margin.""The profit margin is pretty satisfying, Dad.""It is, but it's not on par with the other companies. It could be better if you tapped into the market we're targeting with the new collection.""Dad. We a
“Welcome to my humble abode.”Amanda’s gaze moved from Lucas to the trawler docked in front of them. “You live on a boat?”Lucas nodded and stepped onto the deck. He reached his hand out and beckoned for her. “Come on.”Amanda went after him as he led the way to the door on the port side. He unlocked it and pulled it open, then stepped aside. “After you.”Amanda looked from him to the open doorway then walked forward. She went through the door and lingered there, her eyes taking in the interior. Everything was neat and in place, and there appeared to be much more space than she had anticipated. She turned back to him. “It’s so nice in here.”Lucas smiled. “Flattered you like it.”Amanda left her shoes at the door and stepped further into the room. A few seconds
Amanda kissing him was the last thing Lucas expected. But he didn’t waste a lot of time being surprised. His lips moved against hers, his hands going around her waist. She wrapped hers around his neck and pressed her body into his, closing every little distance between them. The kiss was short but intense. She pulled back first, keeping her hands around his neck. Her brown eyes sought his. “This is not a good idea for me, Lucas. Right now, I really want you. But I don’t know what I’ll think about it tomorrow.”He more than understood. She wanted him in the same way he wanted her. It just wasn’t as easy for her. And he wasn’t going to make things harder. “That’s fine. You’ll know when tomorrow comes. I’ll respect whatever you decide.”He sure as hell hoped she wouldn’t push him away. But since this was just s
“I have to leave soon, you know.”“I know.”Amanda’s lips spread into a smile when despite agreeing with her, Lucas made no move to let her go. They’d spent the entire evening in each others’ arms. Save for the short while it took Lucas to change the boat's course so they ended back at the marina. She had just woken up from a nap to find him still holding her, eyes on her face. It was past nine o’clock, time for her to retrieve her car from the parking lot and head back to her apartment. His fingers pushed back strands of her curly hair. “I wish you’d spend the night.”“Me too,” she whispered. She never wanted to leave, but she had to. The next day was Monday, and they both had work. Together. She still wasn’t sure how she was going to deal with that. Would thi
The video clip Cara sent Amanda had footage of Samuel and Nancy together, a day before Amanda cancelled their engagement. It was late at night and they were in the break room at work. The video was a mix of them making out and talking about how the wedding day was getting close and they would finally have their hands on the Lemaiyans' wealth.Cara had stayed late that night too and came across them. They never found out that she took a video. All they knew was that she saw them and ratted them out to Amanda.A few minutes after Amanda posted the clip online in reply to Nancy's tweet, her office phone rang. Her father was on the other side.“See me now, Amanda! Right now!”His voice was stern, and it was obvious he was pissed off. She could deal with an angry father. As long as she had finally put those two in their proper place, she could deal with any
Amanda downed her fourth shot and beckoned for the bartender to fill her fifth.“Girl, I think you should call it a night,” Tyra urged from beside her.Amanda shook her head, the heel of her palm resting on her temple. “Make me understand, Tyra. Dad’s making no sense.” Her listless gaze shifted to her friend. “What have I done wrong? Can you tell me what I’ve done wrong? Maybe if I fix it, he’ll not give Rebecca my company.”Tyra sighed and rubbed her friend’s shoulder. “Amanda, I’ve told you… Maybe that’s just his way of looking out for you. And he’s not giving Rebecca your company. I’m sure it’s temporary.” She shrugged. “I mean, at least he didn’t transfer the shares to her.”That didn’t make Amanda feel any good. Yes, the shares were still under her
When Lucas got to his boat, Amanda was sitting outside the door, leaning against it. To his relief, her driver was with her.“I’m sorry sir, I couldn’t get her to leave,” he apologised as Lucas came forward and unlocked his door.“It’s okay,” he assured him, bending to scoop the half-asleep woman in his arms. “Thanks for watching over her. You can leave now.”With Tom gone, he went into the boat and headed straight for the main cabin. He placed Amanda on the bed, then moved to remove her shoes.“Why are you so drunk?” he asked, casting a glance at her flushed face. She moaned and turned to her side, her eyes opening to gaze at him.Having removed her shoes, he sat down on the bed beside her. He peered down at her. “What happened?”The last time he saw her, she had successfully
“Want to talk about what happened with your father yesterday?” Lucas asked two hours later as he set a plate of breakfast in front of Amanda. They had already taken a shower and he insisted on making her breakfast before he drove her to her place.“What did I say last night?”“Something about him thinking you’re not good enough for the company.”“Oh.”“It must have been serious if you went drinking like that, right?”Amanda lifted the mug of coffee he had made her and blew across the surface. “He’s putting Rebecca in charge at the company.”“What?”She shrugged. “It’s what it is.”“He’s not giving her his shares, is he?”She shook her head. “Fortunately, n
