Ethan's POV

I stepped into my office and immediately narrowed my eyes.

Sprawled across the couch like it was his damn living room, was no other than my grandfather looking right at home.

“Well, look who it is” he grinned. “Still working at this very ungodly hour? You ever go home?”

“You showed up because you knew I’d be here,” I muttered, loosening my tie. “What do you want, Grandpa?”

“Can’t I drop by to see my one and only grandson?” he said, strolling around the room like he paid the rent.

“You’re trespassing in a private office.”

“I’m the chairman of the company.”

“I own this space.”

“And I pay your salary.”

“Still not the same thing,” I replied flatly.

He clutched his chest in mock pain. “No hug? No tea? Just attitude?”

“I’m busy.”

“Have David get it then.”

“He’s not your personal butler.”

“He’s practically family.”

I clenched my jaw. “He’s my assistant.”

Grandpa flopped down again. “Where is he, anyway?”

“He went home. Like a normal person.”

Grandpa checked his watch. “It’s nearly ten. You planning to spend the night again?”

“I said I’m busy.”

“Busy, my foot. Burnout doesn’t build empires.”

I kept my hands on the desk to stop them from balling into fists. “Say what you came to say.”

He smirked. “I heard you got dumped.”

“What?”

“Blind date girl ditched you. Said you were too intense.”

My brow twitched. “Did David tell you that?”

“Well, who else?”

“Did he also tell you I’m marrying someone else?”

“He did,” Grandpa said, voice suddenly flat. “Which only makes it worse. You’re telling me a woman agreed to marry you after one meeting?”

“Why is that hard to believe?”

“Because it’s you,” he said instantly. “And if a woman’s willing to marry someone that fast, I don’t trust her.”

“I see your bias is still strong.”

“You’re embarrassed. It’s fine. I already lined up your next blind date.”

My head snapped up. “What?”

“Next week. Creswell Holdings’ daughter.”

I blinked. “You set me up with Ken Bennett’s rival’s kid?”

“They’re reputable. Just like the Bennetts.”

He’s really doing corporate matchmaking now?

“I’m seeing someone,” I said, voice cold.

“Lying to get out of a date? Pathetic.”

“I’ll bring her this weekend.”

One brow lifted. “You serious?”

“Dead serious. Sunday. You’ll meet her yourself.”

“Didn’t you say you were dumped?”

“That was Riley. This is someone else.”

“So there really is someone. You move fast.”

“It was love at first sight.”

He stared. “You. Mr. Calculated. Fell in love at first sight? Sounds like a scam.”

“You asked. I answered.”

We stared each other down.

“…Fine,” he said finally. “I’ll play along.”

I exhaled slowly.

“But—” he added, “if you’re lying, you’ll go on the blind date and start joining me for weekly skeet shooting.”

I flinched.

“I know how much you hate shooting with me,” he chuckled. “Consider it punishment if you can’t deliver.”

“Sunday,” I said, standing. “You’ll see her with your own eyes.”

Grandpa smirked, shaking my hand. “You’d better hope she’s real. Because if you show up alone…”

He didn’t finish. He didn’t need to.

I had four days to make Harper believable enough to fool the most cunning man in New York.

And somehow… convince her to actually show up.

Harper’s POV

“Ugh! That’s the fifth egg—” I groaned, staring at the shattered yolk on the floor. “Are these things allergic to my hands today or what?”

With a sigh, I dropped into my chair and caught sight of my reflection.

One eye looked tired. The other?

Purple. Puffy. Hideous.

“Great. Real cute, Harper. Real. Damn. Cute.” I leaned closer and gently poked the bruise. “My face was all I had going for me.”

My door creaked. Jason walked in, holding a tray of fresh eggs.

“I heard cold eggs work better on bruises than ice. These just came in…” He froze. “Holy crap, it’s worse than yesterday. Are you sure you don’t wanna stay home longer? Or… maybe a hospital?”

I smiled. “Nah. It’s just a bruise. If I went in, they’d give me Tylenol and a \$500 bill. I’ll be fine by tomorrow.”

He frowned. “Sorry... I shouldn’t have let that stupid plant sit there. I didn’t even know Eric gave it to us until Riley told me.”

Right. The incident.

Chasing Riley with a broom. Knocking over the mop bucket. That bucket taking out Eric’s plant. The pot flying. Hitting my face.

Also bumping my head on the fridge right after.

Honestly, it was impressive I still had a functioning brain.

“It’s fine. I’m a tank,” I shrugged.

Still, he looked guiltier than a kid who’d broken a window.

‘I’m fine, Jason. This isn’t your fault,’ I wanted to say.

But deep down... we both knew who really needed to pay.

Riley. Freaking. Bennett.

‘She’s the real reason I look like a low-budget Halloween raccoon.’

Okay—yes, she’d been working overtime to make it up to me. But still.

DING.

I looked down at my phone and froze.

Jason darted back in. “Sis? Are you okay? Is it your eye?! Should we call someone—?”

“N-No! I’m fine!” I shoved him out. “Just, uh... give me a minute, okay? Restaurant needs you more than I do!”

He left reluctantly.

I stared at the message:

‘Ethan Reynolds:’ Confirmed the meeting with my grandfather for this Sunday. I’ll give you the time and address tomorrow.

I dropped my phone like it was radioactive.

“THIS IS NOT A WORK PROBLEM!” I howled, dragging both hands through my hair. “IT’S A FULL-BODY EMERGENCY!”

Harper’s POVRiley’s silver Mercedes came to a stop in front of GlowMira’s towering glass entrance. The sunlight glared off the building like it, too, was judging me. I sat motionless in the passenger seat, clutching my coat and shielding half my face with my hair like some kind of Victorian ghost. My dignity as well as my tolerance for chaos, had hit an all-time low.“Thanks again,” I said, attempting a grateful smile that came out more like a grimace. “Seriously, I owe you.”Riley gave me a sunny grin, completely unfazed. “Please. It’s the least I can do after... well, you know.”I sighed. “You mean after initiating the chain of events that led to me being publicly clowned, borderline blackmailed, and now forced to fake-marry a man who terrifies me with just a glance?”“Exactly! That. But on the bright side...,you’re getting chauffeured now!”I stared at her.She reached over, inspecting my makeshift face covering. “Yeah, the eye patch is... not working. Wait.” She dove into the glo

Ethan’s POVGlowMira’s hallways had always been quiet in the early morning—sterile, professional, efficient. Just the way I liked it.Until recently.I hadn’t seen her in two days—Jessica, as she introduced herself. But her image lingered. The dramatic entrance. The exaggerated voice. That absurd wig. And still, something about her was... distracting.I told her I knew the truth. That her performance was see-through from the start. The way her expression collapsed was etched into memory. Amusing, in a way."David."David looked up from his tablet. "Yes, sir?""Find me a list of trending date spots."He paused. "For… you, sir?"I didn’t look at him. "Just do it."I walked on without waiting for the reply. Behind me, I heard greetings.“Good morning, Mr. Reynolds!”I gave a nod. “Morning.”The air practically froze.“Did he just—smile?” someone whispered.“Is that allowed?”Tch. People noticed too much. All I wanted was a wife. A simple fix. Jessica had been entertaining, at least. Unpr

"Where the hell is it?!" I muttered, darting left and right like a pigeon on caffeine. Riley's hot pink wig bobbed with every step, threatening to slip off my head. My cheap dress clung to me in all the wrong places, and my heels? They were planning my murder. The crowd up ahead buzzed like bees around a hive, and that's when I spotted him—tall, sharp, already swarmed by curious onlookers.“Oh no. I’m late!”I rushed up, panting. “Y-You’re already here!”Ethan glanced down at his watch, completely unbothered. “You’re late.”I whipped out my phone. “By one minute?!”He didn’t even blink.I forced a polite smile, though behind it brewed the kind of rage only public transit delays could inspire. ‘You’ve probably never waited for a train in your life, you luxury-leather-wrapped tyrant…’“Well,” I said sweetly, “let’s blame my ‘tardiness’ on how sudden this meeting was.”“You were aware of it yesterday. Idiot.”That made my eye twitch."So why’d you want to meet?" I asked, arms crossed. He

Harper's POV“Good morning, Mr. Reynolds!” Staff chirped, bowing their heads as Ethan strode through the glass doors of GlowMira like he owned the entire city.Which, technically, he kind of did.I, however, was frozen on the sidewalk just outside the lobby, crouched behind a planter like a raccoon avoiding tax fraud.Did he leave? Is the coast clear? Can I exist without accidentally locking eyes with him again?I peeked over the ledge, and my soul nearly evaporated through my scalp.'Nope. Not clear. Ethan Reynolds, six-foot menace, has officially entered the building and hijacked my peace of mind.'At this rate, I was going to develop premature gray hair. How was I supposed to work like this? Every hallway, every breakroom coffee pot, every elevator ping sent my fight-or-flight response into full meltdown. I’d become a walking anxiety attack in heels. And to make things worse?I jabbed my phone screen in fury.Still no response.“Come on, Riley,” I muttered. “You orchestrate an iden

My phone buzzed violently, against my nightstand, shattering the last few seconds of sleep I was clinging to. I groaned blindly swiping across the sheets for it with one hand and burying my face in the pillow with the other.“What time is it…” I cracked an eye open. Pitch black. The screen glowed:4:35 A.M.What the actual hell.I finally grabbed the phone and answered, already scowling. “This better be good,” I muttered, voice gravelly. “Hello?”“Is this Miss Jessica?” a man’s voice asked smoothly. “Jessica Thompson?”I blinked. ‘Jessica, …. Who even is that?’“You’ve got the wrong number, man.” I yawned into the receiver, flopping onto my side.“The number’s correct.”“Congrats. Still not Jessica and I don’t do prank calls. Goodbye—”“Are you sleeping?” he cut in, as if I hadn’t just answered with my voice three octaves lower than usual.“Obviously.” I muttered, pulling my blanket over my head. “What kind of sociopath calls at—” I checked the screen. “—FOUR THIRTY-FIVE?!”“Are you s

“Why me?” I asked, arms crossed and brow twitching. “Out of every woman in Manhattan—why me?”Ethan didn’t even flinch. “Because I’ve seen your acting. Up close.”My mouth fell open. Was that… praise?“Is that supposed to be a compliment?” I asked, glaring at him.He blinked once. “Interpret it however you like.”Oh, I was interpreting it all right. I pressed my palms together muttering an internal prayer for patience.“You don’t want to marry me” he said, tone matter-of-fact, “and I don’t want to waste time. So, here’s the deal. Pretend to date me in front of my grandfather, and in return, I’ll pay you.”“I can’t believe you just said that!” I burst out, staring at Ethan like he’d sprouted twenty extra heads. “You want me to... to pretend to be your girlfriend? What, like fake holding hands? Fake kissing? Fake everything?”He didn’t blink, his nonchalant gaze met mine, a hint of a smirk playing on those lips. “Yes, Riley. That’s usually how fake dating works.” Sarcasm dripping with

The silence between us was oppressive. Like that moment right before the dentist drills your tooth. Or a movie villain says, "I’ve been expecting you." I stared at my fork. Ethan Reynolds sat across from me, looking exactly like the kind of man who’d build a private bunker for fun. Or file a restraining order because someone breathed too loud. And now, I was stuck here. Again. My phone vibrated against the table. Once. Twice. Then it wouldn't stop.DING. DING. DING.Ethan raised a brow. “You seem to be receiving a lot of messages. Feel free to respond.” His tone was neutral, but I heard it. That subtle, clipped sharpness like he was two seconds from tossing my phone into a vat of lava.“I-I’m fine,” I said, clutching it like a lifeline. Which, ironically, it wasn’t.Another ping. Then another.Drama Queen: Sorry, Harper. Drama Queen: Your CEO said he had to see you again. Just apologize for everything. The makeup’s perfect. HE WON’T recognize you’re his employee! My blood pressur

Harper's POVThe restaurant was beautiful.Dim lighting shimmered off gold-accented chandeliers. A live pianist played something elegant and probably French in the corner. Crystal glasses sparkled. Silverware looked like it belonged in a museum. Definitely the kind of place where salads cost more than my monthly grocery bill.I adjusted my jacket, stepping inside. My eyes swept the room—until they landed on a familiar tornado of jewelryAcross the room, I spotted Riley waving wildly at me, her jewelry flashing under the chandeliers."Harper! Over here!" she called.I made my way over, trying not to trip on the fancy carpet."What's the occasion?" I asked, sliding into the booth. "Did you finally land the deal you were working on?"She flinched."Uh, well... not exactly." She shoved a menu into my hands. “I just thought I owed you. Y’know. For everything.”Her voice cracked halfway through the sentence. My eyes narrowed."Thank me? For what? I already paid my dues — remember the last b
