Chapter 6

Author: Henderson
His tone was gentle, as if he were thinking of her in every way.

But Lizzie knew him too well.

Those words were nothing more than a way to ease his own faint sense of guilt.

He was certain she would, as always, be sensible enough to refuse.

“Sure,” Lizzie said.

“Hm? What did you say?” Nathan froze for a moment, not quite processing it.

“I said sure. I’m almost fully recovered. It might be nice to meet your friends.”

Lizzie smiled.

After all, there probably wouldn’t be another chance to see them again.

The next evening, at a private club.

The spacious, well-appointed main hall was open to all members. The lighting was dim, rows of liquor bottles lined the walls, reflecting a warm golden glow.

Further inside were the exclusive VIP rooms.

Lizzie walked in beside Nathan.

She wore a simple beige knit dress, her makeup light and understated.

As the private room door opened, laughter and chatter spilled out.

“Nathan’s here? Oh, you brought someone tonight?”

Someone recognized Lizzie. “This must be Mrs. Hall?”

Lizzie smiled and nodded. “Hello, everyone.”

“You look even better in person than in photos.”

Someone looked her over. “Though there really is a resemblance.”

The moment those words fell, the air stilled for a beat.

Nathan’s brows drew together slightly as he glanced at the speaker.

The man had been drinking and seemed to realize something, letting out an awkward laugh. “I was complimenting her, Nathan. You’ve got great taste.”

Another chimed in with a teasing grin. “Come to think of it, right after Sharon left back then, you suddenly got married. And for three years, you kept your wife completely out of sight. We all thought you…”

He paused, his smile turning suggestive. “Never mind, better not say it.”

Laughter rose again, now tinged with a hint of gossip-fueled excitement.

Lizzie heard every word clearly.

Her expression didn’t change.

She simply lowered her gaze, picked up a glass, and poured herself some lemon water.

Nathan didn’t deny it.

He only frowned and said, “Drink less.”

“What does Mrs. Hall do?” a woman asked, lifting her chin slightly. “I heard she studied art?”

“I used to,” Lizzie replied smoothly. “Now I stay at home.”

“Staying at home is hard work too,” someone chimed in to ease the tension.

“Taking care of someone like Nathan, a total workaholic, must be exhausting. He’s always had high standards for the people around him.”

“Exactly.” Another laughed. “Who doesn’t know what he used to be like? It was always either the company or Sharon.”

“I still can’t believe one flew overseas, and the other suddenly got married.”

They joked as they spoke, deliberately glancing at Lizzie, as if waiting to see her discomfort.

Lizzie met their gazes openly, even feigning curiosity, as though she wanted to hear more.

Beneath the cover of her sleeve, she quietly turned on the voice recorder on her phone.

If they wanted to talk, she’d let them talk more.

Nathan took her reaction as an act of composure.

He seemed about to explain something, his lips parted slightly, but the movement at the door interrupted him.

“She’s here, she’s here.”

Someone stood up. “The main guest has arrived.”

Sharon stood at the doorway, dressed in a simple monochrome outfit with a cashmere shawl draped over her shoulders.

Her softly curled hair was loosely pinned up, revealing the slender line of her pale neck.

She greeted everyone in the room with easy familiarity before someone pulled her over to sit at Nathan’s right.

Lizzie sat on his left.

Someone suggested a round of drinks.

Sharon hesitated, her tone slightly flustered. “I don’t drink.”

“Come on, Sharon. Weren’t you a good drinker before?”

“I stopped after going abroad. I really can’t drink anymore.”

The other person was about to press further.

Nathan immediately took the glass from her hand, his tone firm. “If she’s not drinking, I’ll drink for her.”

“Oh? Nathan, that’s what I call a real man—covering someone else’s drink means you take double,” someone jeered playfully.

Another glanced at Lizzie. “Mrs. Hall, why don’t you have a drink? It’s not every day we get to meet you.”

Lizzie didn’t respond.

Nathan said casually, “Liz, have a few drinks with them. It’s your first time meeting everyone. Don’t spoil the mood.”

“Mrs. Hall, come on, just one!”

The room erupted into cheers, urging her on.

Lizzie curled her lips into a polite smile. “Sorry, I’ve had a cold these past few days. I took some medicine before leaving the house.”

She gently pushed the glass back. “You all go ahead.”

Then she stood, her movements unhurried. “I’ll step out to the restroom.”

She turned and walked out of the private room, closing the door behind her.

The noise and music were instantly cut off, leaving the hallway in quiet contrast.

She stood in the restroom.

In the mirror, the smile faded from her face, leaving behind an expression so calm it felt almost unfamiliar.

Her phone vibrated.

[Victoria: The documents are almost fully organized. We can initiate legal proceedings anytime.]

Lizzie looked at the message, her fingers tapping lightly against the screen.

Back at the door of the private room, cheers erupted from inside. “Kiss! Kiss!”

“Nathan, give us a kiss!”

She stood outside the door and replied to Victoria: [Alright. I’m ready too.]

She jolted in shock. Before Lizzie could react, a sudden, overwhelming presence closed in on her. In the darkness, she was pulled into a scorching embrace and pressed back against the cold door.A forceful kiss followed. The man’s grip was strong, pinning her in place so she couldn’t move. Just as she was about to gather herself and bite down in retaliation, a familiar cool scent reached her.For a split second, she froze. Her body softening.Sensing the shift, a low laugh rumbled from his throat. He took advantage of it, deepening the kiss without restraint. One hand held the back of her head firmly, while the other slid from her cheek down along her neck, tracing the line of her dress before settling at her waist, pulling her tightly against him.“Mm…” Lizzie’s face flushed from lack of air, her strength slipping away. Her hands instinctively clutched at his suit jacket to steady herself. It felt like an eternity before he finally pulled back. In the darkness, his fingers brushed ov

At that moment, as Noah looked at the poised and elegant Yvonne standing beside Gregory, his eyes narrowed slightly, a trace of scrutiny in his gaze.To others, though, that look carried an entirely different meaning.People nearby began whispering among themselves.“Mr. Grant Sr. brought Yvonne here. It’s pretty obvious what he has in mind. Aiming for the position of Mrs. Sinclair?”“Yvonne’s impressive, though. Among her generation, she’s probably the best the Grant family has. Mr. Grant Sr. must have high hopes for her.”“They do look good together—perfect match. Just look at the way Mr. Sinclair’s looking at her… clearly there’s something there.”“Should’ve brought my niece along, maybe she’d have had a shot.”“Come on, your niece? Compared to Yvonne?”“So what if she can’t compare? She’s got her own strengths. Men don’t mind having options.”The whispers grew more and more distasteful. Lizzie felt a wave of irritation. She was about to get up and leave when Nathan reached out, c

In his eyes, the real target tonight was Noah—everything else was just a warm-up. The main course hadn’t even begun.“I just saw Sharon. Chatted with her for a bit.”Lizzie’s words carried a quiet edge, the meaning just beneath the surface: "Go find your first love. Stop hovering here.”But Nathan either missed the implication or chose to ignore it. Not only did he stay, he moved even closer, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, every bit the attentive husband.Just then, Noah appeared. His presence was commanding; drawing everyone’s attention the moment he stepped into view.He wore a dark suit, the fabric subtly patterned with embroidered thorned roses.“Thank you all for attending tonight’s art reception. The pieces brought this evening will be offered for charity. On behalf of the beneficiaries, I’d like to express my gratitude. “Tonight, let’s keep the focus on art; no business talk. I hope everyone enjoys the evening.”With that, the room shifted. The u

“I remember when Sharon was little—round-cheeked and full of energy, always running around. I used to live next door, so I’d drop by all the time to play with her.” As Nathan spoke, he watched Shaun closely, measuring his reaction.Shaun had gone abroad at a young age and missed both his sister’s birth and her first five years. It wasn’t until their parents’ accident that he had to suspend his studies and rush back, moving between the hospital and the funeral. That was the first time he had truly seen his sister.“When I came back, Sharon was still in the hospital. She must have been terrified,” Shaun said, his tone filled with concern.“She was in the car during the accident too, wasn’t she?”“Yes. Our parents passed away, but thankfully she wasn’t seriously hurt, just shaken. Maybe our parents were watching over her.”At that, Shaun looked at Nathan with a trace of relief. “You’ve taken such good care of her all these years. It’s almost like you’ve been her brother. With you aroun

As Lizzie took in the room filled with paintings, sculptures, and curated antiques, she moved from one display to the next on instinct, studying each piece with quiet focus. When her gaze landed on an unassuming, old-fashioned cup, her expression shifted again. She had seen that piece before—years ago, in Noah’s living room. Back then, she’d been mischievous enough to rinse her paintbrush in it. And not once had Noah ever mentioned how valuable it was.Noticing how off she seemed all evening, Nathan assumed she simply wasn’t used to this kind of setting. He sighed inwardly, thinking he should bring her out more often to get accustomed to it.Just then, Sharon and Shaun entered the hall. Sharon spotted Nathan immediately. Ever since the incident at the hospital, he had turned cold toward her.She tried reaching out a few times, only to be brushed off. She begun to wonder if she had pushed things too far.Tonight, she asked her brother to bring her along, planning to soften things wit

The gathering was held at a secluded private estate on the outskirts of the city. As night fell, security was stationed at the entrance, and a stream of luxury cars rolled in one after another.Lizzie stepped out of the van and spotted Nathan’s signature black Maybach in the distance. She walked over. The moment Nathan saw her, his brows knit together. “You’re not wearing the custom gown I had prepared?”“What gown?” Lizzie paused, confused.“I had it delivered to your studio this morning.”She pulled out her phone and noticed several missed calls from the studio. She must have missed them. Her tone remained calm. “I wasn’t at the studio today.”Nathan frowned deeply at that and immediately called his assistant. “Go to the studio and get the gown. Hurry.”After hanging up, a trace of irritation surfaced. This was the first time he had decided to bring Lizzie to a gathering like this, and she clearly hadn’t taken it seriously—slipping up on something as basic as this.Lizzie caught h
