That night, Adrian felt suffocated being in the same room with Evelyn.

Despite it being their wedding night, he walked out without looking back.

He couldn’t explain why he couldn’t stand the thought of having Evelyn as his wife.

Yes, they had grown up together.

Yes, he knew she loved him.

But none of that mattered to him.

Adrian was never a man built to love. He had grown up without his parents — his mother had left his father the moment things started going downhill, and his father, seeing himself as a failure, abandoned him soon after.

Adrian had no choice but to grow up under the care of his grandmother, Mrs. Eleanor Chase.

Years later, word spread that his father had died, but Adrian never cared enough to find out the truth.

He had stopped believing in love or family long ago. His only focus was money — making so much of it that the world would bow at his feet. He wanted to prove to his mother that she was wrong for leaving him for wealth and to his father for giving up on him so easily.

So, for Adrian, accepting the marriage wasn’t about love. It was about building a stronger foundation for himself — and, above all, fulfilling his grandmother’s dying wish.

---

Evelyn thought he had simply stepped out of the bedroom for a moment.

But after waiting what felt like an eternity with no sign of Adrian, she went to his study to look for him.

The light in the study was dim, but there was no trace of him. She searched the living room and the downstairs hall — still nothing.

Feeling uneasy, Evelyn stepped outside to clear her head. Her feet led her unconsciously toward the garage, where she noticed something that made her heart sink — Adrian’s favorite sports car was gone.

That was when it dawned on her.

Adrian had left the house.

On their wedding night.

“Does he hate me that much?” Evelyn whispered to herself as tears slipped down her cheeks.

She returned to the house quietly, gathered her thoughts, and not wanting to disturb anyone, went into the kitchen to make herself a cup of warm milk. Afterward, she returned to their bedroom and lay down alone.

---

The next morning, Evelyn woke up early.

The other side of the bed was cold — a painful reminder that Adrian hadn’t come home all night.

Her heart stung, but she brushed it aside.

If she truly wanted to win his heart, she told herself, she had to learn to ignore the little hurts.

With that thought in mind, she freshened up and went downstairs to make breakfast — hoping, just hoping, that Adrian might come home for a meal.

“Good morning, Madam,” the butler greeted the moment he saw her descending the stairs.

“Hmm,” Evelyn murmured, barely glancing at him.

“It’s still very early, Madam,” the butler said gently. “Perhaps you should rest a little longer. If there’s anything you’d like to eat, please let me have the chef prepare it.”

“Don’t worry,” Evelyn said firmly. “I’ll be making breakfast from now on. The chef can assist me if needed.”

It was said that the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach — and Evelyn had already made up her mind during the long, lonely night.

She would give up her career and her own life for now. She would win Adrian’s heart.

After that, she could always pick up where she left off.

---

An hour later, Evelyn emerged from the kitchen with several dishes — all the meals she remembered Adrian loved.

By 6:30 a.m., she had finished setting the table. She changed into something neat and simple, her heart filled with quiet hope. Surely, Adrian would come home for breakfast.

Even if he planned to skip their honeymoon and return to work right away, he’d at least stop by to change his clothes.

At least that’s what she told herself.

But the hours passed.

Adrian didn’t return that morning.

Nor did he come home for lunch.

By evening, she sat and watched dinner grow cold — just like the morning meal.

“Madam, you should retire inside. You might catch a cold,” Butler Chan said softly as he approached the garden, where Evelyn sat on a swing cushion, waiting.

“Don’t worry about me,” she replied with quiet determination. “I’ll wait a little longer.”

“But it’s already past midnight,” he said gently, pity in his eyes. “I doubt the young master will return tonight.”

Evelyn didn’t respond. She simply stared into the night sky, lost in her thoughts.

Seeing that she wouldn’t listen, Butler Chan sighed and went back inside.

Evelyn remained outside until past one in the morning before finally gathering the strength to return to her empty room.

Evelyn stared blankly at the doctor, wanting to laugh but not daring to.“How can I be pregnant, Doctor? Are you sure you’re holding my test results?” she asked, disbelief painting her face. The doctor frowned. “Mrs. Chase, I’ve been your family doctor for decades. Do you think your father would still keep me around if I was capable of making such a silly mistake as mixing up samples?”“Sorry, Doc. That’s not what I meant,” Evelyn said quickly. “I just find it hard to believe I’m pregnant. I mean, it’s not possible to get pregnant without being with a man or at least through artificial insemination. So how can I be pregnant when I haven’t done either of—”Her words trailed off. Suddenly, it hit her.—Flashback (Two Months Ago)—It was two months earlier when Adrian had come home drunk. He barged into her room without warning, reeking of alcohol and regret. She’d been sitting by the window when he stumbled toward her, eyes red and unfocused. He didn’t say much—just pulled her into his

In the blink of an eye, three years had passed.Evelyn spent the last two years treating Adrian and Clara like ghosts. After his business trip, Adrian started frequenting the house again, but Evelyn completely ignored him. He tried countless times to make her loosen up, but she didn’t budge. She knew him too well — he wasn’t trying to make things right; he just couldn’t handle being ignored. He missed the version of her who used to fawn over him, and he couldn’t accept that she’d finally stopped. At some point, Adrian gave up completely and began dating Clara publicly. They once attended a charity gala together — an event Evelyn was supposed to accompany Adrian to as his wife. Yet, Clara showed up alone, flaunting an invitation she claimed Adrian had personally given her.Maybe she wanted to provoke Evelyn.“Here’s to our friendship,” Clara said sweetly, offering Evelyn a glass of wine. “Even though we’re no longer friends, we shouldn’t be enemies, don’t you think?”Evelyn ignored her

“And where is that bastard husband of yours?” Isa demanded, crossing her arms.“Probably out with Clara, having fun,” Evelyn replied flatly, her voice void of emotion.“Butler Chan!” Isa called sharply. The butler rushed in immediately, clearly nervous. The fierce look in Isa’s eyes was enough to make anyone uneasy. She looked like she could tear down walls if pushed further.“Where is that jerk?” she asked coldly.Chan lowered his gaze. “Miss Isa, Mr. John called earlier to inform us that the young master traveled to Country C on a business trip. He didn’t mention when he’ll be returning.”Isa scoffed. “So, he ran off with his mistress, huh?”“M–Mistress?” Chan stammered, eyes wide. “You must be mistaken, ma’am. The young master has no mistress. Those must be rumors meant to ta—”The deadly glare Isa shot him froze his words in his throat. He quickly bowed and retreated inside without another word.“Don’t worry, Evelyn,” Isa said, her tone softening as she turned back to her sister.

Adrian stared at the message for a long while, his mind spinning.> “You’ll soon lose everything.”What did that even mean? Who was the sender, and what exactly was he going to lose?Frustration clawed at his chest. He typed quickly:> “Who the hell are you, and what’s there to lose?”But before he could even think, the chat disappeared. He’d been blocked. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. His thoughts drifted back to the night before — to Evelyn’s quiet voice, her strange calmness, the way she had said “Nothing yet.”That phrase haunted him. Did she see Clara’s message? Is that why she was awake in the middle of the night? Then another thought struck him. Wait… could the message be from Evelyn? But he immediately shook his head. No — Evelyn wasn’t one for games or hidden threats. If she had something to say, she’d say it straight to his face.Still, something inside him twisted uneasily. He picked up his phone, hesitating before dialing Evelyn’s number — but he didn’t know w

The soft glow of the phone still lingered in Evelyn’s eyes. She lay there motionless, listening to the steady rhythm of Adrian’s breathing beside her. He was asleep — or pretending to be.Her fingers hovered just inches from the phone, trembling. Every part of her wanted to see the full message, to confirm what her heart already feared. But another part of her — the part that was tired of hurting — stopped her.She withdrew her hand and sat up slowly. The room was quiet, but her mind wasn’t.> “I can’t stop thinking about last night…”Those words echoed over and over again until she couldn’t tell whether she was angry, heartbroken, or just… numb.Quietly, she slipped out of bed and walked toward the balcony. The cold night air kissed her skin, carrying the faint scent of rain. Somewhere below, the garden lights flickered — the same garden where she had once seen Adrian and Clara talking in low tones, too close for comfort.Tears blurred her vision as she whispered to herself, “How lon

Adrian let out a quiet sigh after Evelyn left his study. The image of her fighting back tears clung to his mind like a stubborn echo. He felt an ache in his chest — strange, unfamiliar, and uncomfortable. He tried to ignore it, burying himself in work, but it lingered.Frustrated, he picked up his phone and dialed his assistant.“My wife’s birthday was yesterday,” he said flatly. “I forgot. Get something she’d like and have it delivered first thing tomorrow morning.”Without waiting for a response, he hung up and stared at the empty space Evelyn had stood moments ago, the faint scent of her perfume still lingering in the air.---The next morning, Evelyn woke up to the cold, untouched side of the bed. She didn’t flinch — she was long used to it.After a slow shower, she stood before the mirror, her fingers brushing over her reflection as fragments of last night replayed in her mind — the text, the name, the truth she didn’t want to face. She went downstairs, silently praying not to se
