"Grandma" Kaylar called out in a distressed tone as she walked into the mansion.
"Kaylar, my dear! Y-your grandfather..!" Kaylar's grandmother said as she hugged the life out of Kaylar. It had taken quite some time before Kaylar had reached her grandparent's house and when she did, she was surprised at how quiet the mansion was.She guessed that it was because of her grandfather being sick that the servants in the house were quiet and hiding away from sight. She couldn't blame them though, her grandmother wasn't the nicest person to others when she was overwhelmed.Kaylar and her grandmother hurried upstairs, where her grandfather's room was located and opened the door harshly."Grandpa!" Kaylar cried out in pain as she inched closer to her sleeping grandfather. Her grandfather had always been in bad health ever since he reached old age. It wasn't a secret but seeing her grandfather who always smiled and had a joyful attitude lying down motionlessly on the bed with some medical equipment hooked to him, broke her heart."We couldn't take him to the hospital because his condition wasn't stable enough so we just called the family doctor." Her grandmother explained."And what did the doctor say?" Kaylar asked as she brought a chair to sit down beside the bed that her grandfather was lying on."He said that your grandfather..." Her grandmother began but was stopped by the abrupt cracking of her voice and the tears that followed."What would happen to grandfather?" Kaylar asked. She knew she wouldn't like the answer but she had to know. The hand that she was using to hold her grandfather's hand tightened as the tears that were held captive in her eyes threatened to escape."The doctor said he might not live long..." Her grandmother said in between sobs."What?" Kaylar was stunned. Her grandfather whom she held in so much regard might die soon. How could she accept that? It was impossible. But, seeing her grandfather's situation, maybe it was true."How long does he have left?" Kaylar asked quickly."I don't know, they said that he had to be stable first before they conducted more tests on him."Her grandmother answered her question as she paced around the room slowly.Kaylar had her mouth wide open. What did the doctor mean that he wasn't sure? The room went silent after that and both the grandmother and granddaughter stared at Kaylar's grandfather for some time until they heard a soft groan."Grandpa!" Kaylar exclaimed loudly as she stood up suddenly making her chair fall."Kaylar..." She could hear the hoarse voice of her grandfather calling out to her but she was too happy to respond."Honey..." Kaylar's grandmother followed suit as she hugged her husband with renewed vigour. After both of them had hugged him and calmed down, they took a seat on the edge of the bed right at the foot of Kaylar's grandfather. Luckily the bed was big enough to contain all of them."What happened to you, Grandpa?" Kaylar asked her grandfather in a soft tone which made him sigh weakly."I forgot how weak my body is and went too far, nothing important..." Her grandfather said as he closed his eyes briefly. It was obvious that he was still tired but he looked like he wanted to say something. Having thought of a great idea, Kaylar spoke up."How about I go make some porridge? It won't take that long.""That'd be lovely, thank you." Her grandmother thanked her with a smile.Kaylar had always loved her grandmother's smile, ever since she was young. With their approval, Kaylar quickly went down to the kitchen but was stopped when she accidentally bumped into a worker."Sorry..." Kaylar apologized briefly and wanted to start going to the kitchen but paused as she noticed what the girl was holding."It's ok, no need to apologize..." The girl was about to say something else but was stopped by Kaylar."Wait...what are you using that for?" She asked."A guest is arriving soon, we're preparing!" The worker answered with an excited smile.'A guest?' Kaylar thought once she reached the kitchen. Maybe the guest was an old friend of her grandfather or something similar. She decided that she wouldn't waste any more time thinking of irrelevant matters as she started to make two plates of porridge. One for her grandfather and the other for her grandmother. It was a pity that her mother couldn't make it to the mansion, she had important matters to deal with and couldn't make it.Once she was done with the porridge, she placed the two plates on a tray and asked another worker to help her take it upstairs as she cleaned up the kitchen a bit. It didn't take long before she started going upstairs. It was just porridge she made, not a difficult or messy dish so the kitchen wasn't as messy as one would imagine it to be...."But are you sure Kaylar would agree?"Kaylar's hands stopped right above the door handle as soon as she heard her grandmother say that. What wouldn't she agree on?Were they hiding something from her?Kaylar wasn't so sure so she continued to listen in through the other side of the door."As much as I hate to admit it, she has no choice unless she wants to see her family and our company go up in flames," Her grandfather said with a sigh at the beginning.Their conversation was extremely vague and Kaylar couldn't understand what they were talking about but she knew it had something to do with her."Yes but... why would he suddenly bring back the marriage agreement between both of our families?" Her grandmother asked no one in particular.Marriage? They wanted her to get married?Kaylar at that moment didn't know how to feel.Should she feel happy?Sad?Angry?Or betrayed?Ever since she had witnessed her parents' failed marriage she hadn't been interested in anything marriage-related related and they knew that.So why are they still talking about her in a conversation that involved marriage?Kaylar was so absorbed in her thoughts that she didn't notice the heavy sounds of footsteps coming closer toward her or the fact that the door was slowly opening."Miss Harper, what are you doing?"Kaylar instantly felt goosebumps on her skin, she knew that voice.Turning around slowly, Kaylar cursed her bad luck. She was right."Mr Fernando..."Hello lovely readers, don't forget to vote and drop some Gems for this author. Wayne left Jason's room, his mind in turmoil. The weight of his mother’s venomous words lingered, but he forced himself to focus on the present. As he stepped into the hallway, he called out to the police officers. “Get Meghan out of there,” he ordered, his voice cold and detached. Without waiting for a response, he made his way back to Kaylar’s room. Inside the ward, it was quiet, almost eerily so. Kaylar lay peacefully in her bed, her breathing steady, though her face still showed signs of the ordeal she had endured. Wayne’s mother-in-law was seated beside her, but Wayne could see the exhaustion in her eyes. “You should go home and rest,” Wayne told her gently. She looked at him with a mix of concern and understanding before nodding. “Call me if anything changes,” she said softly before gathering her things and leaving the room. Now it was just Wayne, Kaylar, and Chad, who had just entered the room. Wayne could feel the chaos in his mind, the events of the day overwhelming hi
The hours dragged on in the quiet, sterile corridors of the hospital. Wayne paced back and forth, his mind heavy with worry for Kaylar. When the doors of the emergency room finally swung open, and she was rolled out, Wayne’s heart lurched in his chest. He immediately stood up, his body tensed with anxiety. Kaylar was pale, her eyes closed, and tubes were attached to her, but she was alive. That was all that mattered. Wayne followed the gurney as it was rolled into her ward. He stayed by her side, holding her hand, his eyes never leaving her face. She looked so fragile lying there, a stark contrast to the fierce, determined woman he knew and loved. But as much as he wanted to stay, Chad’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “Wayne,” Chad said softly as he entered the room, his face grim. “Jason’s just been rolled out of the emergency room.”Wayne felt a wave of conflicted emotions wash over him. He glanced back at Kaylar, her mother now sitting beside her, watching over her with the same
Before she could protest, Wayne dashed out of the building, his footsteps echoing through the empty corridors as he chased after Jason. The night was cool, the air thick with tension as Wayne sprinted into the darkness, his heart pounding with a mixture of adrenaline and fear. He knew this was the endgame—Jason had to be stopped, no matter the cost.Jason, injured and desperate, limped ahead, the pain in his leg slowing him down. He glanced back, seeing Wayne closing in, and gritted his teeth. He had always prided himself on staying one step ahead, but now he was cornered, his escape routes dwindling. As he stumbled into a nearby alleyway, he knew he had to make a final stand.Wayne burst into the alley just as Jason turned to face him, a gun clutched in his hand. There was no hesitation in Jason’s eyes now—only a cold resolve. Wayne barely had time to react as Jason fired. The bullet grazed Wayne’s shoulder, but he didn’t falter. He fired back, the shot hitting Jason squarely in the
Kaylar was dragged through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned building, her heels clicking against the dusty concrete. The men holding her were rough, their grip like iron clamps on her arms. She forced herself to stay calm, knowing that the internal tracking device embedded in her skin was still operational. Wayne would come. He had to.Jason’s men shoved her into a large, dimly lit room at the heart of the building. The walls were lined with rusted pipes and broken windows, allowing beams of moonlight to pierce through the darkness. The place reeked of decay, a fitting backdrop for whatever twisted plan Jason had in mind.Jason followed them in, his footsteps echoing ominously as he approached her. His eyes glinted with malicious intent as he looked down at her, bound and vulnerable. “You’re surprisingly calm, Kaylar,” he said, a smirk playing on his lips. “I suppose you’re still holding on to hope that your precious Wayne will come to your rescue.”Kaylar met his gaze, refusi
Kaylar stood at the edge of the deserted parking lot, her breath visible in the cool evening air. The location Jason had chosen was far from the city—a quiet, industrial area that seemed abandoned. The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving only the faint glow of streetlights to cut through the gathering darkness. She checked her watch: 6:10 PM. Her nerves were frayed, but she kept her expression calm, glancing around for any sign of movement. Chad and Wayne were positioned nearby, monitoring her every move through the tracking device and earpiece she had concealed. She whispered into the earpiece, "Everything looks quiet... too quiet."Wayne’s voice crackled in her ear, “Stay alert. If anything seems off, we’re pulling you out.”Kaylar nodded slightly, trying to steady her racing heart. The air was thick with anticipation as she waited, every minute feeling like an eternity. Suddenly, the distant rumble of an engine reached her ears, and she turned to see a car approaching from t
The city was bathed in the golden hues of the late afternoon sun, its bustling streets unaware of the turmoil brewing behind the scenes. In a sleek, high-rise office, Jason sat behind his desk, his demeanour as cold and calculating as ever. His mind was focused, not on immediate confrontation, but on a strategy that would create chaos without direct conflict. Jason’s office was immaculate, a testament to his obsessive need for control. The room was filled with the soft hum of air conditioning and the occasional click of his keyboard as he worked on his laptop. A sinister smile played at the corners of his mouth as he prepared for the next phase of his plan. He was interrupted by a knock at the door. One of his trusted operatives entered, carrying a stack of documents. Jason looked up, his eyes narrowing with interest. “Everything is set, sir,” the operative said, placing the documents on the desk. Jason’s gaze flickered over the papers, his smile widening. “Excellent. Let’s proceed
