Chapter 3

Author: Rogue Fritter
“Did you forget how Grandma died? Did you forget how I was ruined… How do you still have the cheek to ask me to be understanding?”

To this day, I still couldn’t understand. How could Sarah be so heartless as to fall in love with the killer who caused Grandma’s death and even get pregnant with his baby, a baby we would never have together?

Recalling those unbearable memories, Sarah’s face turned pale. With red eyes, her lips trembled as she looked at me.

“I’m sorry… Dan, I…”

Digging my fingernails into my palms, I closed my eyes numbly.

“I’m tired. Let’s go to the courthouse.”

When the clerk handed over that official divorce certificate, I froze for a moment. Suddenly, I remembered the day we got legally married.

Back then, Sarah was as happy as a kid, getting our photos taken again and again just to make sure we looked our absolute best. It had only been a few years, yet it felt like a lifetime ago.

By the time I snapped out of it, we were already standing outside the courthouse.

“Dan, let me drive you back.” Sarah grabbed my arm, leading me into the car before I could refuse.

Silence filled the ride. When the car pulled up to my apartment building, she followed me upstairs.

The key turned in the lock, and the moment the door opened, a figure jumped out from the master bedroom. Joseph was throwing himself straight at Sarah.

“Babe, surprise!”

Sarah’s expression changed instantly, and she shoved him away.

“Why are you here? Dan, I didn’t give him the code. I don’t know why he’s here either!” she frantically tried to explain to me.

Only then did Joseph notice me. His face betrayed no attempt to hide the sneer on his face.

“You’re divorced, yet you’re still going home with your ex-wife? Daniel, you really are as pathetic and cheap as ever!”

“Joseph, haven’t you made enough of a scene? You don’t belong here. Get the hell out!” Sarah barked at him.

Joseph was stunned. “Sarah, how could you yell at me like this?”

I ignored them both and walked straight toward the bedroom, wanting nothing more than to pack my things and leave as soon as possible. However, the moment I pushed the bedroom door open, my blood ran cold.

The Doberman that Joseph had brought along was rolling around in a pile of gray powder—my grandmother’s ash—and chewing on a silver watch.

That was my grandmother’s ashes and the heirloom she left for me!

“No!”

I charged forward, throwing myself at the dog to wrench the watch from its jaws. Startled, the Doberman barked and sank its razor-sharp teeth deep into my arm, ripping off a whole piece of flesh.

A sharp pain shot through me, and I sank to my knees.

“Daniel!”

Sarah rushed in. Seeing the scene before her, her face turned terrifyingly white. In a panic, she snatched a heavy vase off the table and smashed it against the rabid Doberman.

With a dull thud, the dog let go and slumped limply to the ground.

“Dan… Dan, how are you feeling?”

She threw herself toward me, her hands trembling as she tried to touch my bleeding arm.

“Get away! Get away from me, all of you!”

I shoved her back, desperately trying to gather the blood-soaked ashes on the floor into my chest like a madman. However, as the blood mixed with the dust, I couldn’t scoop them up no matter how hard I tried.

“This was our grandma! How could you… How could you let someone do this to her?” Tears streamed down my face as my entire body shook from the pain, and I said, “We’re divorced! Why won’t you just let me go?”

Sarah froze. “Don’t do this… Dan, come on. Let’s go to the hospital, okay?”

She dropped to the ground and pulled me tightly into her arms.

Her choked voice was filled with remorse. “I’m sorry, Dan… I’ll have someone fix the watch for you. You’re hurt. Let’s go to the hospital and get you treated first, alright?”

The agony in my wrist had spread throughout my entire body. Powerless to resist, I let her hold me as we sprinted out of the room.

Meanwhile, Joseph watched the whole scene with eyes full of malice.

“Sarah!”

He stood in front of the door, grabbing a kitchen knife and holding it right against his own neck.

He yelled, “Sarah, if you take him to the hospital, I’ll kill myself right now and leave the baby in your belly fatherless!”

Sarah looked at me, who was nearly unconscious, and then at Joseph. A conflicted look flashed in her eyes.

“Joseph, stop this at once!”

With bloodshot eyes, Joseph yelled, “If you walk out that door, I’ll die right in front of you!”

The arms around my waist tightened.

Just when I thought she was going to abandon me for Joseph yet again, Sarah gritted her teeth and spat out, “Whatever.”

After that, she took me straight into the car before dashing to the hospital, running all the red lights along the way.

“Dan, stay here. I’ll be right back.”

Before her words could settle, she had rushed off. As it turned out, she still couldn’t let go of Joseph. That was why she left so hurriedly.

She was in such a hurry that she didn’t even realize she had dropped me off not at the trauma and emergency department but right at the door of the obstetrics and gynecology department.

After that day, I never saw Sarah again. It seemed she had returned home, spending her nights drinking herself into numbness at local bars.I stopped paying attention to her. Instead, with the support of my friends, I slowly poured all my energy into picking up the paintbrush again.Once my wrist injury healed, I spent almost all my time in the studio. After a period of quiet focus and experimentation, my paintings began to attract attention. Having a solo art exhibition—a dream that was once shattered—no longer seemed out of reach. The next time I heard news of Sarah, however, it was connected to Joseph. Word was that while in prison, Joseph faked severe abdominal pain. On the way to the hospital with the prison guards, he jumped out of the vehicle and escaped. He still held a bitter grudge against Sarah and me for putting him behind bars. He even sent me a threatening text message. [Daniel, you ruined my life! Don’t think you’ll get off easy. I will never let you or Sarah off t

After winding down and taking a breather, Clara accompanied me to my scheduled appointment at the clinic. The doctor completed the preliminary exam, pointed at the scans, and spoke with absolute confidence. “I can guarantee a one-hundred percent recovery for your right hand.”The crushing weight that had been weighing on my chest finally lifted.Over the following days, I diligently cooperated with every treatment session. Slowly but surely, the nerves in my right hand began to heal.Eventually, a month later, I could pick up a brush and paint once again.“We should celebrate!”Clara, who was genuinely happy for me, pulled out two tickets like a magic trick.“There’s an emerging artist exhibition at the art gallery tomorrow. I think you’ll be interested.”In a great mood, I smiled and took the tickets. However, the next day, Clara and I walked into the gallery only to run straight into a familiar face.“Daniel, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”Sarah walked over and grab

“You didn’t actually think I would marry you, did you?”Sarah casually pulled out two marriage certificates. Then, right before Joseph’s wide eyes, she tore them into pieces without a moment's hesitation. As the scraps of paper fluttered down, she said with a scornful look in her eyes, “The marriage certificates are fake. I paid someone off long ago. From the start, this was all just an act.“If I weren't afraid you’d keep coming after Dan, I’d feel disgusted even touching you.”Only after losing me and realizing my love for her was gone did Sarah finally understand. By struggling and playing along with Joseph, she was losing the person she loved even more.“How… how could you…” Joseph stammered incoherently, the color completely drained from his face. “How could you do this to me?”Before Sarah could answer him, the police immediately stepped forward and took him away. Sarah didn't answer, nor did she need to. Several police officers stepped up quickly and took Joseph away. All

“It’s not real! None of this is real!”Seeing all his misdeeds exposed online, Joseph’s first instinct was to smash his phone to pieces. Then, he rushed over to Sarah to explain.“Honey, trust me… You have to believe me! Those are all fake, generated to set me up!” He sobbed, clinging to Sarah, whose face was dark and menacing. His voice trembled as he said, “I didn’t bribe the doctor. It was Daniel! He’s jealous, and he’s trying to get revenge–”“Are you still trying to lie to me?”Sarah shoved him away and slapped the medical record right into his face. She said sarcastically, “You’re infertile. So tell me, how exactly could you get me pregnant? Besides, I just had a checkup. There is nothing in my belly.”Joseph suddenly stopped with his flimsy excuses, and his face drained of all color.“You bribed the doctor, faked the pregnancy report, drugged me, and put on this grand illusion…” Sarah let out a smile that was uglier than crying as she continued, “All just so I’d act l

[Joseph Greer, Male, Sterility, Male Infertility.]Sarah’s eyes fixed on those few words. Suddenly, she felt her world spin, and she could barely keep her balance.“How is this… even possible?”She didn’t dare to entertain the thought that if Joseph Greer was infertile, then what was growing inside her belly? What was the point of all her struggles and compromises over the past few months?Panicking, Sarah pulled out her phone and sent me a message.[This report is fake, isn’t it? Dan, where are you?]She desperately wanted me to deny it. So, I replied simply. [It’s real. As for your pregnancy, you might want to get a second opinion at a different hospital.]Only then did everything click. She remembered how, for every prenatal checkup, Joseph had insisted on taking her to the same private hospital to see the same renowned specialist. The appointments were always quick, and the reports consistently read “fetal health normal.” Yet, besides the initial blood test, she—as a moth

I watched as she walked away and let out a self-deprecating smile. Then, I walked toward the trauma and emergency department myself.I signed the consent form and had the wound cleaned and sutured up. The process of the needle and thread pulling through flesh was agonizingly slow. Each of the forty-nine stitches felt like a blade carving straight into my heart. Finally, the doctor administered a rabies vaccine and told the nurse to help me over to a bed to rest. However, the moment I stepped into the ward, an intense wave of dizziness washed over me, and everything went dark.In my dream, there was no Joseph, no infidelity, and no death. There was only a scene of our family of four, living happily together. My grandmother and Sarah were gathered around a doll-like little girl, smiling as they called out to me, “Dan, come quickly! Look, our little daughter, Ella, is smiling at you!”I reached out my hand, but right as my fingertips were about to touch the child’s cheek, the dream s
