The Weight He Carried

The walk back to the penthouse was unusually quiet.

The air seemed to be fresher than when they were in the underground empire.

It was almost 3am in the morning.

The campus looked completely different at this hour, Empty pathways…Silent buildings, Dark windows.

The world felt asleep, Only the two of us remained awake.

And somehow...Neither of us knew what to say.

Kaizen walked a few steps ahead of me.

His black duffel bag rested heavily against his shoulder.

The same bag now stuffed with money.

Money earned through bruises, Through blood, Through pain, Through sacrifice.

I couldn't stop staring at it…because now I knew what that money represented.

Hospital bills, Medication, Specialists, His mother's survival…that was all that mattered to him right now.

Every dollar inside that bag had cost him something, Sometimes his body,Sometimes his pride, Sometimes both.

The realization sat heavily in my chest.

****

Kaizen looked exhausted, Not only physically, but Emotionally exhausted…

The kind of exhaustion sleep couldn't fix.

Fresh cuts marked his knuckles, they were knuckles were swollen.

His lower lip had a slight cut during the fight.

Even now, blood still stained parts of his shirt.

Yet somehow...He seemed more bothered by me than by any injury.

He kept avoiding my gaze, kept looking ahead.

Kept pretending to be interested in everything except me.

As if eye contact might kill him.

“Hmmmm”

Finally I sighed. Loudly

"Are you going to ignore me all the way home?"

He says nothing….

"Kaizen."

Still nothing.

"Kaizen."

He groaned dramatically,

"Nyra."

"There he is."

He rolled his eyes… For a brief moment the familiar irritation returned.

And oddly enough...It made everything feel normal again.

A weak smile touched his mouth before disappearing, then his expression turned serious.

"About tonight im..."

His voice lowered,

I immediately knew where this was heading.

"Don't bother."

He blinked.

"What?”

"Don't apologize."

His brows furrowed.

"Nyra."

"No."

He stopped walking, So did I.

For a few seconds neither of us spoke.

The night breeze moved quietly between us, even on my hoodie I still felt chills.

I've never been out in the cold night by this time in my life.

Then he finally said,

"I brought you into danger."

"No. You didn't…I walked into it myself"

His jaw tightened.

"I lied to you."

"Yes."

"I hid things about my personal life."

"Obviously."

A tiny laugh escaped him, Despite everything….Then his smile faded.

"You could've gotten hurt."

The words came out rough, heavy and genuine.

And suddenly I understood, this wasn't about guilt, this was fear.

He had genuinely been scared for me.

The memory of those security guards flashed through my mind,

The way they'd dragged me?

The way they'd laughed?

The way they looked at people Like prey….if they had known I was a girl?

A shiver crawled down my spine.

What would've happened if I hadn't been disguised?

What would've happened if Kaizen hadn't intervened?

What would've happened if nobody knew who I was?

The answer terrified me.

I swallowed hard.

For the first time since leaving the arena...I felt the full weight of what almost happened.

Immediately,...I felt guilty too…maybe I should've listened.

Maybe I should've gone home.

Maybe curiosity wasn't always worth satisfying.

"I caused trouble too."

My voice came out quieter.

Kaizen immediately shook his head.

"You didn't."

"I did."

"No."

"Kaizen."

"No. You don't have to blame yourself, I've been causing you trouble right from the very first day of your scholarship"

His answer came firmly and Final.

The determination in his eyes surprised me.

For a moment we simply stood there.

Two exhausted people, both blaming themselves but Kaizen wants to take more of the blames, Neither willing to blame the other.

Then suddenly my legs gave out…not completely, Just enough to cause imbalance.

A sharp ache shot through my body, I stumbled forward.

The surgery…

The stress….

The hospital…

The sleepless nights….

The trauma of tonight……

Everything finally caught up with me.

Before I could hit the ground, strong arms caught me swiftly.

I squeaked.

"Seriously?"

Kaizen stared down at me.

His expression looked equal parts concerned and annoyed.

"You almost collapsed."

"I'm fine."

"You nearly folded in half."

"I was adjusting my balance."

“Indeed”

" You looked like a newborn giraffe."

I gasped…I wasn't expecting that polished insult from him.

"A newborn giraffe?"

He nodded.

"Very tragic."

Before I could argue, He crouched, Turned slightly and gestured behind him.

"Get on."

I blinked.

"What?"

"Get on."

My eyes widened.

"You're injured.”

"And you're exhausted.”

I hesitated.

He sighed dramatically.

"Nyra."

"What?"

"If you don't get on my back right now, I'm leaving you here."

I narrowed my eyes because I knew I was gonna enjoy the ride.

"You're bluffing."

"Try me."

Thirty seconds later...I was on his back ASAP.

My dignity remained somewhere behind us…DUMPED!!! I can't afford to decline a nice ride for my dignity. Lol..

Kaizen adjusted his grip beneath my knees, carefully avoided touching my butt.

Decency at its peak.

Few months ago if someone would have told me a day like this would come, I'd never believe.

He continued walking with his duffel bag strapped in front .

The warmth was surprisingly comforting, embarrassingly comforting.

I rested my chin lightly against his shoulder..

" You're surprisingly heavy."

My eyes widened.

"Excuse me?" I feigned a serious tone.

"Your weight is terrifying." Kaizen made it sound worse

I smacked his shoulder, Immediately I regretted it.

"Ouch!"

The movement jostled his fresh injuries.

"Oh my God, someone's maltreating me."

"I'm sorry."

"Violence."

"I'm sorry."

"Abuse."

"Kaizen."

"Assault."

I started laughing…..Despite myself.

And surprisingly...So did he.

Our laughter echoed softly through the empty pathway.

For the first time that night...Neither of us felt afraid.

Eventually his hearty laughter faded.

Then he spoke quietly.

"When you've rested..."

I lifted my head eagerly.

"Hm?"

"I'll tell you part of it."

My heartbeat quickened.

"The underground ring."

His voice grew serious.

"Not everything though."

I nodded slowly.

"Just part."

"Okay."

His eyes flickered toward me.

"Promise me something first."

"What?"

"Don't go digging for more."

Silence.

Then I muttered softly…

"I promise."

His shoulders visibly rela

xed.

As though that promise mattered more than I realized.

And as we continued walking through the sleeping campus...I found myself smiling, because for the first time since meeting Kaizen Arclair...

The distance between us felt smaller, Not gone, not completely….but smaller.

And somehow...That felt like the beginning of something important.

Kaizen hadn't slept. Not for an hour. Not even for a minute. The same message had been glowing on his phone screen since dawn, yet his thumb still hovered over it as if staring long enough might somehow change the words. It never did.His untouched coffee had long gone cold on the center table.Outside, the afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse. Inside, silence settled like a heavy fog.The front door clicked open.Nyra stepped in, dropping her backpack onto the couch with a relieved sigh."Finally," she muttered.
