"Why are you being so difficult? Why does it matter who gets the spot? Do you really have to make a scene and put everyone in a difficult situation?"

Gregory Webb, the department chair, leaned back in his office chair. His brows were drawn into a deep frown.

I stood in front of his desk and handed him the freshly reprinted application for the Outstanding Student Scholarship.

"According to university policy, the selection process for the scholarship is supposed to include a thorough review of each applicant's qualifications and academic record.

"Jenna drives a Porsche to school every day, carries designer bags that cost tens of thousands of dollars, and is constantly skipping class and failing courses. She doesn't meet a single criterion for this scholarship.

"But I'm an orphan, and this scholarship will cover my living expenses for the rest of the year."

I kept my voice as steady as I could, and at last, Gregory stopped twirling his pen.

"Rules are rules, but people have to be practical," he said, tapping his pen firmly against the desk. "What does a student like you know about looking at the bigger picture?

"Jenna's father just donated 500,000 dollars' worth of equipment to the department's labs last week. That equipment will help speed up research across the entire department. How is that not a good thing for everyone?"

I slowly curled my fingers into fists, my nails digging into my palms.

"So, the department can openly steal a struggling student's financial aid just because Jenna's father donated half a million dollars in equipment?"

Gregory slammed his hand against the desk so hard that coffee splashed out of his mug. He pointed at me, the last traces of his polite facade disappearing as open contempt took its place.

"You're an orphan with no one to back you up," he snarled. "Who do you think you are to come in here and tell me how to do my job?

"Let me make this clear. The department board made this decision together. It's not your place to question it!"

He leaned back in his chair again, a sneer tugging at his lips.

"I suggest you keep your mouth shut," he continued, looking at me with unmistakable arrogance. "If you keep going around making accusations and damaging the university's reputation…"

His voice trailed off.

"Believe it or not, I've got a hundred ways to make sure you never get your degree."

Silence settled over the office.

I looked at Gregory's oily, flushed face without crying or making a scene. Instead, I quietly slipped my hand into my pocket and pressed the save button on my voice recorder.

"I understand, Mr. Webb."

With that, I turned and strode out of the office.

If the proper channels for appealing the decision had failed me, then I would have to find my own way to get justice.

…

The cold autumn wind hit my face as I rubbed my stiff fingers together and boarded the bus heading toward the northern outskirts of Beyton.

That was where Evergreen Haven was located—a secluded, run-down nursing home far from the city.

It was the only place where my battered heart could finally find a moment of peace.

The moment I pushed open the rusty iron gate, I heard gentle music drifting through the courtyard.

"Olivia, you're here! Come over and tell me if I'm doing this move right!"

Nancy Jacoway, who was dressed in an old, faded workout outfit, immediately finished her routine and waved me over with a bright smile.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed all my humiliation and exhaustion down and greeted her with my brightest smile.

"Grandma Nancy, your form is even better than the professional dancers on TV."

"You're such a sweet talker," Grandma Nancy replied, poking me on the forehead.

Not far away, Otis Larsson was scratching his head over a chess endgame.

"Don't mind her, Olivia. Come over here and help me figure out this move," Grandpa Otis called. "David's been acting strange today. He's already taken two of my rooks!"

Across from him, David Wadsworth wore a faded singlet, puffing away at his pipe as he smugly hummed an old tune.

As soon as he saw me approaching, his eyes lit up. He immediately pulled a beautifully wrapped piece of imported candy from his pocket.

"Here, Olivia," he said. "Have some candy. My good-for-nothing son just brought these back from overseas. They're nice and sweet."

He practically forced the candy into my hand before he suddenly froze. His pipe stilled, and his weathered gaze locked onto mine.

"Olivia, why are your eyes red? Did someone give you a hard time?"

His voice was quiet, but there was a calm authority in it that made it impossible to ignore.

Grandpa Otis and Grandma Nancy immediately stopped what they were doing as well. All three pairs of eyes turned toward me.

I bit my lip.

"It's nothing," I said, shaking my head with a smile. "Finals are coming up, so my classes have been stressful. I've just been staying up too late."

I unwrapped the candy and popped it into my mouth, letting the sweetness spread across my tongue.

The three of them were the only family I had left in this world. I couldn't let them get dragged into the ugly mess Jenna Olsen had created.

Jenna didn't beg or struggle. She simply kept her eyes fixed on me as the police escorted her off the stage. There was fear in her eyes, along with despair. I met her gaze and walked toward her. The officers around us didn't stop me, and silence enveloped the entire auditorium. "You always thought you could walk all over people without money or connections," I whispered, leaning toward her. "But you forgot one thing. Strip away the privilege, and you're just a nobody."Jenna's whole body shook. At last, the tears she'd been holding back broke free. She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but all that came out was a desperate sob before the police led her into the patrol car waiting outside. The Olsens were eventually sent to prison, while Wadsworth Group and the relevant authorities took action to ensure they had no way to rebuild their empire.Gregory was formally investigated and disciplined, and his case exposed a much larger network of academic corrupti

Jenna snatched the microphone from Mr. Zoeller's hand, glaring at me with bloodshot eyes. "Don't let her fool you!"Her shrill voice echoed through the enormous auditorium. "She isn't some innocent victim," she continued. "She's a corporate spy!"The entire auditorium erupted in an uproar.Jenna raised a black USB drive high above her head. A vicious, almost desperate smile spread across her face. "This contains proof that she used her IT skills to steal confidential information from one of Beyton University's major research labs and sell it to foreign investors!"She's the real threat to Beyton. She belongs in prison!"The students exchanged uneasy looks and began whispering among themselves. Meanwhile, several university administrators looked visibly shaken. Confidential research was a serious matter, after all.Seeing everyone's reaction, Jenna thought she'd finally found my Achilles' heel. She plugged the USB drive into the central computer on the podium and immediately

Grandma Nancy's words landed with such force that they shattered the last bit of hope Gregory and Jenna had left. Gregory didn't even care about the red mark on his face anymore. He scrambled across the floor and dropped to his knees at Grandma Nancy's feet."Ms. Jacoway, please, let me explain! It was all a misunderstanding. The Olsen family—the Olsens forced me to do it!"Grandma Nancy took a step back, visibly disgusted. Mr. Zoeller immediately caught up and ordered the security guards to drag Gregory away. "A misunderstanding?"Grandma Nancy huffed and pointed at the documents scattered across the floor."Jenna is hereby stripped of the Outstanding Student Scholarship and her eligibility for the award," she announced. "As for you, Gregory, prepare yourself for the most thorough academic and disciplinary investigation this university can conduct."That was when Jenna finally came back to her senses. She looked at Gregory, who was crumpled on the floor, then at the old wom

Jenna and the influencers she'd brought with her were thrown out of Evergreen Haven by the bodyguards in black suits without putting up so much as a fight. However, even with blood covering her face, Jenna's eyes remained vicious.Clearly, she hadn't taken Grandpa David's phone call seriously. As far as she was concerned, everything that had happened was probably just an elaborate act put on by some old man who had hired people to scare her. When she returned to campus, she didn't back down. If anything, she became even more aggressive. She stormed into the academic affairs office and pressured Gregory to expel me immediately, accusing me of starting a violent brawl and bringing disgrace to the university. At 3:00 pm, we were called into a conference room on the top floor of the administration building.Sitting at the head of the table, Gregory pushed an official expulsion notice toward me. It was already stamped and signed. "Sign it," he ordered impatiently, glaring at me. "No

"Holy shit! Isn't that David Wadsworth, the founder of Wadsworth Group and former president of the Beyton Chamber of Commerce?""Am I seeing things? Jenna Olsen just pointed in Mr. Wadsworth's face and called him an old geezer!"Jenna hadn't even had time to read the comments on her livestream when one of the influencers behind her suddenly went weak in the knees. He dropped to the floor with a heavy thud, landing directly on the shattered glass. The influencer who was usually so loud and fearless online was now trembling violently, his face drained of color."M-Mr. Wadsworth," he stammered, his teeth chattering as he struggled to get the words out. "What are you doing here?"Jenna frowned. "What the hell is wrong with you?" she snapped, kicking him in irritation. "What are you babbling about? Mr. Wadsworth? He's just a shameless old pervert!"Before she could finish, a set of heavy, synchronized footsteps suddenly came from outside the room.Within seconds, more than a dozen

Agatha Lyons, one of the caregivers at Evergreen Haven, suddenly called me. Her voice was thick with panic, and I could hear her fighting back tears. "Olivia, you have to come!" she cried. "A bunch of young people just kicked down the front gate and stormed inside with their phones!"They're smashing everything and shoving Grandma Nancy around, saying this place is some kind of prostitution ring. Please, Olivia, you have to come help us!"I didn't even stop to grab my coat. I rushed outside, hailed a cab, and headed straight for the northern outskirts of Beyton. By the time I reached Evergreen Haven, the courtyard was already a complete wreck. Grandma Nancy's dance ribbon wand had been snapped in half and thrown onto the ground, while Grandpa Otis' chessboard had been smashed to pieces beneath someone's feet. Several of the elderly residents had been forced into a corner. They were trembling with anger. Dressed in an expensive designer outfit, Jenna stood in the middle of t
