Chapter 34: It Has to Be My Pups

Damien's POV

"Victoria?" I asked, my voice sounding like I was choking.

"She needs us. She is under attack," Kai replied.

Victoria left my ward a few minutes ago, right after my father. If anything, she could have caught up with my father. So, who could have attacked her? I thought, as I sat up on the bed, pushing the blanket off me.

I put my feet down, but before I could slip my feet into my shoes, I felt another pain in my chest, making me bend over. 

"We need to hurry," Kai said.

I stood up and exited the ward, wearing the patient's robe and barefoot. The hallway was empty. I rushed to the elevator and pressed for the garage. It soon opened, and I went inside. I reached the garage and I shifted into my wolf. My wolf was black with a white collar and very huge. It's midday, and I know a lot of people were going to freak out seeing an alpha wolf on the street, but it was the only way to get to my mate faster and save her.  I went out onto the streets, and I was met with screams, but I didn't care. I started running.

Even though both humans and werewolves lived in the city, you only get to see a wolf at night, or you hear them howl during the full moon. It's very rare to see a wolf out on the street in broad daylight. 

I run towards the nearest park. There is always a forest behind the parks. I needed to get out of the streets, as my presence was creating chaos. I ran into the park. My vicious glare had people in the park running helter-skelter. I ignored their screaming as I headed for the forest behind the park. I knew they would call security to come over. If anything, I am sure, they already have. I jumped into the forest and sprinted in the direction of my mate's location. I realised I was heading to the mining site. 

Why would Victoria come to the mining site? I thought as I got closer. Or someone abducted her and took her there to harm her? I thought. 

I got to the place and scanned the environment, growling. There was no sign of life around the abandoned place. All my senses were alive, and so was my vision. I heard a scream. A female voice, but it wasn't Victoria's. I run in the direction of the scream. I got closer to the mining area and went behind the mountain. My eyes widened at the sight that greeted me. 

Ariana was standing with her back to the mountain, holding a stick up. She looked dirty, and her clothes were soaked with blood. Growling at her were two rogue wolves.

"Get away from me," she cried, as she waved the stick in her hands at the wolves who were growling at her.

I jumped from where I stood and landed in front of her, shielding her from the rogue wolves. I growled at them, staring at the two viciously. Ariana continued to scream behind me, but I ignored her. The rogue wolves were the size of a lion, but I was much bigger and taller. I was huge, like the size of a big bear. I charged at the rogue wolves. I focused my attack on one, while the other rogue wolf tried to fight me from behind. In a split second, I wounded and killed the first rogue wolf. I shifted my attention to the second wolf. It ran into the woods, but not after I had wounded it.

I turned around searching for Ariana, but she was nowhere to be found. My fur was stained with blood. Not my blood, though.

I scanned the environment and found her running towards the empty street close to the mine. I ran after her and caught up with her in two jumps. She screamed at the sight of me and fell on her back as she took her steps to get away from me. She was scared, I can understand that, but I knew if I shifted, I would be standing before her naked. I stood there, like a tamed dog, watching her scream. 

I took my step forward, and she screamed her lungs out, after which she passed out. It was better that way. I carefully picked her up with my mouth and started walking down the streets. There was a warehouse where we kept some of our machinery for mining. It was locked with no one there unless there was work ongoing on the site. I got to the warehouse and broke the front door easily with my powerful paws. I carried Ariana in and laid her on the ground. I shifted back and picked a jumpsuit. I put it on and went to the phone. I dialled Michael's number.

"Michael, come to the mining site warehouse immediately. Bring Dr Francis with you. Make sure my family do not get wind of this," I ordered without asking him what he was doing. "You have 15 minutes," I added and ended the call.

I went back to check on Ariana. Those rogues attacked her. There was a wolf claw mark on her shoulder and another on her side of her belly. The dress she was wearing had been torn. 

She was the one under attack, why did I get the feeling my mate was the one under an attack? I thought.

"Could she be our mate? Kai asked.

"You must be nuts. Since when did wolves start having mate bonds with humans?" I replied.

"What if she is not human, like you think? I feel a connection with her. It's faint, but it's a mate bond. She is our mate," Kai said.

"No. A weakling like her can never be my mate," I blurted out, and moved away from her. "What am I even saying?" I said, running both hands through my jet black hair. "She is the very thing I hate. Human," I barked.

"How do you explain feeling her distress when she was being attacked?" Kai asked, and I moved in frustration.

"I don't know," I said, having no immediate answer, but I quickly remembered she was pregnant. "It has to be my pups," I said. "Yes, she is pregnant with my pups. That is why I felt her distress," I said, as that made sense to me.

I felt relaxed at the discovery, but my heart was racing in my chest. I was nervous. 

I get this strong desire to have her anytime I am around her. So why am I nervous at the slight chance she could be my mate? I thought and shifted my gaze to stare at her motionless body lying on the ground. 

Even in her current state, her beauty was undeniable. I shifted my gaze to her exposed legs due to her torn clothes, and I gulped. My gaze went to her chest, and I bit my lower lip, as my heart raced with a different beat. She was wounded, passed out and battling for her life, but here I am, helplessly attracted to her. Every inch of me screamed for a feel of her.

I closed my eyes and snapped out of it. I took a couple of steps backwards, away from her. 

What is wrong with me? I thought, turning around, and facing her with my back.

"The very thing that is wrong with me. Stop fighting it, Damien, I want her," Kai said.

"No, we can't have her. She is human," I said, almost yelling.

"Alpha," I heard Michael's voice.

I turned around to find Michael and Dr Francis standing at the entrance of the warehouse. I wondered how long there have been standing there and what they heard.

"A word to anyone and you are both dead," I threatened. "Check her," I said to Dr Francis.

"Michael, I want to know exactly what happened here," I said. "And secondly, I want all those guards with me today, dead," I added, and Michael just stared at me, shocked. "Get me new competent ones," I added.

"Alpha, you mean dead, as in no more life in them?" Michael asked, his shock evident in his voice, even Dr Francis shifted his gaze briefly in my direction before returning to attending to Ariana.

"Is there another meaning to dead?" I asked. "I said, I want them dead. Those idiots valued their lives more than mine," I added.

"Yes, Alpha," Michael replied.
