Everly shot down her chance at her destined to be with her chosen mate, the man she was sure would provide the best future for her. Though underappreciated, she has been working hard to make her new pack top three in the nation. But what happens when her husband reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, and she ends up getting kicked out and left in the cold with a baby on the way? The conveniently appearing mate from all those years ago, the one that told her she would regret the choice to reject him, offers his help, but can she trust him? How does he plan to get his revenge on her for shooting him down? And what about this new woman her husband has left her for; why is she suddenly interested in a married man after being with another pack for years without a peep? With females vying for her mates’ attention, not to mention the pressures of being a mother, Everly will have to figure out what matters most to her before everything is taken away for good.
View MoreI stand frozen at the entrance of our pack's land.
Because it looks like my husband, lovingly smiling down at a petite woman I've never seen before, while she holds her slightly swollen stomach with both hands and stares up at him like he was her saviour.
This is not how I pictured our reunion to be. I thought I'd run up to him, give him a big hug, then we'd go and I'd surprise him with the welcoming party I had been planning for him for the last week.
"Killian. Welcome home." I'm swallowing a lump in my throat, and willing my heart to stay in my chest while I try and figure out what's going on.
"Everly. I'm so glad you found us. There's someone I want you to meet."
"Us?" My eyes dart down to the woman he's now gently pushing towards me.
She's very pretty, with long, soft looking blonde hair, lovely thick lips and icy blue eyes. Shorter than me by a lot, she looks to be only five two. She seems sweet and soft on the surface, but I can see the glint in her eyes when our gazes finally meet.
"This is May. She was a member of the pack I went to check in on."
Two months ago, Killian had left to check on a pack that had been giving radio silence for a while. Originally we didn't think too much of it, but after three weeks of no word from them, my husband decided he needed to make sure everything was okay.
It's a good thing he went too. He called me once during his three month absence, during his first week. He told me the pack had been mostly wiped out, by one of the bigger groups of rouge wolves that roam around, stealing from packs and killing the smaller ones. I remember how I had immediately launched into what he should be doing to help, finding survivors and getting them medical care, checking the area for a waiting-to-ambush rouge. I also remember how he had cut me off, saying he already knew what to do, and that someone was calling for him so he'd have to call me back later.
He never did, and now, weeks later, I'm standing here as my husband introduced me to another woman, like I was his mother and not his wife.
"And why have you brought May home with you?" I force a smile at the woman, my eyes never straying from hers as we size each other up.
"May's husband was one of the many who were killed by the rogue wolf attack, and seeing as she is with child and has no family of her own, I felt it was only right to offer her a place here, with us."
"But we don't have a tradition of accepting new members." I look to my husband now, staring at him with what I hope to be an incredulous expression. Apparently I succeeded, because his face suddenly turned sour.
"Then let her become the first one. May has nowhere to go now that her pack is in shambles, was I just supposed to leave her there, alone and with a baby on the way? What kind of man would that make me?" He raises a brow at me, like he's making some irrefutable point. "She's just one person, and she means no one any harm. If you were a kind wife..."
My mind fades out a little as my husband rambles on about why I should let this random woman stay with us.
Killian and I have been happily married for three years. While we aren’t fated mates, we've claimed each other, and fully bonded in every secular sense. We've built the pack into what it is today. I love him, and he loves me, and I always believe nothing could ever come between us. But then May appears, and suddenly, I start to wonder how things will play out.
"Everly? Are you listening?" I shake my head a little, refocusing on Killian, who was snapping his fingers in front of my face.
"I'm sorry, I guess I'm just misunderstanding why you ONLY brought her back. Were there any other survivors? Why have you not brought them, as well?"
Killian looks a little taken aback by my sudden questing, and he pauses a little. Before he utters anything, May cuts in.
"Please, be kind to him. He was only trying to protect me. He's too nice for his own good." I have to physically stop myself from growling at May when she gently sets her hand on Killian's shoulder in comfort, her bright blue eyes gazing carefully up at me as she does. "I wouldn't want to cause problems for you, Killian. Not after everything you've done for me. I can leave."
I scoff to myself as she half turns away before my husband quickly stops her. “Please, don’t go!”
He then turns back to me, still holding onto May's arm. "She will stay. I know we aren’t fated mates, but May is not the type to fight and compete with men, she just needs my protection. You will continue to fulfill all your duties as the Luna. … one of them being helping May recover from the trauma, yes?"
His tone brooks no objection. I sigh a little, pressing my lips together and deciding to trust my husband.
"Who am I to say no to you, Killian?"
This is your pack, after all.
I'm just the one running it.
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in Sebastain’s old office, me in his chair, him on the other side of the desk. It was a weird feeling, to be looking at him from this perspective. My first instinct was to give him his chair back, but then I realized how weak that would make me look, so I fought against it. He hadn’t said anything to me since we’d come face to face, but he also hadn’t taken his eyes off of me. A few of his old pack members, mostly members from the guard, had surrounded him and started asking him questions. Where had he been, what had he been doing? Was he back for good, if not, then why was he here? Some of them were irritated sounding, and betrayed, still feeling the burn from his disappearing act. Some were curious and maybe a little hopeful he was making a comeback. I tried not to linger on that too much, reminding myself things had been a bit rocky since I’d taken over. It was only natural they’d miss the strong leader who had carried them to the top of the wer
So much paperwork. File upon file. Page upon page. It seemed like everytime someone so much as took a pack of crackers from the supplies closet I was made to fill out a form. I mean it was one of the reasons this pack was so financially stable, because no dollar was left unaccounted for. But being the one in charge of maintaining that level of thoroughness kind of sucked. It had been three days since our little encounter with the confrontational wolves at our borders. Today was supposed to be the day Killian would bring the twins by for some play time with me, but because of the growing tension, I had told him not to come. The same men had been seen multiple times lingering near the border late at night, sneaking around, probably trying to find a weak spot in the guard system. But because of their presence, I’d only increased the number of guards we had on the borders, and made sure we had a twenty four seven rotation of wolves keeping a close eye. The other’s have been very cooper
“Having any morning sickness? Lower back pain?” “No throwing up so far, and no more than usual.” I answered the obstetrician who was currently asking me questions as she tried to get a picture of the baby inside me. I was laid back in one of their sticky, plastic covered seats, my shirt lifted and my pants unbuttoned. “That’s great. Let me know if anything changes, okay?” I nod, giving her a tight smile as my eyes flick back to the sonogram screen.“Anything?” I ask. “Mmm it won’t be the best image because it looks like your baby is hiding from us, but I can get you one today. If you’d like.” She says, stopping her sonogram probe that had been gliding over my exposed belly to show me the small, barely recognizable life form inside me. The image was black and white, grainy too. I remember when I had gotten one for the twins I had been so excited at any chance of seeing them at all. Now I was wondering when they were going to get some better equipment for this medical facility, becau
Three days later and I was starting to get nervous that Beatrice wasn’t actually going to accept my offer. I guess I just kind of assumed most, if not all wolves would jump at the opportunity to be Alpha. Even though I myself was in the middle of trying to hand off the title to someone else. Either way, I’d pretty much expected her to sleep on it, and come back the next day, full of energy and ready to lead her people. I was not expecting her to go full on ghost on me, avoiding me everytime I came within fifty feet of her. I had spotted her across the training grounds just now, and had waved to her as I began to approach. She had quickly turned to one of the other guards she’d been with, said something, and darted off into the trees before I had time to talk to her. So I was currently just lingering around the training grounds, waiting to see if she’d come back. If she didn’t want the Alpha spot, that was fine, I guess. But I needed to know for sure before I moved onto someone else
“You’re kidding, right?” Beatrice asks me after a moment of staring at me with a slack jaw. I consider, then shake my head “Seems like a weird thing to kid about.” I say earnestly. She laughs a little incredulously, shaking her head. “Why?” She finally asks. I shrug a little. “Well, I don’t know you well enough quite yet to completely hand it over to you, but from what I’ve seen so far, I’m at the very least interested.” She looks like she’s having a hard time believing my words, which I really don’t understand. She seems strong, physically and mentally. Seems smart and knowledgeable about her pack. People seem to listen to her, respect and look up to her. I still wanted to get to know her a little better to make sure she wasn’t going to make the personality shift all my previous candidates had made. But there was really good potential in her, that much I could tell for sure.“This just seems… out of nowhere.” She says, sitting back in her seat a little.“I mean, not really. I’ve b
We walked into my office, Beatrice close behind as I held the door open for her. She mutters a quiet “thanks” and I move behind the desk as she plops into the chair on the other side.“So.” I say once we’re sat. “Tell me about yourself.” She raises her eyebrow a little, like she was expecting something else, which I’m sure she was. “Uh. I mean… What do you want to know?”She rubs at the back of her neck a little, looking suddenly awkward. “Anything. Where you grew up. What your parents are like, what you spend your time doing.” “Well. I grew up here, in Sebastian's pack. He… found me, after my pack was wiped out by a group of rogues.” Her face changes a little when she brings up her former Alpha, contorting into a pained, regretful expression. “I think I was seven when he found me. He was barely a teenager himself, but I still remember how big he had seemed to me when he’d first found me tucked away in a bush. I don’t even know how long I’d been hiding, but he’d said it looked like
