Clara POV

The phone rang on the other end as I placed it close to my ear, my palm sweaty and shaking. Sandra, my husband’s secretary, took the call and we exchanged pleasantries.

“Ma’am,” she continued. “Mr Clark left the office four hours ago. He mentioned having something very important to attend to.”

Important. The word hit me like a slap.

I forced a smile into my voice, even though my lips were trembling.

“Oh. Alright. Thank you, Sandra.

I ended the call before she could hear the crack in my voice, and threw the phone on the dining table, echoing a dull thud in the extremely quiet house.

My eyes fell at the clock on the wall. Ten o’clock. At night. He’d been gone for hours and didn’t even bother to call.

Today wasn’t just any day, it was our wedding anniversary.

Five years of marriage, five years of me trying, waiting and hopeful. He would look everywhere but at me. I had waited all these years, hoping he’ll eventually come around.

My chest tightened as I looked at the dining table I had spent the whole day preparing all alone and I didn’t mind because this was my special day, our special day.

The roast chicken sat untouched, its nice-inviting aroma now cold and stale. The empty wine glass still sparkled. The candles had burned to wax.

I pressed a hand to my mouth, fighting back the tears that were already forming in my throat.

What could possibly be more important than me? More important than us? I asked myself. No answer came.

I pulled out a chair and sat heavily. What was I even expecting?

Of course he wouldn’t show. He never did. Still, some foolish part of me had believed tonight might be different. That maybe, just maybe, he’d remember what today meant.

But then again, our marriage never meant anything to him. He was never interested in me and I knew. But every day of my life, I have hoped that he will eventually find something loveable in me.

He always found a way to remind me that it wasn’t love that bound us together, but his grandfather’s command, his grandfather’s will, my will. To Bruno, I wasn’t a wife, I was a chain.

And yet, he was my first love. The boy I loved from afar before fate brought us together. The man I married with hope, even when he gave me nothing in return.

I pat my own back for comfort, because no one else would. I told myself the same lie I always did, that maybe tomorrow he would soften, maybe tomorrow he would come around.

But night came and I fell asleep from waiting, crying, hoping he would show up, but he never did.

The slam of the front door jolted me awake. My neck ached from the awkward angle of sleeping on the chair.

The table was still set like a cruel reminder of my stupidity.

Then I heard footsteps, his footsteps.

“Bruno?” I got up, reaching out to hug him. The hug was one-sided, but this was something I was already used to.

“Good morning ,” I said, reaching out to collect his briefcase but he pulled away. He seemed pissed and irritated, a part of him I was already used to. But for some reason, he seemed more irritated and distant today.

I wasn’t ready for what may come if I tried to question him so I just played along, wanting to still retain my position as the ‘good wife.’

He moved towards the dining table, it was still dressed, I hadn’t touched a thing from last night. Part of me wished he’d see it and feel bad or at least, feel an atom of remorse. But none of it happened.

“And what’s this?” He asked, clearly irritated.

My chest sent a sharp pain to my brain, as if a message had just been passed.

“Babe…It was, it was our anniversary yesterday.” I moved closer to him. “and I was waiting for you, did something happen, where have you been?”

His eyes flashed me like burning flames. He dropped his suitcase on the couch, his shirt slightly undone, his tie gone. No apology. No guilt.

“Why? Are you questioning me now?” He snapped. “And why the hell did you call Sandra? Are you monitoring me now?”

I froze. “Monitoring you? I was worried. It was supposed to be a special day for us.”

He scoffed.

“Oh. Anniversary?” He said it like it didn’t even mean anything, pushed his hair behind with his hand.

“I’m tired, Clara. Tired of these marital rules you cling to. I was never a part of this marriage. It wasn’t mine, it was yours and my grandfather’s.

My throat tightened. “Five years. I’ve spent all these years trying to make this work. To make us work. Five years trying to love you even when you wouldn’t let me.”

He looked at me irritated. “And what have you done in those five years? Tell me. Aside from sitting at home and of course cooking and eating. What else are you good at?”

He stepped closer and continued, his voice rising.

“I’m tired of waking up everyday to the same dull life. The same dull wife. I need someone who can actually stand beside me. Someone presentable. Someone that fits my own world. Not just some stand in wife”

My heart ached. At this point, it felt like a knife had just been pierced through it. I just couldn’t control my tears at this moment, streaming down my face.

And then, he pulled a crisp envelope from his briefcase, tossed it onto the table between us.

“That is it! An end to all of these”

“What is- that?” I asked, still don’t want to believe what I think might be in there.

“You do know how to read, don’t you?”

My hands were trembling as I picked it up, my vision blurring while I fought with the words at the top of the papers.

Dylan POV “You owned that place?!” “Yeah” I nodded and continued. “Apparently, I bought it off after your comment the other day. I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I had to add to my collections” “You bought the building because of a passing comment i made?!” “When you talk Clara, I listen. Always” That was our last conversation and since the moment we got into the car, she had just sat quietly, staring outside of the window with her expression blank. I have seen Clara at her strongest. Bold in the business room, fearless in surgeries and soft with child in the orphanage home but right now, there was something about her that looked shattered. It must have been very difficult when she was married to him. I can’t even imagine how much pain she had to bury just to survive. I hated Bruno, hated how her presence tore through her strength. Maybe I shouldn't have let her meet with him, maybe I should have blown up his face when he tried to talk down on her but Clara, she wouldn’t l

  • The Clapback of An Ex-wife    Chapter 10

Clara POV It has been more than thirty minutes since myself and Dylan arrived at this very big hotel, waiting to meet with Bruno. Just after I was done with Zara, I informed my Secretary to set up a meeting with him and just as I expected he hadn't showed up. Maybe the weight of how he treated me in the past, held him back. or he was too ashamed to show his face. That was what I thought before he finally strode in. Next to him was a lady with an unfamiliar face but with the way she was dressed, I could tell she was his secretary. And Bruno, he was still looking good as always. His well tailored suit hung perfectly on his body, his jaw was clean and well shaven. His black hair fell in front of his face, making him look like some fashion model and for some reason, it felt like he hadn't aged all these years. But behind those features was a man full of himself and with pride, who is a cheater and a liar. I knew better not to let his face deceive me one more time. “ You are late”

  • The Clapback of An Ex-wife    Chapter 9

Clara POV The smell of antiseptic and the beeping of machines were nothing new in my life anymore. I stood next to the hospital bed, watching the little child on the bed, whose chest rose and fall weakly. Thank goodness I'd left the meeting as soon as possible, if not the case might have turned out differently. I swallowed hard the lump formed in my throat as I adjusted the IV line. Memories flashed before my eyes again. Memories from the moment the little child was brought into the orphanage. Zara, that was her name. She was just eight, fragile and quiet but with the eyes of sadness no child should ever have. She was brought in barely two months ago, scared, malnourished with a compiling file of medical records.Zara fought against Leukemia- blood cancer and this has made her lose so much strength. I’d promised Zara on the day she arrived, that she would be okay, that I would do everything in my power to make sure she gets her bone marrow transplant in which I was not stopping

  • The Clapback of An Ex-wife    Chapter 8

Clara POV I wasn’t just an ordinary Doctor and my life never ended around the hospital white wall. Aside building a power name around my career- the most flawless surgeon records. I’d also been able to build a legacy of a businesswoman owning multiple estate properties, expanding my portfolio around real estate development. I didn’t just stop at saving life alone, I made sure I created legacies, signed million dollar deals and then watched myself soar high in a room I was once scared of. One promise I made to myself was, Never again. Never again would I allow disrespect. Never again would I be seen as weak or disposable. I have been there before- Scared, timid, unsure but not anymore. I took a deep breath and gently straightened my black sleek dress. “Are you okay?” Dylan, who stood next to me, asked, looking worried. Yeah, I understand his worries but believe me I’d prepared for this a long time ago. Since the moment Dylan told me about the deal, I’d been looking forward t

  • The Clapback of An Ex-wife    Chapter 7

Bruno POV I have been staring at my laptop for God knows how many hours- Not work, Not some presentation but stuck on Clara’s profile. How did this happen? A doctor?! A business mogul? She even owns an orphanage home?. The same woman I once dismissed, betrayed, crushed now stood at the peak of the world, the one I barely know nothing about. Isn’t she dead? I mean, that was what I was told. “Shit” I slammed the laptop closed. Rested my head backwards staring up at the ceiling. So many thoughts ran through my head, both the ones I understood and the ones I couldn’t even put together. I got up the chair, pacing around the room panicking, picked my phone and searched for her name again after again. Dr Clara Benson. At this point I was beginning to act reckless. Actually, it was hard to believe. Hard to know that the woman who once couldn’t do without me now lives without my presence. “Goodnight sir”- the sudden voice caused me to halt. Looking behind at Elnora who had already

Bruno POV I adjusted my necktie immediately I’d stepped out of the boardroom. The year's quarterly review had gone better than expected, the numbers were doing well, better than the last years, clients were satisfied, investors were pleased. Everything was perfect. I fell into the leather seat in my office, slightly stretching my body. It has been a very long day. A sudden notification buzzed on my phone, checking it out, I realized I have got twelve missed calls from Elnora, the nanny. My chest tightened and immediately I jolted up the chair. Something was wrong. I dialed back immediately and she picked after the first ring. “Sir, ThankGoodness!” Her voice came from the other side of the phone with a brief sign of relief. “It Nellie, she collapsed and she is not responding”“What do you mean Collapsed?” “I didn’t know what to do… one minute she was playing around and the other she was coughing so hard till she collapsed.” She explained, her voice shaking. “Have you called th
