LOGINChapter 6
REIGNS "No, wait," I said. "Mama, you don't have to—" "Take it." She put it in my hand and closed my fingers around it. "It's just metal, Reign. It was never him. He was never really in it." "I'll get it back. I promise. I'll buy it back." "I know you will." She touched my face. "Whatever you're doing, be careful. That family eats people." I kissed her forehead and left before she could see my face. The pawn shop gave me less than it was worth. Of course they did. The man looked at me, looked at the chain, and said a number that made me want to scream. I took it anyway. On the bus home, I sat at the back and cried with my face turned to the window. I cried for the chain, for my mother, for the fat bird in the mango tree she couldn't see anymore. I cried until the woman next to me offered me a sweet. Then I wiped my face, bought a dark green dress from the market with the tags still on, and borrowed heels from my neighbor. I told myself it was armor. --- Vance Tower was forty floors of black glass right on the water. Standing in front of it made me feel very small. The security guard at the door looked at my market dress and my borrowed shoes and laughed. "You have an appointment?" "No. But I need to see Mr. Cassian Vance." "Everybody needs to see Mr. Vance." He folded his arms. "Nobody sees Mr. Vance." "Please. It's about the Ashford family." "Madam, go home." I didn't go home. I sat on a bench across the lobby and waited. I watched people in suits come and go. I watched the lifts go up and down. One hour passed. Then two. My feet hurt in the borrowed shoes. Then a woman walked in with a stack of files and a badge that said Legal. She went straight to the front desk and said, "I have papers from Adeyemi and Partners for Mr. Vance's office." Adeyemi. My father's lawyer. I waited until she left. Then I stood up, fixed my dress, and walked to the front desk like I belonged there. "Sorry," I said, a little out of breath. "I'm from Adeyemi's office. My colleague just dropped the papers, but she forgot the second set." I held up my handbag like there were papers in it. "Mr. Adeyemi said I have to give them to Mr. Vance's assistant myself. He'll kill me if I don't." The receptionist looked tired. She looked at my face, then at the clock. "Fortieth floor," she said, and gave me a visitor card. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in the lift. Forty floors. The numbers climbed so slowly. I watched myself in the mirrored wall. I looked like a girl pretending to be someone else. Ding. --- His assistant was a thin man in glasses. He stood up as soon as I stepped out. "Can I help you?" "I need to see Mr. Vance." "Do you have an appointment?" "No." "Then I'm sorry, but—" He was already picking up his phone to call security. "My name is Reign Ashford." He stopped. "Tell him Richard Ashford's other daughter is here," I said. "Tell him I have an offer." The assistant looked at me for a long time. Then he pressed a button on his phone and said something quietly. I couldn't hear the answer. He put the phone down. His face said he didn't understand it either. "He'll give you five minutes." --- Cassian Vance's office was all glass and grey stone. It was cold, not just the air but everything. There were no pictures on the walls, no plants, nothing personal. Just one long black desk and a view of the whole sea behind it. He was sitting at the desk reading papers. He didn't look up when I came in. He was more handsome than his pictures, which was annoying. Sharp face. Dark hair. His sleeves were rolled up and his tie was loose, the only thing about him that wasn't perfect. I stood in the middle of the room. He kept reading. One minute passed. Then another. I understood. He was waiting to see if I would talk first, or leave. I did neither. I stood there. Finally, he turned a page and said, without looking up, "You have four minutes left, Miss Ashford." "Then I'll be quick." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "Marry me instead of her." The pen in his hand stopped. "You want the Ashford shares," I said. "The deal says one Vance brother marries each daughter. It doesn't matter which daughter goes to which brother, not really. The shares still unlock. You still get your ships." He said nothing. "I won't ask for love," I went on. "I won't ask for money. I won't ask you to come home at night, or talk to me, or even look at me. I'll sign anything you want. You get the same deal." I took a breath. "And she loses." Silence. The sea moved behind him, grey and slow. A clock ticked somewhere. I could hear my own breathing. He put his pen down, slowly. Then, for the first time, Cassian Vance looked up at me. His eyes were dark and flat and very calm. It felt like being looked at by a winter sky. I wanted to step back. I didn't. He looked at me for so long I started to count. Ten seconds. Twenty. Thirty. Then he asked one question. "Why do you hate her so much?" I opened my mouth to answer. And behind me, the office door opened. I turned around. Odalys was standing in the doorway in a white dress, holding a leather folder against her chest. Her face was completely still. She had heard everything.Chapter 10REIGNSWhen I got up to my flat, there was a small box sitting on the floor outside my door.It was plain brown cardboard. No name. No note. No stamp.I looked up and down the dark hallway. Nobody.I picked it up and opened it.Inside, on a piece of folded cloth, was my mother's gold chain. The one I sold. The one my father gave her the year I was born. It was the same chain, with the same small scratch on the clasp.I stood in the hallway holding it and didn't understand. I turned the box over. I checked the cloth. There was nothing. Nobody knew I had sold it. Nobody except the man at the pawn shop. And whoever had followed me there.I didn't sleep. I sat on the mattress with the chain in my hand and my phone in the other, and I scrolled the news because I couldn't stop myself. Then I saw the headline, and my whole body went cold.ASHFORD HEIRESS ANNOUNCES BROTHER'S RETURNThere was a picture of Odalys outside the Ashford office, calm and perfect in grey. Under it, a state
Chapter 9REIGNSI woke up to my phone buzzing. It didn't stop. It buzzed and buzzed against the floor beside my mattress until it slid off the edge. I picked it up and squinted at the cracked screen. Forty-three notifications, from people I hadn't spoken to in years. Old school friends, a girl from the restaurant, a cousin of a neighbor.Have you seen this??Reign is this you???OMG girl what happenedI opened the first link.It was me.It was me on the top floor of Vance Tower, in the green dress, with Odalys dragging me by the hair. Someone had filmed it from behind a desk. The video was shaky, but you could see everything. My face. The price tag in Odalys's hand. The slap. The caption said, in big white letters:MISTRESS'S DAUGHTER TRIES TO STEAL SISTER'S BILLIONAIRE 💀It had two million views. It had been up for nine hours.I watched the whole thing with my heart in my throat. I waited for the end. For the part where she pushed me. For the part where I hung over forty floors of
Chapter 8ODALYSReign's face changed. For two days, I had watched her stay calm. At the funeral, at the will reading, even in that dirty hospital ward, she had held her face still. It had driven me mad.Now it cracked."You want to talk about blood?" she said. Her voice was low and shaking. "Fine. Let's talk about blood. Do you want to know what's in the second drawer of his desk, Odalys?"I went cold."My baby pictures," she said. "All of them. From the day I was born. My first steps. My first day of school. He kept them in his desk and looked at them every night. My mother told me. He told her.""Shut up.""Did he keep yours? Did he ever keep yours?" She stepped closer. "He never loved you. He paid for you. You were the daughter he had to have. I was the one he wanted."I slapped her.It was so hard that her head snapped to the side. The sound echoed across the whole floor. When she turned back, her bottom lip was split, and a thin line of blood ran down her chin. She stared at me.
Chapter 7ODALYS I came to Vance Tower to sign my engagement papers. That was all. It was a simple meeting. Mr. Adeyemi had drawn up the agreement, and Cassian's lawyers had checked it. All I had to do was walk in, sign my name, shake his hand, and leave. I had planned it down to the minute. Twenty minutes in his office, then lunch, then home.I didn't want to marry Cassian Vance. I didn't want to marry anyone. But I wanted to lose my father's company even less. So I put on my white dress, I did my hair, and I told myself it was just business. Just one more paper to sign. The assistant looked scared when I stepped out of the lift."Miss Ashford. You're early.""I'm on time. Is he free?""He, um…" The man looked at the door, then back at me. "He has someone with him.""Who?"He didn't answer. That was when I knew something was wrong.I walked past him to the office door. It wasn't fully closed. And through the gap, I heard a voice I would know anywhere."Marry me instead of her."I st

Chapter 5REIGNSI didn't sleep that night. I sat on the hospital floor with my back against my mother's bed and my cracked phone in my hand, and I read everything I could find about the Vance brothers.I started with Rhett, because I wanted to know exactly how much I should hate him.It didn't take long. He was everywhere. There was a new picture almost every week. Rhett on a yacht with a girl in a red bikini. Rhett outside a club at three in the morning with a girl in a silver dress. Rhett at a football match, a car launch, a birthday party, and every time a different girl on his arm, a different hand on his chest. The girls never lasted. I found one interview with a model who cried on camera. She said he took her to Dubai for a weekend, told her she was special, and then blocked her number on the flight home. She found out from his driver.Another girl wrote a long post about him. She said he never remembered her name, and he called her "sweetheart" the whole time because it was ea
