LOGINChapter 7
ODALYS I came to Vance Tower to sign my engagement papers. That was all. It was a simple meeting. Mr. Adeyemi had drawn up the agreement, and Cassian's lawyers had checked it. All I had to do was walk in, sign my name, shake his hand, and leave. I had planned it down to the minute. Twenty minutes in his office, then lunch, then home. I didn't want to marry Cassian Vance. I didn't want to marry anyone. But I wanted to lose my father's company even less. So I put on my white dress, I did my hair, and I told myself it was just business. Just one more paper to sign. The assistant looked scared when I stepped out of the lift. "Miss Ashford. You're early." "I'm on time. Is he free?" "He, um…" The man looked at the door, then back at me. "He has someone with him." "Who?" He didn't answer. That was when I knew something was wrong. I walked past him to the office door. It wasn't fully closed. And through the gap, I heard a voice I would know anywhere. "Marry me instead of her." I stopped with my hand on the door. "You want the Ashford shares. The deal says one Vance brother marries each daughter. It doesn't matter which daughter goes to which brother…" I stood there and listened to every word. "I won't ask for love. I won't ask for money… You get the same deal. And she loses." Something went hot and sharp inside my chest. My fingers tightened on the leather folder until it bent. I had seen this before. Not with my eyes, but I had seen it all my life. A woman walking into a place she didn't belong and taking what wasn't hers. A woman smiling at a man who was promised to someone else. Her mother did it to my mother. And now here she was, in a cheap green dress, doing it to me. Like mother, like daughter. I pushed the door open. --- Reign turned around. When she saw me, her face went pale. Good. I didn't look at Cassian. I didn't look at anything but her. I walked across that cold grey office, slow and calm, and my heels were the only sound in the room. "Odalys," she said. "I—" I grabbed her by the hair. She screamed. I didn't care. I wound my fingers into the back of her hair and pulled, and I dragged her toward the door. She stumbled on her borrowed heels and grabbed at my wrist, but I didn't let go. "Let go of me! Odalys, let go!" I pulled her through the door, past the frozen assistant, and out into the open hall. The top floor of Vance Tower was built around a huge open space in the middle. The atrium went all the way down, forty floors, to a fountain in the lobby that looked as small as a coin from up here. A glass railing ran around the edge. On the other side of the hall were rows of desks, with staff in suits and people on phones. Every single one of them looked up. That's what I wanted. I let go of Reign's hair and pushed her into the middle of the hall, right where they could all see. "Everyone," I said. My voice was clear and loud. "Look at her. I want you to see her." Reign was breathing hard. Her hair was falling out of its tie. She put a hand on the back of her head where I'd pulled. "This is Reign," I said to the room. "My father's other daughter. Do you know where she came from? Her mother was his mistress. He paid her. He paid her rent, he paid her bills, he paid for everything, for twenty-four years, while my mother cried herself to death in our house." Someone gasped. A woman at the nearest desk put her hand over her mouth. "And today," I said, "she came here to steal my fiancé. She came to his office in her little green dress and begged him to marry her instead of me." I laughed. "She's doing exactly what her mother did. It's in her blood." "Stop it," Reign said. "Why? Are you ashamed?" I walked around her slowly, in a circle, like she was something on display. "You should be." Then I saw it. At the back of her neck, sticking out from the collar of the dress, was a small white tag. I reached out and ripped it off. Reign spun around. "Don't—" I held it up high so the whole floor could see. The price was written on it in black marker. It wasn't even much. "She didn't even buy it," I said. "She was going to return it. She was going to wear it for one day to steal a billionaire, and then take it back to the market for a refund." A few people laughed. Just a few. It was enough. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw phones come up. One, two, then five. People were filming. I let them.Chapter 10REIGNSWhen I got up to my flat, there was a small box sitting on the floor outside my door.It was plain brown cardboard. No name. No note. No stamp.I looked up and down the dark hallway. Nobody.I picked it up and opened it.Inside, on a piece of folded cloth, was my mother's gold chain. The one I sold. The one my father gave her the year I was born. It was the same chain, with the same small scratch on the clasp.I stood in the hallway holding it and didn't understand. I turned the box over. I checked the cloth. There was nothing. Nobody knew I had sold it. Nobody except the man at the pawn shop. And whoever had followed me there.I didn't sleep. I sat on the mattress with the chain in my hand and my phone in the other, and I scrolled the news because I couldn't stop myself. Then I saw the headline, and my whole body went cold.ASHFORD HEIRESS ANNOUNCES BROTHER'S RETURNThere was a picture of Odalys outside the Ashford office, calm and perfect in grey. Under it, a state
Chapter 9REIGNSI woke up to my phone buzzing. It didn't stop. It buzzed and buzzed against the floor beside my mattress until it slid off the edge. I picked it up and squinted at the cracked screen. Forty-three notifications, from people I hadn't spoken to in years. Old school friends, a girl from the restaurant, a cousin of a neighbor.Have you seen this??Reign is this you???OMG girl what happenedI opened the first link.It was me.It was me on the top floor of Vance Tower, in the green dress, with Odalys dragging me by the hair. Someone had filmed it from behind a desk. The video was shaky, but you could see everything. My face. The price tag in Odalys's hand. The slap. The caption said, in big white letters:MISTRESS'S DAUGHTER TRIES TO STEAL SISTER'S BILLIONAIRE 💀It had two million views. It had been up for nine hours.I watched the whole thing with my heart in my throat. I waited for the end. For the part where she pushed me. For the part where I hung over forty floors of
Chapter 8ODALYSReign's face changed. For two days, I had watched her stay calm. At the funeral, at the will reading, even in that dirty hospital ward, she had held her face still. It had driven me mad.Now it cracked."You want to talk about blood?" she said. Her voice was low and shaking. "Fine. Let's talk about blood. Do you want to know what's in the second drawer of his desk, Odalys?"I went cold."My baby pictures," she said. "All of them. From the day I was born. My first steps. My first day of school. He kept them in his desk and looked at them every night. My mother told me. He told her.""Shut up.""Did he keep yours? Did he ever keep yours?" She stepped closer. "He never loved you. He paid for you. You were the daughter he had to have. I was the one he wanted."I slapped her.It was so hard that her head snapped to the side. The sound echoed across the whole floor. When she turned back, her bottom lip was split, and a thin line of blood ran down her chin. She stared at me.

Chapter 6REIGNS"No, wait," I said. "Mama, you don't have to—""Take it." She put it in my hand and closed my fingers around it. "It's just metal, Reign. It was never him. He was never really in it.""I'll get it back. I promise. I'll buy it back.""I know you will." She touched my face. "Whatever you're doing, be careful. That family eats people."I kissed her forehead and left before she could see my face. The pawn shop gave me less than it was worth. Of course they did. The man looked at me, looked at the chain, and said a number that made me want to scream. I took it anyway. On the bus home, I sat at the back and cried with my face turned to the window. I cried for the chain, for my mother, for the fat bird in the mango tree she couldn't see anymore. I cried until the woman next to me offered me a sweet. Then I wiped my face, bought a dark green dress from the market with the tags still on, and borrowed heels from my neighbor.I told myself it was armor.---Vance Tower was forty
Chapter 5REIGNSI didn't sleep that night. I sat on the hospital floor with my back against my mother's bed and my cracked phone in my hand, and I read everything I could find about the Vance brothers.I started with Rhett, because I wanted to know exactly how much I should hate him.It didn't take long. He was everywhere. There was a new picture almost every week. Rhett on a yacht with a girl in a red bikini. Rhett outside a club at three in the morning with a girl in a silver dress. Rhett at a football match, a car launch, a birthday party, and every time a different girl on his arm, a different hand on his chest. The girls never lasted. I found one interview with a model who cried on camera. She said he took her to Dubai for a weekend, told her she was special, and then blocked her number on the flight home. She found out from his driver.Another girl wrote a long post about him. She said he never remembered her name, and he called her "sweetheart" the whole time because it was ea
