LOGINChapter 8
ODALYS Reign's face changed. For two days, I had watched her stay calm. At the funeral, at the will reading, even in that dirty hospital ward, she had held her face still. It had driven me mad. Now it cracked. "You want to talk about blood?" she said. Her voice was low and shaking. "Fine. Let's talk about blood. Do you want to know what's in the second drawer of his desk, Odalys?" I went cold. "My baby pictures," she said. "All of them. From the day I was born. My first steps. My first day of school. He kept them in his desk and looked at them every night. My mother told me. He told her." "Shut up." "Did he keep yours? Did he ever keep yours?" She stepped closer. "He never loved you. He paid for you. You were the daughter he had to have. I was the one he wanted." I slapped her. It was so hard that her head snapped to the side. The sound echoed across the whole floor. When she turned back, her bottom lip was split, and a thin line of blood ran down her chin. She stared at me. Then she put both hands on my chest and shoved me back. I stumbled one step. My heel caught. For a second, the whole room tilted. And then I stopped thinking. I went forward and shoved her with both hands, as hard as I could. She flew backwards. Her borrowed shoes slid on the smooth floor. Her back hit the glass railing with a heavy thud, and the railing wasn't high enough. Her body bent right over it. Her feet came off the floor. For one second, Reign was hanging over the open drop. Forty floors of empty air sat under her head. Somebody screamed. Then everybody screamed. Her arms were flying. Her hair fell down into the empty space. One of her shoes slipped off her foot and fell. I watched it drop. It fell and fell and fell, and I never heard it land. And I didn't move. I stood there with my hands still out in front of me, and I did not move. Reign twisted. Her fingers found the top of the rail. She grabbed it and pulled, and she dragged herself back over the edge. She fell onto the floor on her hands and knees, shaking, gasping, one foot bare. The whole floor was silent except for her breathing. I looked down at my hands. Here is the truth. I have never told anyone this, and I never will. In that one second, when she was hanging over the edge, a small cold part of me wanted her to fall. It wasn't all of me. Just a small part. But it was there, and it was real, and it was the most frightening thing I had ever felt in my life. I put my hands down by my sides so no one would see them shake. --- "Odalys." Cassian was standing in the doorway of his office. I didn't know how long he had been there. He looked at Reign on the floor. Then he looked at me. His face showed nothing, no anger, no shock. He just looked. He opened his mouth to speak. "Back off," I said. He paused. I turned to face him, and I made sure my voice was steady and loud enough for every phone in the room. "Don't you dare. I'm not doing this because I love you. I don't love you. I don't even care about you." I lifted my chin. "But I will not lose what is mine to her. Not my company, not my name, not one single thing my father left me. Not to her. Not to anyone. Do you understand?" Cassian looked at me for a long moment. He didn't answer. He just lifted one hand and signaled to the guards by the lift. Two of them came and took Reign by the arms. She didn't fight this time. She could barely stand. They lifted her up and walked her toward the lift. Her split lip was bleeding onto the green dress. Her hair was everywhere. She was limping on one bare foot. People kept filming the whole way. At the lift, she turned her head and looked back at me. Just once. There was nothing in her eyes. No anger, no tears. Just nothing. The doors closed. Her other shoe was still lying on the floor by the railing. --- The staff went back to their desks slowly. Nobody looked at me. The hall got quiet again, like nothing had happened. I stood by the railing. I didn't look down. I held out my folder to Cassian. "The papers. We can sign them now." He didn't take them. Instead, he turned to his assistant, who was still standing frozen by his desk. "Pull the camera footage from this floor," Cassian said quietly. "All of it. The last thirty minutes. Save it on the private server. Nobody else touches it." "Yes, sir." The assistant ran. My stomach turned. "Why do you need the footage?" Cassian walked toward me. He stopped right beside me at the railing and looked down into the atrium, at the tiny fountain far below, where my sister's shoe had fallen. Then he turned his head and looked at me with those dark, calm eyes. "Your father came to see me," he said. "Three weeks before he died." I couldn't breathe. "He told me you would do something like this," Cassian said. "He said that when the time came, I should watch you." He paused. "Not her."Chapter 10REIGNSWhen I got up to my flat, there was a small box sitting on the floor outside my door.It was plain brown cardboard. No name. No note. No stamp.I looked up and down the dark hallway. Nobody.I picked it up and opened it.Inside, on a piece of folded cloth, was my mother's gold chain. The one I sold. The one my father gave her the year I was born. It was the same chain, with the same small scratch on the clasp.I stood in the hallway holding it and didn't understand. I turned the box over. I checked the cloth. There was nothing. Nobody knew I had sold it. Nobody except the man at the pawn shop. And whoever had followed me there.I didn't sleep. I sat on the mattress with the chain in my hand and my phone in the other, and I scrolled the news because I couldn't stop myself. Then I saw the headline, and my whole body went cold.ASHFORD HEIRESS ANNOUNCES BROTHER'S RETURNThere was a picture of Odalys outside the Ashford office, calm and perfect in grey. Under it, a state
Chapter 9REIGNSI woke up to my phone buzzing. It didn't stop. It buzzed and buzzed against the floor beside my mattress until it slid off the edge. I picked it up and squinted at the cracked screen. Forty-three notifications, from people I hadn't spoken to in years. Old school friends, a girl from the restaurant, a cousin of a neighbor.Have you seen this??Reign is this you???OMG girl what happenedI opened the first link.It was me.It was me on the top floor of Vance Tower, in the green dress, with Odalys dragging me by the hair. Someone had filmed it from behind a desk. The video was shaky, but you could see everything. My face. The price tag in Odalys's hand. The slap. The caption said, in big white letters:MISTRESS'S DAUGHTER TRIES TO STEAL SISTER'S BILLIONAIRE 💀It had two million views. It had been up for nine hours.I watched the whole thing with my heart in my throat. I waited for the end. For the part where she pushed me. For the part where I hung over forty floors of

Chapter 7ODALYS I came to Vance Tower to sign my engagement papers. That was all. It was a simple meeting. Mr. Adeyemi had drawn up the agreement, and Cassian's lawyers had checked it. All I had to do was walk in, sign my name, shake his hand, and leave. I had planned it down to the minute. Twenty minutes in his office, then lunch, then home.I didn't want to marry Cassian Vance. I didn't want to marry anyone. But I wanted to lose my father's company even less. So I put on my white dress, I did my hair, and I told myself it was just business. Just one more paper to sign. The assistant looked scared when I stepped out of the lift."Miss Ashford. You're early.""I'm on time. Is he free?""He, um…" The man looked at the door, then back at me. "He has someone with him.""Who?"He didn't answer. That was when I knew something was wrong.I walked past him to the office door. It wasn't fully closed. And through the gap, I heard a voice I would know anywhere."Marry me instead of her."I st
Chapter 6REIGNS"No, wait," I said. "Mama, you don't have to—""Take it." She put it in my hand and closed my fingers around it. "It's just metal, Reign. It was never him. He was never really in it.""I'll get it back. I promise. I'll buy it back.""I know you will." She touched my face. "Whatever you're doing, be careful. That family eats people."I kissed her forehead and left before she could see my face. The pawn shop gave me less than it was worth. Of course they did. The man looked at me, looked at the chain, and said a number that made me want to scream. I took it anyway. On the bus home, I sat at the back and cried with my face turned to the window. I cried for the chain, for my mother, for the fat bird in the mango tree she couldn't see anymore. I cried until the woman next to me offered me a sweet. Then I wiped my face, bought a dark green dress from the market with the tags still on, and borrowed heels from my neighbor.I told myself it was armor.---Vance Tower was forty
Chapter 5REIGNSI didn't sleep that night. I sat on the hospital floor with my back against my mother's bed and my cracked phone in my hand, and I read everything I could find about the Vance brothers.I started with Rhett, because I wanted to know exactly how much I should hate him.It didn't take long. He was everywhere. There was a new picture almost every week. Rhett on a yacht with a girl in a red bikini. Rhett outside a club at three in the morning with a girl in a silver dress. Rhett at a football match, a car launch, a birthday party, and every time a different girl on his arm, a different hand on his chest. The girls never lasted. I found one interview with a model who cried on camera. She said he took her to Dubai for a weekend, told her she was special, and then blocked her number on the flight home. She found out from his driver.Another girl wrote a long post about him. She said he never remembered her name, and he called her "sweetheart" the whole time because it was ea
