The healer told them her name was Gale. She was so pretty that Veronica thought she sparkled with her silky blonde hair and annoyingly light blue eyes. Her spunky attitude flustered Veronica.
Gale did nothing to mask her ogling of the prince. To his credit, Prince Vaugn did not seem to notice the girl’s obvious attention.
She had followed them from the village to the outskirts of town. But they didn’t stop. Her voice was hesitant as she asked, “where are we going?”
Veronica rolled her eyes. “I told you my father needs your help and that we were attacked by a creature. He is really injured. Possibly poisoned.”

I watched the noisy girls as they fought over who knows what. Prince Vaugn seemed perplexed. But aside from Veronica’s rising temper, there didn’t seem to be any danger.We had made it to the cabin and everyone had a place around the room. The front door was left open to include Sladesaple. When we were waiting for Veronica to fetch the healer, he told me that his name was Disacland Sladesaple but it was obvious I could not say all that.Sladesaple suggested I only say part of it. I was little again, maybe five. Up until I saw the look in the monster king’s haunted eyes at Saple’s cell, all I could remember from back then was how scared I had always been. But now, I watched the child who was me. I ran around in circles beneath a blazing sun in a giant green field filled with little white flowers. I was laughing and playing happily. Looking up from the field, my younger self started jumping around as if I saw the best thing in the world. In the sky, a dragon descended. Then, there was nothing. I floated in a black sea that rocked me soothingly, as I let it carry me away. But suddenly it was bright.Groaning, I opened my eyes to see that I was standing downstairs in the castle I called home. I walked through that familiar dark door. Recognizing my younger self immediately, I felt a wave of sadness mix with a disorienting sense of future gloom.My father stood in the middle of the room. When I woke up, I was confused for a few minutes about where I was and what was happening. Everything looked weird. All the colors around me were so much brighter and the darkness had much more depth.I didn’t understand. But there was an important mission that we came here for that needed my attention right now. I looked over where the snake had come out.The blue flower was laying on it’s side on the ground but I cannot remember how it got separated from its stem. I picked it up gently. We flew to the castle. But the closer we got, the darker it was. Trees were quickly losing leaves but it was the wrong season for that. The air was cold.“The keeper is drawing life out of everything within its reach. It has an unending hunger.
